Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know I'm doing a series of "behind the scenes" posts on my blog about the art created for Braid. Maybe one per week, or something? I don't really have any readers yet, is the thing! So if you like being the first to try something, like when you're at Hershey Park and they take you into the lab to taste six variations on the Kit Kat (which happened to me!), then I welcome you to my humble blog. _________________

YOUR SHIT IS AMAZING.
i wasn't so sure about it when all id seen were screen shots, but then when i saw it moving at the experimental gameplay session last year i was blown away.
i talked about this with jon: i cant understand for the life of me why you guys havent been more aggressive about videos and trailers or anything that moves.
i hear jon was at 1up's last week, so i expect a feature on the show or something, which will be amazing im sure.
i think a lot of people are aware of the game (having been in development for so long), but i also think a vast majority of these people have NO IDEA what its about. time travel or something? its not an easy game to explain in words, and the art isnt fully appreciated until you see it in action.
so yeah, video coverage is something im happy to hear is coming. _________________ you cant spell selfish without fish |

Thank you, fish!
Yeah, actually Jonathan and I both went to see 1Up yesterday. They were super nice guys and very passionate about indie games and certainly Braid. So it was a lot of fun! There's a preview and interview that should be showing up in the 1UP Show after the next one. _________________

All I remember of Hershey Park is my parents buying me a bear that smelled like chocolate, then being worried that the bear would melt when we went on a monorail ride through a an orangey hot area where they mix the chocolate. _________________

Hmm, definitely in that 1UP thing, when it's up in a week or two (?) ...
EDIT! Some videos just hit the web, courtesy of Game Videos!
I'm adding them to my blog right now ... _________________

I think you should sell it on a stack of 5-1/4" floppies. Sort of the way that "serious" studio acts put out LPs in addition to their CD and iTunes releases. _________________

My pleasure!
So I'm using blogspot, and I don't see how to limit the length of the posts on the main page, you know, to have a page break so you have to click to get the entirety of a longer post. Can the break be placed anywhere you want, or do you just turn on a filter that automatically cuts off at a certain point? Anyway I don't see how to do it ... Anybody know? _________________

Not actually being helpful, I'm guessing there may a special bit of markup for that. With Livejournal you use <lj-cut text="BLAH BLAH"> to define a cutoff point. _________________

Hm, interesting. Weird how it's hard to find out.
You know what else bugs me about blogspot -- when you comment, you get sent to this generic looking back page, which is like suddenly being back stage, or kicked out to a back alley or something. Really breaks the awesome unique mood of my carefully chosen blogspot template!
EDIT: Oh my god, some poking around appears to have revealed that the only way to do "expandable post summaries" is a hack, and it only works for the main page (i.e. not for older posts), and it opens a separate window ... what a crock. Is blogspot for babies? Should I be on wordpress? This is really annoying. _________________

HAH! Yeah
Jill off would have fit onto a floppy if not for the art and music, which were like 4 times the definition that games of that time historically had. It is interesting that there isn't the same format fetishism for PCs that there is for music (and consoles, to a degree). |

That is interesting, if not hugely mysterious.
In terms of the media itself, I guess it's a side effect of always have been digital. There's one gold standard for fidelity, and in fact perfection has pretty much been a requirement from the get-go.
In terms of systems.... well, not so much in PCs, but with other systems for "classic" collectors you get people who will be content with emulators vs. people who must have it on original hardware. (heh, though again in terms of "format fetishism", I remember my old housemate who loved atari 8bit computers, but using trickery to get it wired up to a giant hard drive - again the storage medium seems to be a secondary concern) There's something to be said for both views.
I guess PCs with their connecting generations of backwards compatibility are less nostalgia-invoking, along with being Corporate Tools for so much of their lives. _________________ =/ \(<D)_/

They'd short out the keyboard and possibly, since I know you can do it in wordpress -- it's what Action Button runs on and dhex's music reviews use it as well. |

Thanks for the plug, man. I like your octopus guy. I'm pretty sure Peter Molyneux has felt the touch of a lover's hand, though! I mean you can tell just by looking at him. _________________

This is a really excellent interview. David, I could listen to you talk for hours.
And, uh, an added bonus is footage of Braid that I had not seen before--including different aspects of it, notably poking around in a little house or something where the jigsaws appear to be housed and where, I infer, story is focused.
I grow far less skeptical of the purported brilliance of this title; particularly, now that I know a little about how the game develops themes, I no longer expect the time warping puzzles to stand for a masterwork statement all on their own. I suppose that I will now segue into a time of actively restraining my excitement in lieu of knowing when I can expect to play on my PC. |
