Check this stuff out:

http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2005/10/05/nintendo-wifi-usb-connector

I created a thread on this news topic because Nintendo is doing exactly what I predicted. Or at least close to it.

Now the big question that I have is how Nintendo will keep kids from meeting dirty old men who want to take their boyhood when they're playing Pokemon Online. I'm kinda worried that they're just going to disable or limit the ability to talk to other people, but I've heard they might just eliminate matchmaking and instead only allow you to play with people on some sort of "friends list."

I know there's not a lot of online gamers here but Is anyone excited for this?

Are you kidding? It's pretty much the reason I have a DS. Nintendo's promised national access points this whole time, and I've been waiting patiently for the day that I could take on my internet friends. I'm usually not interested in online gaming at all, since it's so restrictive and I'm usually not in the mood to be social if I'm sitting at home to begin with. This should change all that.

I actually am. If I can play Secret of Mana DS coop with my brother from across the country, well.

That's pretty fucking special.

< Huge online player, on all platforms. Obligatory, granted, but I do love it.

Despite rampant idiocy.

Nintendo's DS plans are looking great. That entire infrastructure will be in place before the Revo arrives, and it'll piggyback the online system right away. They have a good battleplan.

Harobots Action!!
Table Game Spirits
Zettai Zetsumei Dangerous Ojiisan
Nobunaga no Yabou DS
Daikoukai Jidai DS (Uncharted Waters)
Rainbow Island DS (Bubble Bobble)
Puzzle Series Vol. 1 Crossword
Puzzle Series Vol. 2 Jigsaw Puzzle
Puzzle Series Vol. 3 Sudoku

One oddity though. If 1up is to be believed, Square-Enix is making Mario Baseball. Huh?

Also - Castlevania and Tauma Center come out in the US today. Why do people say that Nintendo is going down?

They clearly aren't paying attention to the 7 million DS systems sold.

Rainbow Island is not Bubble Bobble. This will be awsome though! I mean, I am assuming that you can draw the rainbows, and perhaps even an auto walking or some sort. Like, Rainbow Islands that plays similar to Touch! Kirby. Nice.

Also, how are you sure this is another Castlevania? This list seems to have quite a few re-announced games.

Ghibli, excellent. Seryogin will crap.

In the West, the release of Animal Crossing: Wild World has been delayed, making Mario Kart DS the first available Wi-Fi compatible game when it is released in North America on November 14th and in Europe on November 25th. Details list four Wi-Fi multiplayer options for the game, allowing users to play with previously registered “friends”, with random national players, with random international players and with “rivals”.

New games revealed at the Japanese conference include a new Wario Land title and a basketball simulator from Square Enix named Mario Basket 3 vs 3.

Other third-party announcements included the first public showing of role-playing game ASH (Archaic Sealed Heat) from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker studio, and the announcement from Square Enix that the Nintendo DS version of NES title Final Fantasy III would feature fully revamped 3D graphics (the company also announced more straightforward conversions of SNES titles Final Fantasy V and VI for the Game Boy Advance).

can we have a serious conversation on the manly sport of videogaming without it inevitably becoming about someone's mother?

i should hope not.

you can only push a gamer so far. usually about 10 feet or so, unless there's some stairs in the way, but i'm not really sure how to count vertical drops.

A DS installment of the Mana/Seiken Densetsu series was announced as part of Square Enix's upcoming World Of Mana project. The game is titled Children Of Mana and continues in the glorious 2D tradition of the series. Brownie Brown may or may not be involved, and screenshots exist... um, somewhere. I hate to advocate IGN, but I think you can find some there. Wireless communication has yet to be announced or confirmed.

Also, the continuation of the series, Seiken Densetsu 4, will appear in 3D on a current-gen console, as rumors have it. PS2 is the crowd favorite, but there's (to my knowledge) been no definite word yet either way.

Well, there's homebrew wifi now, so I can't imagine it being that long before emulators with netplay exist.

Of course, DS homebrew can be a bit of an investment, but so far it's been worth every penny. Really, you needed a GBA flashcart anyway.

So... wait. Does this allow ad-hoc tunneling with a real DS? Because... that will be amazing.

There's a bit of a boostrapping process, but basically it works as follows:
  • Buy one of these, matched to a DS game that you own. You can get an original-blend PassMe for $5 less, but it's basically impossible to tell if your DS has firmware that blocks it or not without testing it, so why take the chance?
  • PassMe2 requires you to load up some code into the flashcart's SRAM in order to boot homebrew code. This is obnoxious and you should only bother doing it once to reflash the firmware.
  • Reflash the firmware with FlashMe. This not only allows for booting homebrew straight from the GBA flashcart (or Wifi, if you've got a suitable adapter (USB ones don't work) and install the appropriate drivers), it also puts some recovery code into a normally protected area of flash so that you can't brick your DS.
  • DS homebrew generally comes in two formats -- .nds.gba, which is suitable for throwing right onto your flashcart, and .nds, which is suitable for wifi booting and can be easily booted on a flashcart with a loader of some kind. This can be as simple as "copy /b ndsloader.bin+game.nds game.nds.gba", or as fancy-pants as something like these. I think maybe Moonshell works too? People seem to like it, anyway, because they can play MP3s and read ebooks while looking at hentai or whatever.
  • ...
  • DSLinux?

If any of you bother to do this, I'll totally send you my work-in-progress port of Kenta Cho's Noiz. It's awesome! Trust me.

You mean, two DSes linking up in homebrew code?

I don't think that's implemented yet. But, the wifi library isn't quite released to the general public, so it's still hard to say. And I think the code is there to do raw 802.11, which is really all you need. (Not that there are a lot of homebrewers who will bother to learn.)

i.e. playing 2 player WiFi on non-wifi enabled games
