Everyone should play it at least once, it's real good and can be enjoyed in bursts! Especially that famous 5th level!

It's cheap now too! 32.99 at GameQuestDirect, never thought I'd see the day it would get under $50.

Yes. Glad you enjoyed it considering that (I think) that I talked you into getting it.

Anyways, did you finish it, or just mess with it? Also, I recommend playing through it every night once for at least a week straight.

it's pretty neat though. i can see how the trance vibrator was popular.

I recommend playing the game with as many lights out as possible. On top of that, once you do get use to the controls you should be able to make it throught the game pretty easily, then you start to open up different color schemes in it. Playing completly though the game for a good 5 nights in a row will only net you about 5 hours of game time, but will be completly worth it.

Yea, if you don't have a controller with vibration you lose a litte something. I was playing with a Dual Shock 1 after I had been using a DS2 for a while and I noticed quite a difference, not as intense. This is about the only game that I really appreciate vibration for, most games either get in the way, or I don't even notice.

I've never played it with vibration - I play it on my Dreamcast with a VGA box. Turn the volume up, and then put it one notch higher than whatever you just set it to. Sit close to the television. Make sure it's centered in your vision. Pay attention to the groups that enemies come in, using the beats and rhythms as clues, to find the most satisfying times to release your shots.

(psst. me too, but I still use it in arguments for games as art because it's easy. To me Rez always felt like a dumbed down Panzer Dragoon. The last stage is awesome though, that much is hard to deny)

No offense, but you can't really dumb down the original Panzer Dragoon much.

I'll come right out and say that the only Panzer Dragoon I've played is Orta - but Rez and PDO are pretty much as far apart as any two games in the same genre can get (hyperbole! but still!).

I've been playing a lot of Rez lately. In my observation, people tend to look down on the game if they don't groove with the music, and if you take that out of the equation Rez is really just half a game, if that. The area select screen is a track select, afterall.

I've got to admit, I didn't like Rez as much as I assume most people do. I can see why it's so interesting but it doesn't really do anything for me. But, like you said Wes, the fifth stage is pretty amazing.

I also really dislike Meteos and have a mild disdain for Lumines. The only Mizuguchi game I really enjoy is Space Channel 5, but I attribute that to the personality and character of all the staff besides Mizuguchi. :o

I have yet to play Rez.

I hope to buy a Japanese Dreamcast version on the unbelieveably-cheap, someday.

You poor thing! I have logged in more time playing Meteos than any other game in the past year--y'all have probably all figured that out by now. And I don't even have anyone to play multiplayer with!

I played the game for my first time today. Notes:
  • This is an awesome game to work out on a stationary bike to.
  • I am very disturbed that Area 5 features a sample from "California Soul."

I bought the game last weekend.

I'm enjoying the hell out of it... I only really play it late at night though, when my house is really dark. Wearing headphones seems to make the game more immersive, I've found, if you can get a good pair.

The Panzer Dragoon thing- I described it to a friend of mine as "Panzer Dragoon at a rave"... the basic gameplay is really similar, but Rez feels so much more satisfying.

See, I'm wondering if there's not an inate difference between gamers here. I feel like Panzer Dragoon is more satisfying because it creates its own world and places you in it, using music, cutscenes, and visuals to establish a tone and cohesiveness of an alien world. Rez is almost the opposite in that it's all about emotion, foregoing the creation of a solid world in favor of raw intensity. I get an immersive feeling with Rez, but to me this just isn't as compelling as being a part of a real world that so much creative thought went into.

This also explains why I'm not as big of a fan of Orta. The graphics are a lot better, but the feeling that you're a part of this alien world is mostly missing. There's just too much color and not enough unique architecture. But then, I gave up on Orta pretty early on so I might be talking out of my ass here.

i feel like the graphical quality has something to do with it too. in the saturn games, you have to suspend your disbelief because the graphics aren't that detailed. thus it's easier to accept the creatures you encounter. that polygon could be anything.

rez is much more abstract than panzer dragoon.

I'm probably going to end up saying the exact same stuff dessgeega said, but the low-tech graphical quality of the Saturn PD games is what makes the game so beautiful and psuedo-abstract.

I played Rez earlier with all the lights on. It takes away a lot more from the game than I thought it would.

I know I keep hearing this, but guys seriously, a really excellent surround sound system that you can crank up about as loud as you want with a nice subwoofer is a very respectable substitution*.

I borrowed Persona's copy a few days ago, and I think I'm going to buy myself one. I really like how simple it is; I find it kinda stress relieving. I've only gotten to the third stage though, so maybe I'll get more frustrated as I play more?

Quoted for TRUTH!

I am not a fan of using headphones. Especially expensive ones. May as well invest in decent speakers once you get up there (unless you're a recording artist of some kind). My big ears get sore after having them on for any stretch of time over 30 minutes. Then again I used to be a candy kid (so, so long ago) and thus I am privy to a nice thunderous sound system. Besides how can I properly rock out on Guitar Hero and DDR if I have this obnoxious thing on my head.
