What's your favorite game of all time?

Yep. That's the really lame topic that I was about to make. I was going to bring it up because I really don't know. Then I started thinking about it and I decided that it would be more fun to make a thread where we guess what everyone else's favorite games are. Don't actually mention your favorite game in this thread until it starts to die down. I'll start!

Toups - Silent Hill 2
dhex - Ultima 4
ShaperMC - Salamander
dessgeega - Mr. Driller 2
persona - Mario 3
ApM - Space War
Szczepaniak - Metal Gear 1
Lestrade - Ico
disneyland - Half Life
icyclam - Asuka 120
aderack - King of Fighters '98
TOLLMASTER - Disgaea
DonMarco - SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters
player 2 - Double Dragon
Mr. Mechanical - Grand Theft Auto 3
seryogin - Chrono Trigger

Sorry if I left anyone out, I'll update as more posts are added!

-Wes

Clearly, the titles of a person's favorite games will have something in common with his or her handle. I've listed two games, to make things clearer:

disneyland = Malibu Beach Volleyball, Skies of Arcadia
dhex = 3-Demon, Virtua Fighter CG Portrait Series Vol. 7: Shun Di
dessgeega = Full Throttle, The Three Stooges
DonMarco = Panel de Pon, Policenauts
    Lestrade = Gumshoe, Suspect
    Mr. Mechanical = Everquest, Populous
    player 2 = Driver 2, Gradius 2
ShaperMC = Fade to Black, Tomb Raider
Szczepaniak = M&M's Mini Madness, Mr. Driller
Tablesaw = Alter Ego, Escape from Monkey Island
TOLLMASTER = The Glass Rose, Mahjong Fantastic Love

I absolutely think games are atrocious.

But I still have a flavourite. In fact, it's a tossup between two right now.

I can't even think of a game that isn't japanese that I would even consider as my favorite of all time.

Well. Now that I think of it.

Maybe.

...

Nope. I was wrong. Still japanese

I actually once made a top 100 personal favourite games list, and the Japanese to Non-Japanese ratio was like 11 to 1 toughly. There are only a handful of Western games I like, but they are all excellent.

I would actually recomend everyone writes their own top 100, it's very theraputic for yourself. (but avoid putting it on forums, lists, unless they are done like this one by Super, can get very dull)

I must admit, this is one of the most entertaining list threads Ive seen in a while.

I've got a Top 15 from maybe 5 years ago that I'll post here in a few days... Top 15s are much more managable.

Just to make this post worthwhile (?), I'll also include a link to IGN's top 100 *snicker*.

You've hot the nail on the head. Top 10, 15 or 20 lists are easy. But a personal top 100 forces you to think long and hard about which games you simply like, and which were profound for you. It doesn't have to be in order, my top 100 lost its order around 30, and then it became a general "in no particular order" top 100.

But, if makes you dredge up your long forgotten memories, and weigh up the pros and cons, fun factors, and so many other things, to see if a game makes the list. Once you've got about 70 games listed, it becomes bloody tough, as you seperate the wheat from the chaff so to speak.

I found it enlightening.

Go on, everyone write your own top 100 (but don't post it), the results may surprise you. Despite being a huge Famicom fan, very few Famicom games made it onto my list. This raises a question. What is my fondness for the system based on? There are many personal questions raised by such a thing.

Think of it as a therapy session with a good shrink, except one where she doesn't hypnotise you and then bonk your brains out.

EDIT:
That IGN thing doesn't seem to work. Clicking on their different numbers only brings up a 404.

I bet they won't be too close. My current top 15 probably contains half the games of mine from 5 years ago.

It's Zany Golf, you philistines, and you're still wrong!

ShaperMC: Band Brothers, emulated on his PSP.
SuperWes: Officially, something obscure, imported, and expensive, whose title is not expressible in Roman characters. Secretly, though, he curls up in bed every night with his copy of Myst.
Szczepaniak: A crappy Apple II BASIC game, made by the future designers of Star Control II when they were 12.
Player 2: Mario Battle no. 1.
Captain Toups, Game Master: Do You Like Horny Bunnies?
dessgeega: An unfinished, unannounced AGT game that she's been quietly building for the past 8 years and which she believes will be a masterpiece beyond anything that the world has ever seen.
icyclam: Legend Of The Red Dragon.
disneyland: Enters the Ludum Dare 48-hour Game Programming Competition every time it's held, secretly wishes he could be bluescrn.
dhex: Punch Jack Thompson and Win $5,000 banner ad.

GOTTA KEEP IT SEPERATED!!

That Top 100 games thing sounds interesting. It'll be like flushing your system out and then reorganizing from there.

I also like Dhex's guesses. I'm guessing his favorite game is non-Japanese? Something old and on a PC. Also, Szczepaniak, Dhex hates Nintendogs. Or was that a joke?

I think the trick behind this thread is that while you're guessing everyone's favorites, you are in fact revealing what your own favorites are. Well, in my case, it was just blatant guessing. (Although I thing I pegged icyclam correctly with the Tokimemo game...)

I've been planning on making a Top 100 the same month that EGM publishes their Top 100 (should be November I think) to see how similar they turn out. That and I love making lists.

I found it odd that both SW and Shaper put Ico for me, then I realized I had the game in my name. Well, despite what the name suggests, I'm not even sure if Ico would crack the top 15. Anymore. It was one of my very favorites back when I settled on this name a couple years ago.

Whoa, that LD48 stuff is cool. Can't believe I didn't know it existed.
I did something like that once for OCremix, but the timeframe was 24 hours. Created a little drum & bass track that mixed bits from PSO with stuff from Christmas Nights. Think I was disqualified because it was too short. Bastards.

I was just teasing dhex about nintendogs. I would have actually put down Morrowind for him, since he seemed to really enjoy it a while back on the old IC thread. But, well, you know, I felt like rockin the boat for my own amusement. it was all a blatant lie on my part. I guessed you like Magic pengel, because it enables artistic gaming.

As for dessgeega's guess, what can I say, it's like you're reading my inner thoughts (egads! Stay away from the green door in there!). And you're mostly correct. Mostly. It sort of holds joint first place with a Nintendo title. Depnding on my mood, either could be in first. Over the years, each of them change place inside my mind.

Alright, we're not folding yet. But here is my Top 15 from back in the day. It looks like it's from around 1999. Man is some of this stuff badly written. I think Monday should be the Top 15, 20, or 100 revelation day. Fun!

incidentally, tetris was the one videogame my last partner enjoyed.

so tetris won't be on my top 15.

But actually, Ninja Golf is pretty terrible!

I remember where you went back and played it again to find it terrible.

Hint: I have no idea what my favorite game is. A "top" list for me would be painfully difficult.

A lot of my list would be Saturn stuff.

I mean, come now: Nights, the Panzer Dragoons, the Treasure titles, the Capcom ports, the last, best, pure 2D Bomberman, Darius, Dragon Force...

Fucking hell, that system restored my (perfectly intact) faith in gaming for years.

Yes, pain is good. Good for the cleansing. Less with the avoiding, more with the pain. Don't try and get it in order, just write down the first 100 games you enjoy that pop into your head. Once you have a 100, stop, and look at the results. Order is not important. If pops in there, just put it down.

One of the biggest problems, in my opinion, with any top whatever list is that it skews a little too close to the recent. Look at any of the VH1 Top 100 type shows and you'll see what I mean. But then again lists that try to overcompensate for this end up sounding elitist and over-nostalgic.

I think if any group of people can try to fly right down the middle of the two extremes, it's TGQ, collectively. I'll be interested in seeing everyone's list.

So are you gonna be checking out Dragon Quest VIII? Cause it does seem like it could be your kind of game. Maybe. I've never played it, but from what I imagine it does I'd think so.
