I have a pretty large collection of these, but a lot of the best ones tend to be large so I guess I shouldn't post too many.

I like the melodramatic and tumultuous tales of lesbian Catholic schoolgirl relationships and the attempts to reconcile sexuality with religious beliefs. I don't think anyone can blame me.
Speaking of anime:

For some reason, I got very into making 40*30 animated GIFs, reduction of fullsize QT movies and the like:

Get a program like Photoshop or GIMP, stack several images on top of each other using layers, scale/delete frames to make it as efficient as possible, save as a GIF.
It takes practice. If you open a GIF in one of those programs and look at the different layers you should get the idea. _________________

Oh, I can make animated GIFs (I use the GIMP too) but I'm wondering specifically about converting video clips. Do you really do a frame-by-frame? _________________ | Little bird fighting against a bat sect game | |

Incidentally, how do you make them? |
I use an ancient, creaky photoshop wanna be program called Paint Shop Pro, version 5, and it came bundled with "Animation Shop" which can import .AVI files, as well as do reductions. The first one there is a reduction of an old Quickcam video (I think that's why I started going for 40*30, trying to make these obscenely huge (especialy for the mid-90s!) files something I could post online), the other 2 came from my Canon camera (the final one is one of those cheesy plasma ball glass spheres, close up but moving the camera.
On that page I also have a few that are just still shots glued together.
The trick is I most try to find things that loop fairly smoothly. |

Is it?
I know 5 is *really* long in the tooth, and I'm a little alarmed at my conservative streak that has stopped me from trying something else.... even when I'm aware of it's bad support for layers, and the way certain Undo/resize combinations cause the whole thing to instantly crash.
In general, my "photoshop" (in the generic sense) mojo is way weak, and I have trouble thinking in terms of transparencies instead of solid pixels.
Do you think I should try to get up to speed with The Gimp, find a version of Photoshop, upgrade PSP, or just keep chugging along the way I am now with PSP5? |

I use Photoshop Elements. It's only like $100 (vs. $700ish) and it has everything I've ever needed to use Photoshop for set into a slightly more user-friendly layout. It came with my home PC and I talked them into buying me a copy for work.

Huh, maybe I should take a look at it. Stuff like that that sometimes gets bundled with digital cameras and the like, I'm never sure if it's going to be just another photo album/red eye reducer tweaker or what. |

I do frame-by-frame, yeah. What kirkjerk said sounds easier.

The first in the post is from Metropolis. The first that I compiled is from a ridiculous video by a Taiwanese band called Loh Tsui Kweh Commune. It's NSFW, but neither is that GIF. _________________

I still use nothing but Paint Shop Pro for all graphics I work on/organize/whatever, at home and at work. It's funny to think that I've opened that program nearly every day (except for a while when I didn't have a computer) since around 1993 or so.
PSP has improved dramatically since version 5, but even the latest versions (I use both 8 and 10 currently) have some of those crashing issues. I've never seen Photoshop do anything that PSP can't. It even uses the same formats and plugins. I haven't endorsed PSP quite as much after its purchase by Corel, as that resulted in some annoying changes. Some of those changes were reversed when people complained (such as file operations in the browser), but some are still not remedied. One of these is that they no longer package Animation Shop with PSP. I don't know why. The program works just fine and doesn't really need any changes if they want to be lazy about it. (It hasn't changed in years anyway.)
One reason I've stuck with PSP all these years is that I bought it back when it was very cheap, and they've always given very nice upgrade deals when they make a new version. I think it now costs about as much as that Photoshop Elements new, though I have no idea how they compare in functionality. |

That reminds me of Matthew Smith's website. It's not online anymore, but it was incredible - it was what happens when someone who hasn't done any coding since the ZX Spectrum suddenly decides to learn HTML. He'd done a whole picture of himself in his garden, using animated gifs as 'tiles'. Each flower was a seperate animated gif. His arms, legs, head and body were all seperate animated gifs. The sun? You better believe it was a seperate animated gif. I wish it was still up. |

The key thing to understanding those gifs is that they're lesbians.
http://sbfone.livejournal.com/129637.html explains it pretty well, in IC's Sub's own words! Uh, you probably don't want to click that link at work, or if you're easily offended. |

i am not easily offended but i do need to take ritalin to understand stuff like that.
kids these days. seriously, kids these days.
ok, so like, if i saw someone's eyes get like that, i would not kiss them. i would take them to the hospital because something is seriously wrong and they're going to die without medical attention. if find this genuinely disturbing. like when you take a fuckload of acid and stare into a mirror at your pupils until they disappear.

Gifs eh? Here's some of my friend (The Ice-Countant) and I (The Ageing Hipster) doing our usual completely inane nonsense in City of Villains. Here I am, dancing with my stone hammer in my face.
And the Ice-Countant, dancing with a random stranger we met in the square. Seriously, we had a dance-off for like fifteen minutes. Great times.
And here we are preaching to trees as the sun sets.
Ah, the memories. _________________
