I just found out that Saturn had 16:9 mode. This has to be the first console (although it is mentioned that the 32X had fake 16:9 mode) to have it. Which is way ahead of the next console to support it. Anything else about this nifty system? I know that there are interesting things out there.

I just picked up Panzer Dragoon II, which apparently supports 16:9. Sweet!

What the hell are CD+G discs? I have seen some kind of option for this but I did not know what they were.

Yea, I knew you may actually check the forums so I wanted to get that info out there. You should test it and let me know how Zwei is.

The Saturn can do everything. Play CDs, Play CD+Gs, Play Music CDs with an awesome space background featuring a ship that flies around, play the music from games, tell time, play games in widescreen, save games to the system, requires only an easy switch mod to play imports, get online with the Net Link Cartridge, umm I don't know what else.

CD+g was a format that was released the same time as Music CDs and CD-ROMs which allowed on-screen text and/or images to display along with the music. I'm pretty sure the music could be played on a standard CD player, but you would need a CD+g player to display the art/text. Needless to say, these didn't take off at all in the states, but they were sort of popular in Japan, where the format was used for Karaoke.

Protip: The original $300 Sega CD (the tray loading one) came with a shitload of stuff, including a generic as all hell CD+g disc. You can probably find this disc on Ebay for pretty cheap.

Here's a CD+g faq that might answer any more questions.

To this day I'm a still astounded that an xbox cannot do this properly. I'd rather replace a battery everyfive years than reset the date every single time I unplug the system.

Nonsense! My formerly local karaoke bar used CD+G for years and years. I think they ripped them all to MP3+G recently, though, so you can ask for songs by name rather than CD number and track.

For a while, I was obsessed with the idea of burning my own pirate karaoke CD+G CDs. I never managed to make it happen, but I did manage to devocalize William Shatner singing "Mr. Tambourine Man" before my authoring software crashed out on me.

Yes! I mean HOT DAMNED YEAH MAN!!!

This has been one of the things that has annoyed me since day one about the Xbox. And yet no one else seems to care. M$ are worth billions of dollars, and they can't even program a freakin'clock correctly?! I mean, WTF?! And people are buying 360s off these people?

Nothing of mine is left plugged in. TVs, videos, game systems, computers, lamps, phones, EVERYTHING.

Except my fridge and freezer.

Eventually I got so annoyed I just changed the bios on my Xbox, so now it ignores the time completely.

I point blank refuse to keep changing it EVERY FRIGGIN DAY I turn the machine on.

Seriously, I can rant for days on this subject. DAYS.

It's like having a car where the lights won't turn on if there's gas in the tank, or pants that randomly explode, or a solar powered torch, or water proof soap, or a radiator that's made out of cheese.

Totally functionless.

Ever so slightly off-topic, but does anyone know if the PS2 remake of Panzer Dragoon will be released on the Western continents?

The Saturn was backed by Segata Sanshiro. Which is cooler than Paris Hilton and Ellijah Woods combined.

The Saturn was the first platform for Shenmue.

The Saturn has yet to be computer-emulated well.

That comparison wouldn't leave anyone unfamiliar with Segata Sanshiro the impression that he's very cool at all. On my best days, I believe myself to be slightly cooler than Paris Hilton, which isn't saying much.

To show Segata Sanshiro the proper respect, a more vivid comparison is needed - say, Segata Sanshiro is cooler than Billy Idol. That phrase would make even the most avid of non-gamer tighten up and breathe softy, "Wow."

Fujioka is known as the original Kamen Rider (Masked Rider), and he is also known among the Japanese gaming community for his comical character Segata Sanshiro, who was featured in several TV commercials for the Sega Saturn.

Holy shit, this man is a god.

He was also in the Dreamcast and X-box Rent-a-Hero game.
As Segata Sanshiro, of course.

Wikipedia wrote:
Sanshiro was a Judo master that tracked down and beat up people who were not playing the Sega Saturn. His name sounds similar to the phrase "Sega Saturn shiro!" meaning roughly "You must play Sega Saturn!"

Sanshiro lived as a hermit high on a mountain, devoting his life to intensive Sega Saturn training. He trained physically by carrying around a giant Sega Saturn and punching a giant controller, and mentally by breaking piles of bricks with his head. But he would also frequently visit the city to seek out people who were not playing the Sega Saturn, and harshly teach them a lesson. In one commercial he barges into a nightclub and beats up everyone inside; in another, he beats up three youths who irresponsibly go outside to play baseball instead of playing video games and in another he attempts to throw down seveal zombies in a parking lot to not much success (He is shown to be ok in the next advert though). Sanshiro was a serious man with a firm sense of duty, and he believed that playing video games was the most valuable activity in life.

When the Saturn was phased out and the Sega Dreamcast released, Sanshiro's end came in the form of a commercial involving a missile launched by Sony directed at the Tokyo headquarters of SEGA. Sanshiro heroically jumped onto the missile and deflected it into the atmosphere, and was killed in the following explosion. The voiceover said that "Segata Sanshiro will live on in your hearts."

The character became very well known in Japan, and helped make the Saturn successful in that country. He appeared in his own game, Segata Sanshirō Shinkenyūgi. It is said this game is the last one produced for the aged Saturn.

This is why Sega deserves to be lamented now and then.
