I know. As I was typing that, I was thinking an actual puzzle game about straightening shelves and drawers would be pretty fantastic.

Meteos is interesting. I don't know that there's really a lot to it, but that business with keeping the playfield airborne is kind of neat. However well I played, I never seemed to get past about five minutes.

It's almost like an inversion of the falling block puzzle. With the blocks... commoditized, sort of like Mars Matrix crossed with Smash Bros. I guess it's more clever than it is fun?

Lumines really does come down to automatic, subconscious mathematical processing. Fitting blocks together, to music -- and music, likewise, affects the subconscious pretty directly. Lumines is meditation. If you don't get it, you don't get it, I guess. From my own experience, I really don't understand how someone could like Tetris and not like Lumines even more.

Also Meteos rules; fuck tha haters etc.

Would rather sort my STALKER inventory than play any of the puzzle games OTP.

Except Dr. Mario, that game is TIGHT. I also actually really like Baku Baku.

So you're saying it's basically videogame rock gardening? Not about achieving or exploring anything so much as arranging the simplest stuff possible on some low level and tuning out?

A puzzle game that defies rational thought, with all the associated challenges and goals, and operates on pure instinct, on the rough shape of playing a videogame (with rough shapes)?

Design-wise, there's a real innate procedural elegance to Tetris that ain't in Lumines, from what I've played of it. Again, assuming I just haven't missed something obvious. It would take a while to get into, though...

More or less. Although, I think there's achievement involved, because, you know, it is actually a challenging game. But yeah, now that I think about it, the fact that when you 'beat' Lumines, it just loops right back to the start, is in keeping with the idea that the game is more about achieving a mental state than achieving a goal.

Quote:

Tetris does have that elegance, and that's why I love it -- it's a 'zone' game; it's sort of like meditation, when you get into it. And that's a reason I love Lumines even more: It's more mathematically perfect than Tetris; more like a process of nature or physics, so it connects (with the music and graphics helping it) with the subconscious more effectively.

You know Tetris 'cheats'? You know how it always seems like you get too many Z-blocks and S-blocks and not enough I-blocks? Well that's actually the case! I read that somewhere, at least. The blocks aren't totally random; the game is less 'pure'. Lumines doesn't do that, and I think that's part of what makes it more beautiful.

From what I understand, different versions of Tetris have different block probabilities. In fact, there's a version of Tetris that specifically analyzes your current game and gives you the worst possible block.

Found it, it's called Bastard Tetris (or Bastet).

And a Mac to play it on.

WiiWare game. You can upload the minigames you made in Made in Ore to your Wii and play them on the big screen with friends.

Yes, Quite Soulless is totally amazing. The license agreement is this weird rambling nonsense about buying atlases on eBay and how an Autodesk representative called him insane once and how the Russian government tortured him. The back of the box says "I am not insane" in big yellow letters! And the demo is mostly poorly-paced incoherent cutscenes.

If I thought TGQ#9 might someday happen you can bet that I would be interviewing this guy.

EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW OF UPCOMING PCPOWERPLAY CONTENT:

Quote:
Jeremy Penner believes anyone can make a game. Not always a great game, but a game nonetheless. To prove this, he set up glorioustrainwrecks.com, which (among other things) runs a monthly two hour game design exercise called Klik of the Month Klub, with Klik & Play as the tool of choice. The resulting games are then released to the public and while most are indeed train wrecks, they have what Penner believes is most important; spirit. Critically, the quality of each game varies widely, but all are hilarious and entertaining in their own way. Anyone can join in the game creation; visit the site for more details.

9 is already done though! You'd have to put it in a theoretical #10 (due in 2011).

Congrats on the pimpage by Cycle btw!

Hell If I know, I get confused with which thing goes in each issue constantly. I'll find out later. Anyway, it's just the little bit of extra space I get in my freeware section. I got tired of relating it to the games I picked (had to stretch it quite far sometimes) so instead I'm using it to promote freeware and indie community events and what have you. We'll see how it goes!

A new Quake 3 engine-powered game came out at the start of the month but I only just came across it now. It's Iron Grip: Warlord and from the trailer and screenshots it looks like ripping good fun. There's a demo up so we can all see just how much ripping good fun it is.

Maybe this is something that should go on the disc for the next PCPowerplay Cycle, if it's not too late for that.

The timing of the KotMK is actually carefully designed to accommodate Australians! I believe it starts between 9 and 11am, depending on where in Australia you are. Maybe there's a bigger spread depending on how daylight savings time works out. Now that I actually look into it a little bit, Australia's time zones are kind of a clusterfuck.

I'll have to get that, I think. Even if I'll never boot into windows to play it.

edit: Actually, no, nevermind. Judging by their responses to legitimate criticism on yakyak.org, they haven't learned any humility after last time. I'm not going to keep propping up the branch they're sawing through themselves.

I guess I kind of overreacted to something in the SGPC release thread. Leftfield image not withstanding, these guys need some sort of crash course in customer relations, alternatively should get someone else to handle it _completely_.

Hint: belittling their problems is not good customer support.

That said, it seemed they've since come to their senses and fixed some minor bugs people had problems with.

My main problem still stands though: It's far more bothersome to reboot my mac into windows than switch on my 360 if I want to play something, and the PC release doesn't seem to offer anything substantially new (yet). Not sure when/if I'll get around to getting it.

It's in the new one with Deus Ex 3 on the cover, one and a half paragraphs to the left of Live Of D Duck 2 in the Catch Of the Month section on the bottom of page #18. It should be easy to find, being so specific my directions.

Also Deus Ex 3 has some really nice concept artwork.

Yah, it's in the latest issue, as Rero described. I don't know how many visitors it will get you, since I have no idea how many people actually read my little section about freeware games. But it's in there!

All the Deus Ex 3 stuff has been all over the internet already for like three months Sad

Man, these forums are quiet these days, huh?

I got an email pointing me to this mobile games site here, one of those mass emails that pretends to be personal, calling me 'mate' and saying it saw me on a games dev. forum. Anyway, I checked out the link:

http://www.mominis.com/gamecast1/enter.php?af=101&sr=10

I just wondered if anyone knew the deal with these things. Is this common, one among a million others, or what? It claims to be a development engine similar to Game Maker but exclusively for mobile games.

I got that email too! I was hoping it was because I ran Glorious Trainwrecks, but I guess not.

I haven't seen much in the way of non-technical game dev tools for handheld platforms, which makes this interesting, but I don't think the games it produces run on my phone, which kind of makes it much less interesting.
