I might be paranoid, but this is something I have been wrestling with for a while, and haven't reached any sort of conclusion on it yet. It's about the morality of gaming.
No, not like Knights of the Old Republic. Real, applicable morality.
i.e. How do I reconcile my taste for the artform with the notion that playing on a console or pc uses a lot of power relative to, say, reading a book or looking at a painting? And the newer systems are only using more and more power (see: the ridiculous power brick on the Xbox 360), not to mention the escalated power use as production values for games continue to rise. Is it acceptable for me to rationalize that my penchant for electronic games is off-set by the fact that I ride a bike, minimize ac and heat use, and keep vigilant about turning off superfluous lights?
Has anyone else attempted to deal with this on a personal level? Am I out of my mind to be worried about it?
Alternate discussion topic: Environmentally aware games. I submit Pikmin 2. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

You certainly aren't out of your mind--it's simply that most people don't consider it a factor, or if they do, it's along the lines of "am I going to have to get a new power supply"?
If you're truly bothered by your energy usage, you might want to look into ways to avoid using unnecessary power. |

I'm not promoting a fatalistic view, but games are probably not the most energy-wasteful luxury that you enjoy. One's diet is a commonly overlooked aspect of conservation, for example.
Using my computer to browse the internet or read e-books, for example, uses more power than my ps2, if we're stick to leisure. |
