q: What percentage of all games made would you say are violent, based upon your previous definition of violence in video games?
a: This gets to a fundamental lie being propagated by the video game industry, including Doug Lowenstein, the Joseph Goebbels of the industry.
now, if mr. lowenstein is on the ball, maybe mr. thompson will get himself a suit of his own.
i mean, we all know mr. thompson is the morgan spurlock of the video game industry. no reason to beat that horse again. but sometimes i have to wonder what will happen when he eventually wins a suit, due to cultural conditions. |

Preliminary comment: The guy that wrote that article looks like a fucking prick with that smile.
Aside: I started reading Power+Up recently and there is some BS about Liberman that this article reminds me of. There was some BS about how a guy got one kid to say that Ninjas are dangerous because of TMNT. When asked where ninjas come from the child answered [not direct quote]"either China or Japan, and they are dangerous. This is the only "fact" that an entire book has to support the "fact" that games make kids racist.
Direct: This is an excellent quote:
"Is gaming escapism?
Yes, just as Ted Bundy escaped into pornography. It is not a release of aggression. It is training for aggression."
I am sure more pornography is sold daily, in both quantity and profit, than games. There is 1 Ted Bundy from porno, we have 0 Ted Bundys from games.
Aside from some absurd comments ("Columbine-times-10 incident"), I found myself agreeing with some of the points. I think that we currently have a generation of kids whos parents did not grow up with video games, or did and don't think Pac-Man is violent. The next generation of parents will be kids that played or heard of these games who now have kids.
We are teaching our selves to learn what to do with our kids.
PS: I am moving this over to the public forum |

Quote: | Does age or sex play a factor in violent, aggressive behavior?
Sure, the sex and violence centers of the brain overlay one another, which is why the increasing mix of sex and violence is troubling. Armies have been known to go on rape rampages after battles because the violence stimulates sexual aggression. How lovely that GTA weds sex and violence in the same game. We are training a generation of teens to combine sex with violence, just what America needs. |
i dont even think he knew the question there. |

Yes he did. He doesn't care because he will be quoted out of context. To him the only relevance the question holds is in how he has to spin his response to best present his agenda.
Interviews are stupid. _________________ violaters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the jam. |

"Reason prevailed at a meeting of the Maryland legislature on video game violence despite Jack Thompson and his Pied Piper like ability to lead people from the path of logic. Maryland lawmakers say they are hesitant to restrict video game sales because they don’t want to trample on freedom of speech. This despite watching a two-minute worst of video from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City which features decapitation, dismemberment and multiple shootings and then having to listen to Jack-ass Thompson spin his sordid tale of video games and violence."

is it possible, mr. shaper, do you think, to write an article about the biologic entity known as jack thompson that goes beyond "ZOMG FREE SPEECH D00D"?
my first instinct is to toss together some sort of "chickens coming home to roost" routine about liberals and first they came for the tobacco companies type stuff but noone wants to read that shit, and it's sort of unnecessarily partisan. |

If you think you can do some really good research, go for it. Instead of the article you wanted to write about journalism... you could, you know actually just put out truely journalistic article.
That would be quite excellent. |

Wow... but I don't get the gaming connection. This guy just seems like the ultra-straight arrow kind of guy. Anyways, I am not too into politics... but I only understood a little of why that was so significant. |

read the entire document, specifically where he tells the director the fucking FBI that janet reno was hiring hookers.
he has a long history of being a crazy bastard. i knew he lost a state race against reno back in the late 80s, but i didn't know he had flipped his wig that badly. |

i mean, speaking as someone who thinks janet reno should have been charged with gross misconduct or at least fired for the waco massacre, that shit is just way too far out there. |

I don't remember what conversation this was prevelent to, but... well. . . I still kinda agree that M games should be carded for. At least to like under 13 year olds or some shit. I mean, I would buy games for my kid that was rated M (hahahahahaha me ... kids...) but I would want to know what was going on with it and I would want to explain the differences between reality and game if they were too young.

Honestly I just wish that more stores would card as store policy. I don't think that laws need to come in. |

You know, I agree with the carding thing too, but I don't agree with singling video games out. If they're going to have to card for M rated games they should also have to card for R rated DVDs. Carding only for video games makes games look like porn or cigarettes, but carding for an already respected medium like movies would show that video games shouldn't immediately be classified as tools of the devil. Even though they are. And good ones.

I pretty much only go to movie theatres that card for R-Rated movies. I hate little teens that go to see the new action horror movie on weekends and just talk through the whole thing. I almost got into a fight at a theatre once because of it....
So, yea. Carding is cool, I mean, when I got carded to buy MGS2 I was like "WTF?!" But it was cool when I thought about it. I think this was at a Wal-Mart.
Perhaps a law that makes stores card? That sounds like gray area though... what the hell. |
