Well, in a FF8 way, anyway. Still Uematsu has some punch left in him after all. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

I don't think Snake fits in at all. Also, he looks like he plays like a clone of someone else... I'm not familiar enough with the game to say who though.
Anyways, Yoshi's Island stage! _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Why do you say he doesn't fit in? Is it because he's from another company?
In SMB: Melee when you put any of the Fire Emblem characters next to Yoshi or Ness's giant heads things look pretty silly there, too. |

I don't know. If you consider Snake's origins as an 8bit era character and particulalry how the original Metal Gear Solid embraced that, I don't think Snake is quite as out of place as he intially seems, at least thematically. |

I think Snake fits in just fine, personally.
What was the level where there were the Atlas-like statues? It had a different texture color than the Pit/Kid Icarus level and I didn't recognize it.
Also, the music at the beginning reminded me more of Metal Gear than Smash Bros or final Fantasy.
Uematsu should write more pieces that have choir accompaniments. |

Snake's cool, the one character I'm mixed about is Naked Samus. I imagine she's gonna play similar to Sheik\Zelda. Where she can transform and has a different move set.
That stage with the statues has to be a Kid Icarus level. It looks like something out of an underground labyrinth stage. Only that several liberties were taken since Pitt hasn't seen daylight since what....1987? (The one on GB is more a remake than a sequel, to me). |

Everyone looks out of place in the SSB games. It's part of the charm. I want Pee-Wee Herman and Colin Mochrie in the next version. |

the music is nice but it seems a little too dramatic to me. too "life or death"-ish.
i'm curious to see what other characters they have in store, but i'm actually hoping they'll reveal the control scheme next. but maybe they don't want to commit to anything yet. |

Huh, yeah, Snake's melee moves DO seem terribly familiar!
Oh, and we're supposed to use GC controllers with this game, right?
I'm excited about seeing Pit and Meta Knight. Their models seemed the most interesting, and some of their moves look pretty cool. That's pretty basic, I guess, but it's pretty hard to say things about this game until it's been played. _________________ SIGHUP |

essentially i think it would be nice if, rather than just a gimmick, the use of the Wiimote (instead of a GC controller) actually offered some kind of benefit. since it's a first party title, i have some faith that this might be the case. |

I have a large erection for the appearance of Wario in this game. Too long has one of Nintendo's staple characters been passed over for such stupid frippery as Pichu and Ice Climbers (who, thank God, are not returning).
Also, yes, Sakurai has stated that the controls will be designed for the Cube controller because he can't see a significant use for the Wiimote in the game.
Also, yes, turning off all items and fighting on Final Destination is lame. Items are awesome fun and their correct management should be a proper part of any real Smash Bros. game.
Also, what's the deal with the white-sparks-and-flashes-every-time-anybody-hits-anyone in that trailer they released a little while ago.
Also, you can download the theme here.
I quite like this music. It'll be interesting to see how operatic they can make the whole thing. _________________

i heard though, that the team they hired to work on the new game may have done exactly that. _________________

I guess those fun-hating, "competetive" players can't help but ruin it for the rest of us!
Guys, Nintendo probably took notice of the steadily-growing group of tourney players and decided to gear some of the game's features toward them. Which is a good thing, considering it's a niche of a niche crowd. Given the game's history I doubt they'd shift focus from the party demographic, since they're still 95% of the game's audience. Dumber things have happened, though.

They don't have to do a damn thing, which is why I'm saying it's nice that it looks like they might be. The "serious" players made Melee into something someone might want to play for more than a few months with some friends, and while how they choose to play the game seems lame, or bitchy, or whatever, it still has its merits if I understand correctly. |

You take that back! The Ice Climbers are an interesting duo in which you can coordinate mighty attacks and daring combination mallet smashes to the headache of your opponent. No other character plays like they do. They are one of my trio of main characters.
Plus, I love their jump sounds and voices. |

This won't be too bad as long as they don't base the game around bullshit like dash cancelling.
Anyway the chaotic aspect of smash bros. is the best part, as well as how accessible it is to new people. As long as those two pieces are in place I'm fine with whatever changes they make. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

Olimar seems like an obvious choice. They'll probably add/replace the Fire Emblem cast with characters from the new Wii game, too. They used Roy as cross-promotion for the GBA game, didn't they? |

captain olimar: down+B attack pulls a pikmin from the ground, princess peach style, and adds it to the group following olimar around. smash+B flings a pikmin - if it hits an opponent, it attaches, slowing the opponent slighly and doing 1HP damage every couple seconds. these are cumulative. after several seconds, a pikmin is shaken off, and is lost forever, as is a pikmin who is flung and finds no target.
pulling a pikmin from the ground produces a random pikmin - occasionally the player may dig up a purple or poison pikmin, or a yellow pikmin with a bomb. _________________

No, Roy and Marth were stars of different Fire Emblems. Marth was in the first one and Roy was in the sixth one
The one we got in the US (which is the seventh) was a prequel to the one that stars Roy. You played that part of his father Eliwood in that one. |

That would be interesting. It'd certainly mix up the game a little if Olimar had to avoid other players before taking a beating as well as after. |

Right, but Roy appeared in Melee before the Japanese GBA game starring him came out, yeah? I recall that being how it worked, I could be wrong. |

No, you're right on that one. The Fire Emblem that starred Roy was the first of the series on a handheld and that was out in 2002. Smash Bros was out at the tail end of 2001 so I could see how some cross-promotion happened there.
They were all console games before that point.
So that makes three GBA Fire Emblems.that were released yet, we only got two in English. I don't know what it is about games with long stories that makes Nintendo hesitant to release them outside of Japan. Mother series springs to mind here. |

Really?
I take it there is a translation patch after some fans got sick of waiting for Nintendo to get off their duffs and release the thing?
I should invest in some Flash media some day to play this proper if so. |

The Ice Climbers are fun to play as. Sometimes, for instance, you have to make a decision to throw yourself off the stage on purpose if you've lost your partner. Usually, it's best to avoid the suicide, but sometimes you really need to get some kills quickly--if you're already losing and time is almost up, for instance.
I'm not really sure how I feel about Samus sans-armor. I think the appeal of her character is that she was very personal, because she was always under her armor. She looked like you wanted her to look, and thought like you did. It's kind of like seeing a grue--not matter how awesome, the demystification is rather bothersome. Besides, I liked her as a brunette.
The addition of Metaknight and Pit is more than enough to make me happy, however. Thank you God! Now, just add in a "real" Adventure mode and I'm sold on the Wii. |

Depends on how far you are in the game, I'd think.
She would obviously spend the time while the credits roll to take off her power ups. Don't really need the Wave Beam or ability to fly in the comfort of your own home. |

Other peopel have argued about the unfortunate kind of "sexing up" of Samus. It was kind of cool when you had the one central game character who was in spacearmor, and was female, but that really didn't enter into it much... |

yea, i'd agree that it's unfortunate. she was one of the few game characters whose sex played little to no role. it's probably true that there was some initial intrigue due to the fact that it wasn't something immediately recognizable or knowable, but for quite a while there was nothing more to it.
i think the "true ending" in every Metroid added little by little to the objectification of her character, but it didn't become too blatant (i think) until Fusion. and then some of the stills in Zero Mission (particularly of Samus without the suit) really pushed it completely into that realm. |

the fun thing is that (if i'm remembering correctly) the american zero mission and the japanese have different ending scenes: american players get cheesecake images of samus while japanese players get images of samus's childhood on planet zebes, among the chozo.
this says something profound, i'm pretty sure. _________________

Alas this title is new to me...
but on its Wikipedia page:
Quote: | In the Mr. Driller series of games, Kissy is a supporting character under the name, Toby Masuyo (they refer to "Kissy" as being her nickname). She married and divorced Taizo Hori (better known as Dig Dug). They had three children two of which are Susumu Hori (the main character of Mr. Driller) and Ataru Hori. |
I kind of missed Mr. Driller as well... and I knew there was a Dig-Dug feel, but had no idea about this level of backstory.
|

this says something profound, i'm pretty sure. |
Actually, the japanese version had the same cheesecake endings as the US version, but were only obtainable by playing hard mode. The other endings you mentioned were seen if finished on normal difficulty. I assume they got added during the extra few months the JP version had in development. If you were trying to suggest that the Japanese market panders less shamelessly than the US one, I'm not sure where you're coming from! |
