I totally just picked up a copy of Retro Gamer yesterday. Your Russia article was excellent.

You don't need to convince me. I still have the copy protection spinner decoder somewhere in my attic.

I recently read a feature on Japanese games developers who are starting to cater their games to the USA market, because the Japanese market is shrinking. They talked about making Zelda more realistic. I actually thought the cell shading was the best thing that happened to it.

How was it that you liked Wind Waker? Seriously, I'm just curious.

At first, I had just thought that the recent changed toward a more realistic Zelda game was a decision based on the franchise as a whole, and not just these here westerner’s interests.
Even though I'm a little bias of how well executed the cell shaded look was, I don't think that my opinion is setting the standard for how other gamers had perceived it. And odds are, there are likely more people that like that look than what may be reported.

I think the cel shaded visuals are what I like most about Wind Waker. Yep. After a certain point they were the only reason I continued to play the game.

I always wanted to make my own ridiculous homebrew grainy FMV game for the SegaCD.

Is your CDI coming with the atrocious FMV Zelda games?

Im buying them to later either dispell or prove the rumours.

You will probably prove it. The game came out in a time of nostalga for me where I even liked Deadly Towers and could put up with quite a bit. I remember hating the game, I played it for about an hour at a friends house. I was excited to play it too, being a Zelda game and all (and me being obsessed with the Zelda series still), it was not until later that I realised that I held the same opinion as most about the CDI games. We also played one other thing on it before going back to something awesome like Mortal Kombat II.

The MKII thing was just to show you what kind of crap I thought was good in comparison to the CDI Zelda game. I use to try to defend MK once.

So, were you drawing nudes for reasons that were not academic, then? From how I'm reading this, it sounds like you weren't enrolled in any schools during this 'gap'. Are you speaking about a trade school and not a state arccredited college, or something?

I'm confused. How could you end up drawing naked laides and not have it be a curriculum?

What are these secrects you speak of?
[I'm not trying to sound uppity, by the way. I'm seriously morbidly curious about this.]

So yeah, thats basically A-levels in a nutshell.

The above is mostly accurate, as far as I can remember.

Well, thanks for answering me back, Szczepaniak.

In that mad little stream of words that I wrote earlier asking about how the curriculum worked, I was trying to asking a direct question so thanks for seeing through to that. Smile

I guess A-levels would be sort of like a breaking-the-student-in step, or something to perpare you for a university. Though, I can see how the process can be sort of stressful with having to attend a program for 2 more years of learning before you're even eligiable to be evaluated, making the journey to a Uni seems more of an excersie of determination rather than retained knowlegde.

But hey, if you can put up with that criteria than more power to ya. I don't think its possible to learn too much, so some extra education doesn't sound too bad. But it does sound like an awful hurdle to have to do if you're already ready to start on your degrees right after high school.
At least you can choose your classes.

Secretes revealed! I never finished RE4. It lost what ever charm it had that made me enjoy it at first. It is probably my favorite RE game, but I never really liked the others no matter how many times I tried.

i've found i like games less because i suck at them, and it only gets worse as i get older.

the same goes for classics as well. i don't think i could revisit many of them, and even those i really want to (system shock 1 and 2, for example) i can't actually go back to cause they won't run in win 2k.

I loved Code Veronica, but I love RE4 even more. It's not anywhere near as scary, but it's much better as an action game. My guess would be that your enjoyment is based too much on expectations. You hear about all of these big games and you expect to really like them, and when they're not exactly what you expected, you don't. You probably didn't expect to like the CD-i Zelda games much, so when you found out that they're actually somewhat playable it was probably a pretty nice surprise.

I do have a question though. Which "Zelda" game did you get? There are three. If you've got Zelda's Adventure that's actually worth a whole lot of money. I recently acquired Hotel Mario but I haven't played it yet.

Just loosen up.

The trick is not to hate anything. There are plenty of games I don't play, but I don't actively dislike them. It seems like a waste of energy.

I suppose my position would be different if I allowed my expectations to get ahead of me, or if I spent more than a pittance on games every year.

Anyway, I think good taste is being able to see the bad and the good in everything, and then appreciating those things for what they're trying to do.

That last bit was needlessly philosophical - disregard.

I don't have a clue how you're genuinely having a problem keeping ashley alive. She moves behind you and ducks whenever you draw a weapon. Apart from two fairly simple sniping sequences, she's never in danger at all. I used one healing item on her the entire game. Or is it just the idea you hate?

Just read some of your article on Super Metroid in Retro, the two ideas that really struck me were the way that the game includes the "new game" screen almost as a concession to old school interface design. (The other was the emphasis on making an "eco-system".). So I was thinking how would a game play if it didn't have a starting menu?

It would go from the intro credits (ie. Activision), to being in control of the game, there wouldn't be any enemies in the first section or any other form of pressure. so the player would have time to get used to the controls. In this section there would be a computer that would allow you to log-in under any name you want (ie. create different save-files). You could be Bob, or Jennifer etc. and the name you give would be the name it uses for you.* Instead of an in-game menu they could have you select transports / teleporters like they did in System Shock 2, and (Quake).
This game would use an autosave / save-on-death system like Zelda or Fahrenheit.

*Or it would give you a name to start with and you would just name your log-in email account.*
