Not significantly, but overall less awesome. More awesome than Super R-Type, but that's not hard to do. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Way to steal my thunder.
I just tried it, it works for me. PC Engine games! More N64 games! This is fucking awesome. I think, if my calculations are correct, I also save money by doing this.
EDIT: Sorry yankees, looks like you're out of luck. Japan uses NTSC-J, so yeah. On the plus side, I can finally play PC Engine games! I'm pretty pumped. I'm getting some people over to play bomberman. _________________

Wait, so does this help any one with Region 1 Wii's at all? Or just people in other parts of the world?

Some people said that you lose all your remaining wiipoints while changing territory, but that's a lie. I had no problems doing this, I'm back in Australia now for the local news. Apparently the only odd thing is that you only see the games downloaded from the shop you got it from - so you won't see the PC Engine games you got in the Australian shop, but I don't see how that will be a problem.
It works perfectly for me. _________________

That is so freaking bizarre. There's no real difference between NTSC/J and NTSC/UC regions at all--heck, for the SNES and N64, you could play Japanese games on a US machine and vice versa by just snapping off a pair of plastic tabs in the cartridge slots. I find it really strange that they'd let you switch between all these other regional areas, but not Japan. Of course, maybe they figured someone would discover this gimmick and that the Japanese VC store would be the most likely target. Still, that's a little annoying.
So, do the European/PAL regions have any interesting titles we're missing? |

Is anyone else searching for Wii Points cards? I have some trade-in credit at EB that would love to purchase a few, but none of the stores here or in Baton Rouge have had any for a while. I wouldn't mind having Mario Kart 64 (until the SNES version becomes available ... fingers crossed!) or Bonk's Adventure. I already purchased a classic controller, so now I just need to give it a purpose. The poor thing, it keeps trying to plug itself into the TurboGrafx 16. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. It's not that strange. You simply can't choose any countries outside of the western hemisphere when choosing a region with a US wii. |

My brother-in-law and I used to play Mario Kart 64 all the time, but when we downloaded it for the VC the other day we really weren't feeling it. It was like meeting up with an old friend and finding you have nothing in common any more. I've felt like this for most of the VC games I've downloaded. I feel somehow detached from these games, now. Has anyone else had a similar experience? |

No, probably because I never attached any serious feelings to most of the games on the service, and because I've been playing most of the games that I do seriously enjoy off-and-on with friends for the past 10 years. I mean, hell. The last time I played Mario Kart 64 was about 3 weeks ago. The room across from me in the dorms during my freshman year of college played angry drunk Mario Kart 64 every other night. It's a pretty good game! |

No, but they haven't released anything that I've played extensively in the past yet (except Zelda, which I didn't download cause I have copies elsewhere).
I worry about what happens when I run out of space on that 512 MB drive, every time I download a new game. They don't make this stuff work well with the flash drive at all, do they? |

If you run out of space, copy something you don't need onto an SD card or just delete it. You can redownload it later, anyway. |

Yeah, I thought copying VC titles to SD cards wasn't allowed. If it was, wouldn't it be easy to copy from reader to reader via a PC? Although I own a few of the games anyway, so I can't say I'm too excited at the thought of purchasing them again or in some cases again again. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

Holy Crap! Awesome week for VC.
Mario Kart 64, Contra III, Bonanza Bros. and Comix Zone available for download.
Contra III and Mario Kart are both very, very tempting...

Yes they are!
Funnily enough I'm just enjoying Contra on Xbox Live right now. It's a real shame that the VC doesnt' allow online leaderboards or multiplayer, really. A horrible shame.
I'm going to try and not buy Mario Kart, but I imagine my GF would very much enjoy some multiplayer action in it. It probably looks very crispy on the Wii, too. _________________ aerisdead |

What made you think this? Go onto your wii right now and copy a VC game to your SD card. You can't take it to someone else's house to play, but you can definitely keep it on the card for storage purposes. |

I was looking into buying a combo pack that included a 2 GB SD card and someone said it wasn't worth it since the VC titles couldn't be stored on it. I hadn't read otherwise - I don't have any VC titles yet - and since no one refuted the comment I figured it was true. I'm glad to hear that I was mistaken! _________________ Come to me, Mordel. Well, it still isn't worth it since you can't run VC games off of an SD card, so I see where they were coming from. It's also worth noting that brand new systems (at least the first batch) don't actually allow you to move games over to an SD card until you connect to the web and download the firmware updates. From what I hear at least.
In other news, the Wii store seems to move around 100x faster since the News Channel upgrade. I can now go to the store and download games without any problems at all where before it would time out every other time and take two minutes between each screen even when I did connect. Woo hoo!

I haven't tried this myself, but I'm pretty sure you can re-download games you've already bought. So if you're running low on space, erase some games you don't play much and just download them again in the future. Not very convenient, but... 512 MB, dudes. Shit.
Not sure if that depends on having a MyNintendo account.
I just bought Mario Kart 64 and I'm not sure why. I owned it a long time ago. I never really liked it. Cheap looking and cheap playing. Probably the best one can say about it is it's better in a party, but I haven't had a gaming party since college.
What about the Genesis games ... can anyone speak for those? _________________

The VC games I've purchased so far are: Gunstar Heroes, SimCity, Sonic, and SMB.
I can't bring myself to purchase any more right now, since OOT is coming. I wish they'd make it Wii-mote enabled, like the hack that's floating around on the web.

just by the by: i've purchased bomberman, street fighter, and gunstar.
i'm making a special point to only buy multiplayer stuff because ordinarily i use my DS (or my laptop, even; playing on a TV is oftentimes a detractor for me nowadays) for most of my emulation needs.
i wish they'd release mario party 2. it'll probably take years, is the funny thing. i'm waiting until 2008 to play mario party 2.
what i like about VC is how it encourages me to go find roms of whatever obscure genesis/TG16 games turn up from time to time, which... suggests they really ought to be offering some kind of rental service. not that i wanted to pay money for dungeon explorer after having played it, but! |

I've become a tool like I harassed Shaper and Toups about ;_;
I am totally buying Mario Kart 64 since I think it has the best multiplayer of the series. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

I agree, but it's also the one most difficult to play on the Wii. You need to have classic controllers or GameCube controllers for everyone since the standard remote won't work.

I don't have any of the Genesis VC games, but Comix Zone and of course Gunstar Heroes are a total blast on their original system, and if the emulation's decent I highly recommend picking them up. The fun of Gunstar Heroes is multiplied tenfold when playing with a friend! (Provided you use reason, and when reason fails, violence, to convince them that it is never okay to even accidentally throw you into a pit.) |

What's stopping me from getting a bunch of the Genesis titles is that the recently released Sega collection on the PS2 is by all accounts a fantastic collection: all Phantasy Star and Golden Axe titles, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, etc. Even though I own a TG16, I might pick up a title or two for it just so I don't have to take the system out anymore. Yeah, that's kind of lazy, but I need that shelf space! _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

gunstar heroes and comix zone are both a little boring when played alone.
comix zone has no multiplayer mode.
EDIT: speaking of which - how IS bonanza bros.? i've been discovering of late just how little affection i have for most of sega's so-called classics, and, well, in this case i'm somewhat convinced that my fiddling with kega fusion for ten minutes is going to give me a considerably worse impression than reading the testimony of somebody who's actually played it co-operatively would.

Mario Kart 64 is every bit as wonderful as I remember it. I am taking my Wii with me tomorrow to work and hope to get some hardcore battle mode action in with my coworkers.
The 3D models are a little scary looking (I never realized this before) but it doesn't really bother me that much, as it's still really fun to play!
I am glad the emulation of the N64 doesn't have minor issues like some of the other VC consoles do. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

The sprite flicker is... well, you know, intended. The rainbow... that may be your TV. Which games give you rainbows? _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Mostly the pipes in Super Mario Brothers.
And I don't think this much flicker was intended but I'm guessing it's just a problem with the original game and not the emulator. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |
