this a thread to be periodically updated with videogame skill and speel replays that have been deemed worth sharing with others.

for starters there's:

system shock 2 co-op speedrun by D and dirtyminuth. each of the run's two segments is available from either player's perspective, or, awesomely, both perspectives side-by-side (the "sbs" files).

r-type delta no-miss replay by kiken. kiken has been working on the r-type series game-by-game (3 is also worth watching), and delta is one of the series's essential episodes.

let's all watch together!

There's this 8 minute Morrowind speedrun, which I find especially amusing because it so blatantly subverts the nature of the game.

I'm going to watch the System Shock one. I'm mostly interested in speed runs for unexpected games.

rayforce all-clear replay by ben shinobi. you may have read about this game in a little magazine called the gamer's quarter. ben shinobi vs. con-human. (ben shinobi wins.)

bubble bobble one-credit clear by ben shinobi. another game you may have heard of in the gamer's quarter. um, several times. old ben shinobi pulls scoring tricks i'd never even heard of. and gets the happy ending, no less.

sonic the hedgehog 2 speed runs by nathan jahnke. the metroid database's own nate performs individual stage runs of everyone's favorite sonic game (except mine). there's also a torrent.

Cyphus_Doc_vs._Ray_Marth

Here's a professional Super Smash Bros. Melee match, featuring one of my closet friends, Cyphus.

Here's he is playing a friendly match against a Marth player. This was taken from the tourney that was held in Baton Rouge not too long ago, and Cyphus walked away with third place from that competition.

It was just a few days ago that he went out to another tourney in Texas. So at this point, I don't ever think that I'll catch up to him in skill. But we still play for fun.

Cyphus hopes to one day have one of the nations best Doc. Mario's, and from the look of this vid, I hope you'll all agree that he's well on his way.

Read this about the upcoming Treasure Box for PS2. It's a collection of three Treasure made games including Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Heady, and Alien Soldier, and it comes with the versions that were released in all regions with and without the flicker that was present in the originals. I posted this here because apparently the game is going to come with Speed Run videos of all of the games present, along with the ability to record your own speed runs and replay them whenever. This is an awesome feature that should be added to all classic collections, and possibly even new games. Have you heard about this yet dess?

indeed i have and i am very excited!

i'm particularly glad they've chosen to include all the regional versions of the games, since the north american dynamite headdy is probably better than the japanese.

alien soldier super hard speedrun by mrmonkeyman. mrmonkeyman has been doing pure speed runs of the easier difficulty settings of the game, but this one is done at the very hardest. and is purportedly faster than the speedun included in the treasure box!

the third replay i posted in this thread was of layer section (the saturn port of rayforce). where ben shinobi's victory was narrow and desperate, this is the work of a master:

rayforce playthrough by fukuda rengou-h.f. no ships lost except for an intentional death at the very beginning and ship burning at the very end. the chaining is amazing to watch, and the bosses are taken apart piece-by-piece. and there's no screen-stretching.

this is the sort of thing that makes me, as a taito fangirl, weak in the knees. don't tell the people over at the konami party.

gg aleste 2 no-miss run. this compile shooter (power strike 2 in the west) is probably my favorite game gear game.

i have a sort of infatuation with handheld ports of console shooters. (i just bought a copy of gradius: interstellar assault.) i think it's because the platform requires the game to be reduced to its purest essence while simultaneously pushing the hardware to the limits of its ability.

anyway interstellar assault is a fabulous gradius game regardless of what shaper says.

Super Mario 64 in 16:27

It's tool-assisted and in the boss courses it's downright creepy in a "there is no spoon" sort of way. To this day I denouce Mario 64 as a triple A title. Seriously, it sucks.

It would be neat to do "learning curve" movies where it shows a player starting off as an inexperienced novice, and then becoming really good at a game.

Ie. In Tony Hawks games it would show them crash and burning at the start of the game and then show the way that they got better and finish off with some great combos, lines and great scores on goals.

So through editing it would show the "story" of learning the game.

demo play movies are much cooler than super play movies. (at least to someone who's never played the game before.)

incidentally, the super play movies in the treasure box are pretty super indeed!

gradius V first loop by UMI. uses type 3 rather than those aimable lasers everyone's so infatuated with. fun with flamethrowers and formation options.

On the SSBM vid:

I'm a fan of fighters, but I'm not a hardcore fighting fan (although I share similar knowledge *of* fighters, I don't share similar love). Atypically, Super Smash Brothers/Melee is one of my favorite ones...but this video only impresses me to a certain degree.

In one way, I can see the argument for transposing the gameplay of SSB/M onto a traditional flat plane, a la most fighting games...but at the same time, half of the charm of a game(s) like SSB/M *is* their organic, and geometric (as it were) environment. This is why I prefer Powerstone or Smash Brothers over Soul Calibur.

Anyway, I'd love to see a fight that not only fully utilised the characters, but the environment too.

gradius V has been popular lately.

gradius V loop 10 bosses by shinya. no force fields, no miss. warning: completely nuts.

The first one says "you're not allowed to do this."

The description for the We <3 Katamari one is humorously apologetic.
