I think if you link to an off-site avatar it can be a bigger size. I like having everyone at 80x80 though...

Fixed my avitar in the name of peace. HOWEVER I noticed that the boards dont resize at all to scrunch down to the small icon size. Oh well, no reason to revert.
Sorry to derail.

A space before the slammer is a common device of internet female exuberance.
Witness:

Oh, that wasn't me.

vs.

Oh, that wasn't me!

vs.

Oh, that wasn't me !

---------------------------------

For some reason the space before the exclamation works a little playfulness into the text, which in turn adds a female “cute factor” to the expression. You’re also more likely to see a guy react to something oddly amusing with a “Heh” -- which conveys a slightly off-putting, mildly disinterested, not-easily-impressed humor (read: manly man), where a woman might habitually type “Hehe” instead. I speak and read French, and I see the same kind of patterns in that language online as well.

I suppose it’s all role-playing to a certain degree: comfortable stereotypes to ease acceptance in a social medium frequently characterized by emotional succinctness and behavior-curbing anonymity.

no, more like a rusty old piece of metal that gets used for dirty work then ditched when the holes start to show and it demands repair time and attention.

I think it might have something to do with there being three different versions of the game coming out, all at full price, with only three different dogs on each version. At least if you're participating in a gangbang you aren't getting unwillingly fucked out of something. Unless you want to be, of course.

he who has eyes, see. he who has ears, hear.

long story short: children are getting more intelligent in one sense, in terms of dealing with complexity. on the other hand, depth has been lost. and along with depth quite a bit of emotional intelligence, in terms of things like common courtesy, and more strictly, the ability to deal with the idea of "community" as anything real beyond either the words on a civic center or empty words at a protest rally.

now, nintendogs didn't cause this. it's not even a symptom of anything greater, nor was the past all that much of a barrel of laughs. but i cannot deny that i have seen a degradation of manners, especially since the cell phone became ubiquitous. headphones were never that intrusive after a while; people interrupt me when i'm listening to something in public all the time. but nintendogs is like the creme of the cream of teh good stuff in terms of this decline in the strength of the human spirit, a fundamental facet of who we are.

it is a simulation of a genuine social phenomenon which only occurs in public parks at this point, but more importantly, it occurs in the first place in the flesh and blood world. it is a simulation of a bond between a person and an animal - something i can only feel with small kinds and rodents, it seems, but my veterinarian sister feels it for all dogs great and small. she's all for nintendogs as a way of preventing animal abuse and maladjustment, seeing as she does poor behavior by owners who probably had no business taking responsibility for a relatively helpless and sentient life in the first place.

now, this does have a social aspect. nothing wrong with artifical space, mind you, but you have to be a depraved, sick, bastards of a motherfucker to simulate taking a dog to a dog run and meeting with other dog owners. for fuck's sake, really.

i'm reminded of a recent vice magazine don't where one dude had his hand in another dude's jockeys and the caption reads something like "we don't want you to go back to pretending to be married to lesbians, etc" but it's a bit more insulting than that.ok, let's try this:

Quote:

Okay, lads, whoa. This is getting a little out of control. We don't want you to have to sneak into after-hours bars with lesbians as your fake dates the way you did in the 50s, but public handjobs? Can we swing the pendulum back a tiny bit please? Even the head of Act Up! is like, "Um, we may want to try to pull the dicks out of our mouths for a second and say something other than ‘Got any poppers?""

so nintendogs is like that.

in other news, i love this photo:

the boxcovers from the sims make me feel slightly nauseous. i think it's the high gloss that does it. maybe you can't expect too much from a designer who made eminent domain seem like fun playtime...not that it created a whole cohort of urban planners and land use managers, at least that i know of.

this is all i could find on 3feel. i'm going to assume it's one of those things.

Well mr. dhex. Those are all interesting american thoughts, but what about the other side of the pond?

In Japan it is ridiculously difficult to own a dog. In comparison getting all three versions of Nintendogs would be a drop in the bucket. Hell, toss the DS in there and you are not yet close. Children swoon at puppies they can never own. Adults regret never owning a dog. The US was an offhand market for this game where (as your smart sister seems to see) every idiot in america can own a dog.

But that is not the only thing.

The DS allows for the perfect delivery of this game. This may seem a bit out of left field, so just feel free to ignore me.

Lets take a small study in games that brought some intuitive to this generation of gaming. Well one specifically. ICO. What is missing from this game? Any kind of menu or pause screen with statistics. It is you and the game, there is nothing "breaking the 4th wall" in there. This allows you to stop managing and more directly connect with the game. This is probably the reason you got emotionally attached to Yorda. So, we take this study, and what do we get? The less that you have to manage and check the more involved you can become with the interaction of you and the game.

How to do this with most games? Remove the act of pausing to get to menus.

Now, to do this we need to add a second screen. Is it mandatory to use this on everygame? No. Should everygame have something on both screens, no. That is not the point. It is to allow the game to interact with you more directly. How else to allow this? Touching: direct interaction. Meteos is a perfect example of this. When you are in the menus you will notice how basic they are on the touch screen. The further into the menus you go you will notice tabs on the left that allow you to go back to any point in the menu. All the extra details are on the top screen.

Kirby is another. Not only is everything done on screen, but the map is not in a pause screen. The only reason to pause is... to pause.

So we have the perfect delivery system for the type of game that Nintendo wanted to introduce to Japan. For the US it is a bit different. It was also an after though. Initially it was going to be called Puppy Times, and the point was to be more of a Tamagatchi or just a monitor system for the US, but they went with Nintendogs to accent ownership.

This could also backfire and just teach kids that when you don't like the dog your puppy turned into just get rid of it and start up a new one. Ten years from now the stray dog population will increase because no one listened to Bob Barker and Nintendogs encouraged frivolous care of puppies.

You can only start out with 3 different puppies. You can eventually get all of them off the same cart. I also have not heard anything indicating 3 different versions for the US. I have not kept up lately though.

Word on the street is that there will be 6 puppies in each US cartridge, some of which unlockable, and there will indeed be three different versions.

utilitarian reasoning does not mediate depravity. i.e. we don't sterilize the retarded anymore, not because it's not useful, but because it is obscene.

Alright, dhex, let me see if I understand this. What you're saying is best boiled down to:

you have to be a depraved, sick, bastards of a motherfucker to simulate taking a dog to a dog run and meeting with other dog owners. for fuck's sake, really.

Okay, I... hmm. This is a little bit incomprehensible to me. It feels like you've got two entirely different arguments at work, and I don't see a connection between them. Let me try to summarize further.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying Nintendogs makes people stop caring about each other.

Is that about right? Because, if it is, I might be able to begin thinking about how to answer that charge. Because I'm pretty sure I disagree emphatically.

Wes, I don't see Rotweilers in that list.

Is there an option to feed your dog raw meat, make him live outside, then train him to be a killer attack dog?

Sorry...(eplipses added for lengthy pause) but I grew up viewing dogs as solely house protectors, and hunting aids.

I never did the get the whole "cute puppy" thing. Probably because when I asked for a dog, my parents bought me a dog, and not a puppy.

The dog was a Rotweiler. I named him "the dog" and he slept outside. I was 5. He was a mean grizzly old thing, and once tried to bite my neighbour when he started shouting at me a small kid. I loved that crazy old psycho, and fed him raw bones my mother got from the local butcher. In turn he protected my home from the scum of society who would have tried to rob us.

My eyes have gone all misty from nostalgia.

"Can Nintendogs do that?!", I ask you.

no. it's a symptom of a greater sickness. and it's not about caring; if anything, people care far too much about certain facets of interaction, largely trying to avoid offending certain groups of people. (depending on what their social valuation system is, and this works both for food co ops and rednecks alike)

it's a sickness. maybe i'm just getting old. but i do see something deeply wrong with the entire concept. much like sports games. no, not everyone is going to be able to play football or basketball or go ice skating, but you can get closer to those ideals by actually participating in some sort of outdoor or athletic activity. at least experience another form of systemic rapture than digital trance states.

why experience the simulation when you can do it in real life? the simulation takes away from the need to actually achieve - maybe people, if they were that into having a dog, would take the initiative to change their life so they could get one.

again, my sister the vet thinks it's a great idea in part, though she considers most game related stuff creepy. i don't disagree with her on that front, of course, but she does feel it might discourage dog ownership. perhaps. or perhaps i'm wrong and it will increase dog ownership.

either way, it does open up some interesting ideas in terms of simulations, especially simulating the unsavory.

all this said, i have considered getting my wife a ds and the pug one, because her pug died last year and she still cries about it. now, i hated that dog and am glad its dead- her 300lb grandmother taught it to bark at the sound of my name; she's dead now as well, thankfully, but my wife refuses to have sex on her grave, or at least a picnic, which vexes me sorely - but i love my wife. it's a difficult position, for sure. at least they won't be able to feed it boiled chicken, puppy chow and pan drippings every day for 8 years, at least not without ruining the ds.
