That looks a lot more like Gridrunner++ than Space Giraffe really. Hopefully it'll sell a bit better too. :/

Oh

Burn

I was waiting for someone to say that. But, it does look as if it all fell from the same tree, aesthetically. It all looks like old arcade games with either the aliens changed into farm animals or with winamp visualization-style blitter effects bolted on.

Hey Dracko, there's only so many ways I can take 'fuck off right out of it', and none of them are 'as a joke', especially when it's coming from your bitter, twisted, snarky ass.

My god, can't you people have different opinions about things without insulting each other?

One of you thinks these games look the same in some way, one of you doesn't. There's no 'right' or 'wrong' there.

There. Fixed. Now get back to discussing things like grown ups.

I can see both sides of it, in that they look like they all play pretty differently and some are pretty obviously in completely different genres, yet they've all got the sort of mid-90s cyber-raver aesthetic to them, similar colors, similar designs, etc. I imagine the aesthetics are so noticeable to Harvey because he's a visual artist.

I'm pretty stoked for Gridrunner++, even if I stink at Space Giraffe.

Ah, I know what his games remind me of now, the demo scene.

There's a scene in a film called 'Lancelot Du Lac' which is the perfect metaphor for this. I couldn't find it online, but I found this description: "there is an extended scene in Robert Bresson's film Lancelot du Lac in which two knights completely encased in armor fight to the death. It's a metaphor for man's frustration with "the impossibility of actually connecting with another human being".

That's the internet!

we've all got our hair-triggers for various reasons; dessgeega is a fan of minter's work and james harvey is living in goddamn korea, for example.

also i think harvey and dracko are after each other because they're both british and that's like showing up at a party wearing the same handbag as someone else, y'know, got to draw your purse pistol and have it out from there

oddly dess and i both being robots in disguise hasn't really given rise to any bizzare hostilI'M GONNA CUT YOU DESS

i interpret dracko and harvey's tiffs as a kind of flirtation.

visually, there are common trends in minter's work, yes. one of the reasons i admire him so much as a developer is the way all his work, no matter how disparate, exudes his character. it's mostly the farm animals, which are his signature, and his voice, which always manages to come unmistakably through in the text of his games.

gridrunner++ is probably my favorite of his recent works, and i think one of the most important examples of how to use mouse input in a game. the other really admirable thing about it is that every visual element on the screen, no matter how it much it might look like simple noise, conveys some piece of information about the state of the game.

anyway, i'm really curious where he's going to take the game next. the gridrunner series has followed his entire career, beginning as a simple centipede clone and transforming into something entirely itself. voidrunner marks a pretty great midpoint, and is an excellent example of the "every level has slightly different rules" design he's fond of.

(also fyi the little goat guy is known as the "ancipital" and is probably the most distinct character minter's created in his career.)

sediment are we fighting? can it be with knives?

YEAH, ALRIGHT

If I was listening to a leaked new Radiohead song I'd been looking forward to hearing and someone just said 'It sounds just like all their other songs!' I would probably be pretty irked, so yeah, I'm sorry, I realise the error of my ways OK

it's ok harveyjames although really i think you generally post to irk me specifically

anyway i'm also really curious as to what direction minter will take this new version of gridrunner. to be honest, i love ++ but only for minutes at a time... and i'd hope for more than that from this version.

Whining, contrarily to popular belief, does not fuel your art, James.

I'm still amused you think I have a hate-on for you.

KinokoFry obviously hasn't met grown-ups.

Yes, I have.

I just don't like people being arses to each other when they could argue/discuss things minus the arsery.

You're probably both decent guys, and you probably both have decent points. I -know- James is and I will always give people I don't know the benefit of the doubt, at least to a point.

Anyway, back to the game!

I just don't know if I could play more Minter games. I've not really enjoyed what little I've played of them. Also I'm despondent because my favorite knife got stolen and I really can't spare the couple hundred dollars it would take to replace it.

It's surprising, how many people that read select button who feel that it consists of themselves plus a single, mostly-homogenous mob.

I mean, if anything, this is the predominant schtick on the forum right now.

Pretty much. It was bad enough when there was just "a shitload of posters" this time last year, but like you say it's now "a shitload of posters and their countless doppelgangers and joke accounts", which is just too much.

It's like, remember this? I complained when SB was first coalescing out of the ashes that we needed a way to distinguish between the people who are interested in a thriving community and the people who are just there to post more performative noise, and we STILL don't have it. In most threads I only bother paying attention to, like, the people who actually met up at KE3 '07, the people who post here, and Adilegian, internisus, DAIS, and a couple others. And most of those latter people ALSO post here, so I'm not sure why I bothered to mention them separately. Everybody else just blends together; the scale of the proceedings quickly overpower any connections you might incidentally make.

auntie pixelante just announced a new game. apparently she was worried about some messhof guy stealing her thunder.

insiders say the game has just entered a round of closed playtesting and should be released within the month.

I did that with the poster for Rambo III when I was a kid in the video store, and I thought it meant you couldn't rent any Rambo videos because Rambo was ill.

Hey, how fantastic is that! I'm actually happy for you, Patrick, because I know that this is, in a tiny little way, your "Giftpia" (in that I understand via my obsession with Giftpia the frustration you felt about this game being in Japanese).

I wonder what my Giftpia is. It's probably the Parappa the Rapper series. And Tetra's Trackers. Jet Set Radio. Powerstone. I want to absorb these games into my soul! I want to kill them and take their powers, like people did in the stone age.

(I just finished pencilling on Willy Wonka, I am reading TGQ on a break)

I actually have lots of "Giftpias", and I think Jet Set Radio is among them. Gyakuten Saiban is another one because I know that Pheonix Wright can't possibly do the originals justice. Terranigma, also. Breath of Fire 2. Oh, so many.

Giftpias are games stranded in untranslated or not translated right limbo?

My favorite is really mundane and makes Daphne yell at me... Puzzle Collection for GC. The only 4 player Dr Mario newer than an N64, and they keep breaking the OS to stop me using the Freeloader disc on Wii's GC mode.
