it took some minor tweaking but i have ss2 running real fast and smooth on my win2k machine. i never got the chance to play it when i bought it (whenver it came out) so it's been interesting...it's far different than the first, which was more like a violent puzzle game with minor creepouts.

i love the voice acting, especially the ever so polite english ai that's trying to kill you.

"sorry there old chap, but i'm afraid we're going to have to make you part of the many here...you understand, budget cuts and all."

there's an arc of an idea - or an element or something - initially from ultima 4 and mutating all the way over to deus ex that i can't quite identify, but you know when you're playing a game from this particular gene pool. dunno if that's largely warren spector, the framework garriott and he developed, me confusing nostalgia with quality or little bits of each.

Shame on me but what's "SS2?"

System Shock 2?
Samurai Showdown 2?
Slick Squirrels meet the Cowboys of Moo Mesa 2?

(He´s talking about System Shock 2)

Yes, the fact that the last thing you hear from the mutants is "I´m sorry" before they either bludgeon you to death or you blow them to bits, is pretty scary. I actually have had nightmares about the droning midwives you encounter a little later in the game.

I think the audio is pretty good all over. It was one of the first games I played where you could position an enemy by listening where the sound came from, something you really need to do since they respawn all over the place.

The music is ok too. One track in Killer7 reminded me of the music in SS2.

That is pretty much the equivalent of getting it running on a XP machine, right?

Getting SS2 to run in XP is a hassle and a half.

2K wasn't that hard. What exactly did you do (like optimize or play around with patches/add-ons), dhex?

- had to run the installation from the start menu (switch is -lgforce something or other)
- had to patch it before running it.
- had to step back one set of nvidia drivers

that's it.

it's pretty creepy. sort of like, angry disturbing.

like i hope the full version of FEAR will be.

oh yeah the add on fan textures that have been developed - SHTUP - are very good.

I had no trouble running it under XP. HMM!

It's great though, isn't it?

yeah, it is.

i mean, system shock (the original) was seminal, and i feel like a stupid ass for never having gotten this up and running when it first game out.

i think i'm going to try and track down warren spector for an interview. i want to blame him for my childhood.

I hunted it down again. This time, I can´t get it to work on my XP machine however many tweaks and tricks I use Sad HL2 doesn´t work anymore either. Something bad must have happened (maybe Shodan has taken contol of it?) I´m considering a clean reinstall of Windows. That takes forever. I really want to play this again though.
