"A school spokeswoman told WND that the "God Delusion" was not a part of the biology curriculum, and several of the professors she contacted said they had not even read the book. However, the spokeswoman was unable to contact all of the professors in the department and could not state that none of them had suggested the book to Jesse."

someone might have left it out on the counter, even.

Two things, the first is that veganism and regard for animal rights are not difficult positions to come to, and what PETA is much less about the awareness of animal suffering than it is about maintaining mindshare of the PETA brand so that when some kid in their late teens starts thinking that maybe veal buffets and cock fighting are less than totally awesome that kid will provide work and cash for PETA instead of someone else. The ASPCA is still out there working to stop animal fighting for entertainment and all sorts of other abuse against animals, but the name PETA is the first that comes to mind when you mention animal rights to most people. That is the goal of most things PETA does.

Second is the turkey slaughtering operation behind Palin is one of the most remarkably humane setups for slaughtering poultry. The chute the bird is put in headfirst makes the blood rush to the turkey's head making the bird start to pass out. At the same time the chute holds the bird keeping it from breaking any of its bone without clamping the thing down. Then the bird gets its throat cut and it bleeds out quickly into the trough. Compare it to the sort of operation you'd see at Tyson where the birds are shackled down and struggling, then their necks are mechanically stretched to make it easier to decapitate them while they're still conscious.

that is just plain weird.

i can see the problems with for profit organ/part donation, to be sure, but the current setup really only benefits two entities - the hospital or medical provider and the reseller. people who need organs - or people who need cash - are still largely fucked.

i would have said the annoying woman from seinfeld but then had to add a OH YEAH THEY WERE ALL ANNOYING WOMEN and throw in a few elbows to the rib just in case the joke hadn't taken hold.

michael richard's outburst was the best thing to happen that year. no more soup nazi jokes! no more hey did you see that episode nudges. no more how can you not like seinfeld conversations with near strangers who, as far as i could tell, should probably stick their heads in a garbage disposal and not hit the off switch until 2+2=77.

what a glorious day that was.

Quote:
But the scarcity of truly crappy subprime-mortgage bonds no longer mattered. The big Wall Street firms had just made it possible to short even the tiniest and most obscure subprime-mortgage-backed bond by creating, in effect, a market of side bets. Instead of shorting the actual BBB bond, you could now enter into an agreement for a credit-default swap with Deutsche Bank or Goldman Sachs. It cost money to make this side bet, but nothing like what it cost to short the stocks, and the upside was far greater.

The arrangement bore the same relation to actual finance as fantasy football bears to the N.F.L. Eisman was perplexed in particular about why Wall Street firms would be coming to him and asking him to sell short. “What Lippman did, to his credit, was he came around several times to me and said, ‘Short this market,’ ” Eisman says. “In my entire life, I never saw a sell-side guy come in and say, ‘Short my market.’”

And short Eisman did—then he tried to get his mind around what he’d just done so he could do it better. He’d call over to a big firm and ask for a list of mortgage bonds from all over the country. The juiciest shorts—the bonds ultimately backed by the mortgages most likely to default—had several characteristics. They’d be in what Wall Street people were now calling the sand states: Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada. The loans would have been made by one of the more dubious mortgage lenders; Long Beach Financial, wholly owned by Washington Mutual, was a great example. Long Beach Financial was moving money out the door as fast as it could, few questions asked, in loans built to self-destruct. It specialized in asking homeowners with bad credit and no proof of income to put no money down and defer interest payments for as long as possible. In Bakersfield, California, a Mexican strawberry picker with an income of $14,000 and no English was lent every penny he needed to buy a house for $720,000.

you know, when you're high on drugs, stuff like this makes a lot of sense:

Quote:
The Obama administration needs to encourage the sort of saving that will put consumers on sounder financial footing and free up resources that could be directed at long overdue investments in transportation infrastructure, alternative energy, education, worker training and the like. This strategy would not only create jobs but would also cut America’s dependence on foreign saving and imports. That would help reduce the current account deficit and the heavy foreign borrowing such an imbalance entails.

Require alcohol, junk food (including *anything* made with high fructose corn syrup and/or primarily recieving its starting energy/mass from corn), gasoline purchases, ATM access, credit card usage, appliances, consumer electronics, jewelry, furs, chrome hubcaps, and imports to have a mandatory $1 lottery ticket added to the transaction. Plus and additional one for every $10 of the purchase.

Maybe throw in water, butter/sugar/etc., electricity.

Like a sugar-coated VAT. (Well, aspartame coated. Don't want to encourage bad habits.)

I was kind of pleased to discover that the reason, revealed in the penultimate episode, that what's-her-name (Elaine?) was so angry and bitter is because she went to my university, Tufts. The school is a bit of an injoke among some writers I guess; it's full of people with Ivy league aspirations for whom it was their safety.

They claim it is otherwise but I don't buy it for a second.

Essentially a number of leaks to the public have been made from that office. Not that that in itself is illegal; there's a tradition of it in British politics, actually, and so long as its viewed as informing the public, they're in the clear.

Of course, that's not the reason he's getting his house raided ad nauseam on paper, but the claim that there is "concern" as a result of these leaks that there are going to be more - and that they will enable terrorists and foreign interests and other big nasties - is utterly insane.

my favorite things about working with academic clients include having all the stereotypes about being a bunch of fuckups who couldn't cut it in the real world because they have no grasp of day-to-day realities completely and thoroughly validated on a regular schedule.

i imagine young kids feel like this when they learn most rappers don't actually own gold plated cars and rent their jewelry for video shoots.

Ugh. Yes. A few semesters back a professor had us read about 15 journal articles a week. Not only was it grueling, but you also got a chance to see just how out of touch most of his contemporaries had become. I think I got the biggest kick out of it - organizational behavior - loathing to mention money as a motivating factor. Instead, we're supposed to pat some backs, high-five, and ruffle up some hair with a good 'atta boy! to get stuff done.

We had an MBA meeting last week, since graduation is this weekend. The dean, head program advisor and a few older professors wanted to know our thoughts. A handful brought up how useless the organizational behavior class was, but the only response was, "Well! I don't shy away from hard work!" What? Fuck you. It's your job to read shit, ape it, then pretend like it matters. The few reasonable people there didn't care enough to be there to say anything. I think the reason that is because the new interim head of the program is the one who said "The Jews" run our banks. That's got to be a morale buster.

edit: finally remembered what I originally wanted to post about. The "shit in pants" thing seemed as if it might have been related to that video.

gold funds are generally not terrible, but they're definitely not the grand slam home run some folks make them out to be.

i mean, long and short of it is that most people don't plan for the long term. a long term loss of 20% or 30% of your portfolio at 25 is meaningless because in the long term you're still going to destroy so long as you keep your priorities straight.

what i'm really amazed these days in the wake of the whole madoff thing is the people saying "oh i put my life savings in with one guy and now i have nothing!"

how the fuck did these people make millions of dollars and yet act so frickin' stupidly? if a man approaches you in the street and says "here's a briefcase with 20 grand in it" do you take the thing or do you walk the fuck away?

I'm not sure what their definition of well known is, but I only know of two or three companies that would put that out. I think the best candidate would be CDV.

awesome.

and by awesome i mean "holy shit that's stupid."

one of these days i'm going to occupy something for half a dozen disparate, unconnected reasons and perhaps even issue communiques detailing the non-connections. and then i'll punch myself in the face for half an hour before teabagging a blender and going out bud dwyer style, because all of that makes about as much sense as:

"It is not just this university but also New York City that is in crisis: in the next several months, thousands of us will be losing our jobs, while housing remains unaffordable and unavailable to many and the cost of living skyrockets...Be assured, this is only the beginning...with this occupation, we inaugurate a wave of occupations in New York City and the United States, a coming wave of occupations, blockades, and strikes in this time of crisis."
