so, manhunt 2 got an AO rating, on top of being banned in england.

so what does this mean?

a nice remidner that games are neither art nor even a medium, but a consumer product, controlled entirely by platform holders?

the ESRB is a joke and must die?

ultraviolent motion-controlled murder-fests like MH2 shouldnt even exist in the first place?

im very angry?

even if rockstar had the balls to go on uncensored and release an AO version, it would have to be ps2 only, as nintendo simply does not allow AO titles on their systems.

eck.
its all politics, i tells ya.

See, I don't know if it's a bad thing. I guess we'll see in the end, but when asked if the game would be delayed, Rockstar said, "That's the last thing we want, but it's too early to say." I'm thinking they're probably trying to figure out whether it would be more cost-effective to censor the game and resubmit it or make a deal with GameStop to make it an exclusive. Seems to me like if the stars align the game may end up actually being released with an AO rating, potentially paving the way for more games that might not feel a big pressure to censor themselves.

This would be a good thing. I might even buy it if they decide to do this. But if what you about Nintendo is true (which I doubt, considering they had the only version of BMXXX to show titties), that could throw a wrench into this whole thing.

Are adults really a significant part of Rockstar's target audience for any of their games? Don't they just have to calculate whether enough kids will still be able to get their hands on the game with an AO rating if some retailers or platforms refuse it? I imagine that the rating and the banning will do more for sales than any type of intentional marketing could.

well now both sony and nintendo are saying they wont allow AO titles on their systems.
so it looks like an inevitable edit for both platforms.

oh well.

Most chain retailers already have a "no AO-rated games" policy as well.

EB/GS will carry it. Especially if it's a video game for a US system. Especially if it's going to sell well. Especially if other retailers won't carry it. ID's will be checked and life will go on.

It's not banned as such... they're just not rating it.

It's illegal to sell unrated games (and films), but not to own them.

I think that's how it works, anyway.

"Works".

Side note:

Rockstar finally had the balls to step up and defend one of their games. In the process they called it "fine art". Just about every media outlet ever has reported this by now. Either way, I'm happy no matter what happens.

Also, I will buy this game for no other reason than to support Rockstar for finally stepping to the plate and accepting the position that they have been handed as a sort of face of vidoegame developers in the media.
