James Harvey if the 100-in-1 Klik & Play Pirate Kart is not the punk rock of videogames I will eat my hat. The tools exist, and though they may be limited by more than your imagination, there are certainly three chords you can learn to start a band.

james harvey, i have been saying this for ages. well, not that programmers aren't creative. just that they shouldn't monopolize the creation of videogames.

The same is true for all software, really.

I keep meaning to play that. I have like about 30 seconds more of very boring vector-based shit to animate and when I'm done I will check it out.

i havn't decided how i feel about every extend extra extra yet. but it's out. the fourth stage is cute, and the mode where you're given ridiculous firepower and allowed to shoot back at enemies is fabulous.

i think its Q?'s best game since lumines.

i absolutely love how the ridiculous length of the chains kinds of gives the thing a certain turn-based feel. it gives it this whole observational stage where you're planning your 3 seconds of shield. also, how great is the whole quicken/BPM system they've added. you really see how wonderful it is when you dies after a very long perfect run and the music goes back to normal, and everything is slow and you're basically wasting your time.

also, play with ur muzik is crazy.
ive never seen something so elaborate.

and then i just like having a high score that's in the trillions.

Interesting. See, I think I hate E4. I only played the demo, but I can't stand how it seems to play itself. E3 might not have looked and sounded very good, but at least it let you play the game.

The shooting mode is interesting, I'm just not sure how I feel about the fact that it lasts seemingly forever without ever being remotely challenging.

Everyday Shooter's still great!

I don't think Shaper will mind - if so, I'll delete this - but I have a Halo 3 Legendary Edition to give away. Odd that we didn't get a review copy of the regular version, but we did get this. Eh.

I also think E4 doesn't get challenging fast enough.

I like my arcade games to kick me in the balls ASAP.

ARGH! Twice now the same person has outbid me on old magazine auctions, both times by fifty cents with less than half a minute to go. Computer Gaming Magazine '95 complete and '97 complete have been lost. I really wanted that '95 set, too.

ezsniper.com is your friend

you gotta pay for it after the first couple, but it's saved me much money in the long run (plus it costs hardly anything) and it's very rare i'll lose an auction (unless someone else REALLY wanted it more than I did, which is ok since I'd rather not waste the money).

Why doesn't Black save my control preferences? I mean, it can't even remember that I like inverted aim and rumble everytime I boot it up. Why the default is for both of those features to be "off" is another matter that perplexes me.

Yeah, tis happens to me more frequently than it should. It helps if you just limit what/where you look.

I was looking at getting some skin art of Silent Hill iconogrphy, and was recently told that I couldn't get anything with enclosed figures (closed circles, or the like) and was wondering if anybody could post some that meet this requirement.

It's hard for me to think of something with no circles in it.

That's interesting. So for example you couldn't have a tattoo of a letter 'o'? Is it because the disc of skin would fall out?

On tatoos you can, but scarification is a different matter since damaging tissue that feeds the tissue in the center can cause complications.

SHIT MAN! That's my plan. I have this fairly full folder of the Sign Of Metatron that I'm going to be taking to an artist within the next week. I've been planning this tattoo for over a year.

As for nothing with a circle... you're pretty screwed. I understand why you can't really do it either. My guess would be something like character line art? I don't know, this would get complicated based on size. I almost want to recommend the SH4 teaser images of James as a ghost (which I can't find anymore for the lIFE of me), or Pryamid Head:

What are your favorite videogame characters whose alternate costume is just them but in blackface?

Please click this link to see but one example.

What are your favorite instances of blackface in videogames, generally?

You mean outside of the ones in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Squaresoft, NES)?

(lower right)

I would have to go with Oil Man from Mega Man Powered Up:

Also a Pokemans:

that's amazing on tom sawyer, given that tom sawyer is a book about racism.

harveyjams's original question is much more interesting though.

You're right. I just realized that I'm looking at Huck Finn. I thought the title of the game was "Huck Finn" but it's "Tom Sawyer," which changes things for me.

I think that if Jim were giving a peace sign it would be just about the only way to make his image more grotesque than it is.

Regardless of how it fits into the book, tonality issues and what have you, I kind of like their design of Jim. I've never seen sausage lips with stripes on them before. They sort of look like they've been on the griddle. The manga industry eventually ruled against such depictions of blacks in popular media for a while, instead just making black people look exactly like white people but with different coloured skin, which if anything is even more offensive. I'd like to see what the Japanese depiction of blacks would have evolved into in the following 20 years had they not nipped this tradition in the bud, since these days Japanese people generally depict themselves like this:

I can't imagine how they would have ended up drawing black people if they'd been allowed to carry on like that.

Also, I saw a Japanese guide to living and staying in England which was hilarious, mainly because of how all caucasian people were depicted as having enormous noses. The only instance of this I could find on the net was this admittedly tame example from my old website:

Maybe this is old news, but I stumbled upon this youtube (your tub?) poster that has at least 200 videos all dedicated towards video game violence against women.

i dunno bro, the alternative seems to be making them into flattened pygmies with mouths that make up 3/4ths of their body weight.

a palette swap seems delightfully casual in comparison.

Damn you James Harvey James. I just played through DJ Boy again because of this thread. The blackface version of the main character during the mirror match still made it into the US version.

It's pretty much Double Dragon on roller skates. So it's an auto scrolling brawler. Playing through it again there is a lot of blackface style pallete swaps, especially in the level with the mirror match.

Apparently the Japanese version had even more in it. It's a lot more obvious now than when I was twelve.

WHY EDGE PISSES ME OFF

Here's a brilliant example of what annoys me about Edge Magazine.

This is an article about that famous Street Fighter III battle featuring Diago you've all seen on youtube. It's a non-article. I say this because the only people who are going to understand jargon-filled sentences like 'As if to suffocate Daigo’s comeback, Wong chooses this moment to input the two quarter-turns to execute Chun-Li’s 15-part Houyoku-Sen Super Art' are people who are already into this sort of thing and have probably seen the clip in question anyway. If they'd explained the fight and its appeal in ways that even someone who had never played a game like this could understand, then there would be a point to it. Narrowing its focus as it does to the already converted, it's functionally useless as a piece of writing since all it does is describe the fight to people who can easily just watch it themselves and probably have done.

Like much of Edge, it's little more than posturing for their imagined demographic- 'look how seriously we take this stuff! We write articles about it and everything!' - without actually saying anything of importance or interest.

Their articles mainly read like they're written by the same old Future Publishing hacks who write all the other crappy magazines- the only thing that's different is that they have to conform to a style guide that asks them to write like an android who's swallowed a dictionary. Listen to this:

'Indeed, Third Strike’s complex techniques conspire to make the game the deepest contemporary 2D fighter yet created, and their comprehensive nature has perhaps been one of the factors in Capcom’s reticence to yet announce a Street Fighter IV. Other than the aforementioned cosmetic refinements, perhaps there is little that a sequel could do to improve on this narrow perfection, at least without changing the very rules and framework that makes Street Fighter the king of fighters.'

That just reminds me of that episode of Friends where Joey gets hold of a thesaurus and just replaces every word he's written with an arbitrarily-selected synonym without any regard for the incongruous extra connotations those words carry (I wrote that without using a thesaurus once, suck my dick EDGE).
