The premise here is simple. When have you felt most intrinsically, physically attached to a game experience? Focus on riveting, immediate sensations.

This question was prompted by my recent high-score of 311050 in Pac-Man C.E. As time wound down, I was acutely aware of each deafening heartbeat at every point in my body. I erupted into a war whoop before crashing back to my seat, quaking and breathing my way back to normalcy.

I'm not sure I've ever really felt that way about anything.

I understand it in theory. Doesn't come naturally, though.

I keep trying to fake it lately, to put people on edge less.

He still hasn't brought it over from his old site, but Zaratustra made a game where you're flying through an endless passage trying to dodge columns and beams that popped up randomly. I played this for about an hour and a half one night at 4 AM, and my extreme physical exhaustion combined with the hypnotic, understated game experience to produce one of the most visceral game experiences I've ever had.

I played Super Hang On once at a convention, where someone had the idea to put speakers into a helmet. and it was on the coin op version where you had to lead into the turns. So awesome.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies is the one that immediately comes to mind.

Though there's likely tons more, I'm not sure where the anti-transcendent theme comes in. How do you mean it?

Moon Giraffe, all three seconds of it.

And anytime I go off a long drop in a DooM map I get a severe case of butterflies, like being on a rollercoaster or in a car going over a several dips in the road in a row.

Yes yes yes thank you.

I want to say the first time I finished Bark at the Moon and/or Cowboys From Hell on expert in Guitar Hero, but peripheral-based games seem like cheating, somehow.

Good question. It was a hastily considered word at the time, but I think i said what I meant, which is this: the: experience of playing the game becomes intensely local within the player, as opposed to a series of (perhaps greatly overarching) connections with the rest of the world.

Another way: the world becomes reduced to the feeling of playing a game, opposed to the player situating a game and an experience within the world.

So, basically, games you lost yourself in. The most intensely escapist experiences available.

Rez definitely falls under this then, especially it's unlockable Trance Mission, which I could trip out on when suitably tired and into it. Pure zen gaming by that point. I'm told killer7 as Kevin Smith works marvels for this too, so I'll have to try that.

While we're at it, I'll also add Star Fox in there.

The other day I was playing Lifeline on Wii Warioware with a bunch of Chinese kids. That was the most fun ever! We even started running in time with the running guys on the screen. Pretty much all the multiplayer modes in that game fall under the heading of this thread, except darts. The end boss dancing game was pretty awesome to take it in turns to play, too.

Besides that, off the top of my head- fighting the giant eagle in Shadow of The Collossus. The demo of Beautiful Katamari, since that's the only Katamari I've played.

The first time I discovered the tribespeople had built a giant effigy of me being murdered by a spike in Doshin the Giant I was moved for reasons I still can't quite explain.

The final form of the last boss of Ikaruga gives me an adrenaline rush every time. It's compltely ruined if I die, though.
