I'm trying to ease up on the A button, but it's really difficult to do so. Hooray for the inclusion of retro mode again, but I'm sad to see so many shortcuts gone.

Here's my friend code. Post away!

I have almost all of the Grand Prix races finished and have a nice amount of time in online and multiplayer (1-cart). I am just now starting to find a comfortable position to play this game in. Before now I wanted to rip my thumbs off.

Every time I buy a Mario Kart, I beat the entire Circuit section in no more than two sittings. I like that it's short enough to do that, and also that it features enough replay value that I still love going back and playing the old SNES tracks.

I've never been able to find anyone from friend codes. It's kinda disappointing.

Oh, and top 5 things I'm hoping to be able to download to my Revolution:
1. Secret of Mana
2. Mario Kart 64 (Missed it entirely)
3. Earthbound (actually, my fantasy is that they release Mother 3 in the US, along with a GBA port of Earthbound and a translated Mother NES Classic cart. Haw.)
4. Super Metroid (It's just not the same emulated. It requires the lowering of defenses that come from being sunk into a couch.)
5. I'm not sure, really. Those are the only ones I really pine for.

You know to look for the friend icon over the signal strength icon right?

Anyways, yea, it is really miss with a tiny bit of hit. Your best bet is to have an IM program available.

MK64 is still the only game I played with my entire family more than one sittings worth (Me, Sister, Mom, Dad). In fact my mom remembered playing MK64 when I pulled out the DS version over thanksgiving.

Did you get one of those special limited edition thumb straps? Anyways, you can count my wife as jelous.

I played a few rounds on Sat. after midnight. I may play some more between editing the magazine. Hit me up on AIM (shapermc) if you want to challenge me.

It's apparently a "wrist strap." It's not as long as the thumb strap (which was also included), and it doesn't have the plastic things on it. On the other hand, the material is thicker, and it has a little charm with Mario driving a kart.

It also comes with racing-themed decals, but I have not yet applied them.

Will those make your DS go faster?
And now that that's out of the way, discussion can continue.

The Japanese commercial for this game is freaking HILARIOUS. Has 4 different Mario's all over the world . . . America, Italy, Japan, and one other place. Basically they were advocating the Wifi thing, but the characters that play Mario and Luigi here are great!

Tablesaw, when I input your friend code, my DS tells me it's not a valid code. Hrrrrrrmmmm?

My code is 416671-332656 (Doc Octorock)

I'm trying to race against friends, but no one is online...

By the way, that "snaking" thing – is that what it's called? It exists in F-Zero GX too, doesn't it? I was playing against "worldwide" opponents, and ran into a number of people zigzagging in a crazy and obnoxious way. Is this the maneuver? How do you do it? It's so annoying!

They're basically just powersliding down straight track.

I'm finally playing online now and I love it! Although most of my regional matchups seem to have been 12-year-old French girls who can't even use the drift. I've been letting people win the odd race here and there, or pulling up at the starting line and letting them catch up before the next lap. It's nice.

My friends code is: 047305 - 470087

After you have a few regional/worldwide wins and losses just stick with the rivals option. You will get much better races.

I have a silly question . . . how does the WiFi work? If you have a wireless network at your house, does it allow you to hook up to it with your DS and to play games like this?

Well, yes. And there's no hooking up that is required, as far as I know. My friend had his DS at my place and since I had a router hooked up, he could use the online feature with no problem.

By the way, this stuff has got to be giving us cancer, or something. It's all just too good not to have a catch. Paranoia+1

The only issue you may have is that if you have the wrong type of security encryption on your router you may have to switch it (I think WPA or something like that). So, yes. BUT! There are a few routers that the DS does not like, so you may be part of the unlucky 10%.

It could be worse. You could be one of the 80% of poor idiots who bought the WiFi USB adaptor thinking it would actually, you know, WORK with some of the most common wired routers and firewall software.

With about a half hour of tinkering which involves lowering the security setting of my firewall, reinstalling the WiFi USB drivers and registration tool (due to the nifty 'feature' that causes the WiFiReg.exe to hang each and every time I start it), disabling the vanilla Internet Connection Sharing set up by the installer, bridging my own connection, and double-checking the router settings... I can finally get the WiFi setup tool on Mario Kart or Animal Crossing to actually connect to WFC. I cannot, however, find a single opponent in Mario Kart (even when a friend is actively looking), and I cannot connect at all in-game in Animal Crossing. The problem, apparently, lies with my very common Linksys BEFSR41 router, and ZoneAlarm. Nintendo apparently didn't count on users of the USB adaptor to have computers secured from the internet: The installer basically slaps the drivers on your machine and creates a generic ICS connection to the USB adaptor, with absolutely no configuration tailored to your specific machine settings.

To be blunt, it's a shoddy product released with VERY little compatability testing and extremely buggy software.

That is very messed up. See I am in a hotel, connected to their server which is firewalled, through my laptop while running my firewall program. The only thing is that I shut down my firewall while installing the program (because it said to) and then turned it back on when I was done. I have only had one problem with connecting to the WiFi adapter, but I restarted my DS and it worked fine.

It seems odd that you are having all these problems. Perhaps you should just buy a real firewall program and not depend on a free one? Also you are the only person who I know of to have problems with the WiFi adapter.

I finally played the damn thing at Target today just to see what all the fuss was about. Prior to those three laps at the figure eight, I'd figured I would just wait a few years until I could get a used DS dirt cheap, just like I do with almost every system seein' how I'm not exactly loaded for cash. My New Year's resolution is now to have a Revolution *and* DS before the end of the year. After all, this is basically a reincarnation of Kart 64 (which owned me for four years), and online play doesn't stay popular forever.

Quick question:

When adding someone's friend code, do you have to add in their current nickname as well?
