Ok, so my last mouse lasted about two years, and after heavy use the wheel stopped working. That's ok, though.
Now I need a new one and would like it to be of the smaller laptop size. Those buttons that work like foward and backward on web pages are really excellent as well long battery life (my last one could easily go a couple months on a single double a battery). Anything in the $30-$40 range, no higher please.
Any recomendations? I bought a $15 one to hold me over for now, but it kind of sucks (it auto shuts off if you stop using it for like 5 seconds and you have to click a button to tell it you want to use it, the usb adapter flashes red when you're using the mouse, and it eats batteries). _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I know we've discussed this before but this is what I use:
ergonomic, not too big, not too small, has pretty good range, works on any surface, plus it has that nice four-direction mouse wheel thing. the only problem is the USB dongle thing is a bit fragile. but the best part is that it's free of stupid bullshit (needless extra buttons, awkward shapes, etc).
I like it! _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

Well placed forward and backward buttons makes web browsing much better. But yeah, I like logitech, I may just go with a similar model. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I absolutely adore my Logitech G5
wonderful tracking, and it's great navigating a high res display at 2000dpi |

I have been using the same Microsoft optical mouse for six years now. Still works like a charm and I would definitely recommend them.
Although to be honest I've been using laptops for the last three years primarily so I've just gotten used to using the touchpad. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

Any particular reason you're set on the laptop size?
My Logitech MX1000 is pretty much wireless laser mousing bliss. I recharge it maybe once a week, if that. It's got 4-way scrolling plus fast-scrolling buttons above and below the wheel, forward and back plus another button in between (I've set it to minimize). And it's ergonomically wonderful too- the thumb rest is a beautiful thing. |

That's a bit more mouse than I need.

Weird, I just looked these up. Neat, but a bit too much for me.

No way can I get use to the touchpad. I only use them as a last resort.

Well, here's Logitech's top-end notebook mouse, for $40 after rebate (ends in a couple days), and given my experience with their mice I'd bet money it's good. |

After switching to using a laptop this year, I find myself flicking for a phantom trackpad when I type on normal keyboards. _________________

I use a sweet ergonomic keyboard that has a little mouse pad built right in it. I also have a cheap ($10) optical mouse I've been using since ... Summer of 2002 or something. Hell, I go through scanners faster than mice.
I've been meaning to get a mousepad for a few months. _________________ Collector of over 1,538 strategy guides. That's weird, right?

Glad it worked out for you.
But seriously, try one of their fullsize good ones sometime if you get a chance. |

I have basically the same model only large size at work. It's ok, but I don't like the secondary wheel, which doesn't work because I can't install the proper software. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”
