So, like, I got this game for my birthday (thanks wes!) and since FFV still has me really pissed off I decided to move on.

Well, I just got to where I need to to pull off the "blitz" technique and it tells me to input: <-, ->, <-, then press A to execute.

WHEN IN GODS NAME DO YOU DO THIS? I can't execute it so I assume I'm inputing it at the wrong time. The damn game repeats the instructions three times (literally) when you fail to do it but fails to tell you the timing.

This is stupid. I tried the whole section from the last save point (with too damn high of an encounter rate) three times over about an hour of time and failed every single time. I shut the micro off rather than throw it through a window.

If I remember correctly, you select the blitz from the menu and immediately after that press the sequence. I got it working in an SNES emulator on a keyboard, surely you can do it with a real game controller.

The first time I played the game Sabin kept saying, "DUDE, MAN, I SURE WISH I COULD USE A BLITZ!" and then I looked in the game manual, inputted my first Blitz, and nothing.

After I died because I didn't kill Vargas in time, I retried for a second time. This time I just chose FIGHT a lot and didn't bother using my Blitz until Sabin was like, "Look, push BLITZ, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, got it? LEFT RIGHT LEFT".

And it totally worked that second time.

(It's actually really easy to input the blitz. I mean. It's left - right - left. It's this fight in particular where the blitz is retarded)

Yeah, that part is a pain in the ass, but it's a piece of cake to do blitzes throughout the rest of the game. Pretty bewildering.

Enter each command separately. Always do the motion first. When done push A. Final Fantasy rewards accuracy, not speed.

Don't try to do it in one smooth motion like a Street Fighter move. Only the Aurabolt, Fire Dance, Air Blade, and Bum Rush require it since those inputs use diagonals.

Move pointer to Blitz
Push A (pointer points at Sabin)
Tap Left
Tap Right
Tap Left
Push A to end the move

Always press A after you are done entering the command. Don't push A as you are finishing the move like Ryu's Fireball. Tap in the command Mortal Kombat style.

OHHHH

so like, you don't do this while he's attacking, but before you even confirm it?

wow.

Right. The game only cares about the command itself. Which in this case is "Left Right Left". No matter which way your facing! The command doesn't reverse the input command, even if attacked from behind! That part took awhile for me to get used to.

All the A button does for Blitz attacks is initiate (fingers points to Sabin) and confirm (done after inputting the Blitz command).

That's why when you look at the Blitz commands in the Status menu it only shows the motion to perform it. That's all the game cares about you performing. A is just your standard RPG "Do" button. It doesn't need to be treated like a "Punch", it just tells the game you are done entering the Blitz command when pushed after doing the motion.

It's easier to grasp the input scheme with the Suplex Blitz since there's no way you can perform that in one smooth movement.
Push A (Finger to Sabin)
Tap R
Tap L
Tap Down
Tap Up
Push A (To end the move)

You figure the rhythm to do the Suplex and you can apply that same rhythm to all the Blitz attacks.

Oh yeah, I remember that, how the game said you needed diagonals but for a D,DR,R sequence you could really just press D, D, R and it'd work fine.

This becomes more important later on.

Actually for the ones that require diagonals you can actually just press the same direction twice. So for aura bolt you can just do down down left and it works.

Well yeah, if you wanna cheat the system you can do that. I always wondered if that "easy blitz" was intentional. It makes Blitzes like the Air Blade stupid easy to pull off.

This is the original Air Blade motion
Up, Up-Right, Right, Down-Right, Down, Down-Left, Left
This is the "easy blitz" command
Up, Up, Right, Right, Down, Down, Left

The Bum Rush is even easier to pull off in this manner. It's normal command is
Left, Up-Left, Up, Up-Right, Right, Down-Right, Down, Down-Left, Left
Using "easy blitz" this translates to
Left, Left, Up, Up, Right, Right, Down, Down, Left

Ok, I got it on my first try last night.

God the encounter rate is so high in this game.

going back to old rpgs always kicks that feeling into high gear. you should see some of the old pc rpgs, man...the roughness. (oddly enough, some ultima titles got this down perfect teh first time, 6 and 7 come to mind. others, like the bard's tale or wasteland, did not.)

Phantasy Star II always reminds me that the encounter rate could always be worse. It gets harder and harder to go back to this game whenever I get the itch.

Those GameBoy Dragon Warriors though most certainly remain ace.

I just played this part tonight . . . somebody told me they had changed the blitzes for the GBA title . . .and they did change the names (Raging Fist I think instead of Pummel, and Meteor Drop instead of Suplex). I don't know, but I liked the old names better. "Perfect" translations aren't always the best . . .

How many power cells did I waste melting Sand Bums?
Swarms of them.
I did love the way they would jiggle their liquor bottle.

Devil's Garde (I think it was deliberately misspelled).
That was partly intentional, but getting there was crazy.
In U3 I finally started saving a few powders to travel with less harrassment.

FOT was possibly the worst ever without the patch.
Actually more annoying than the Cliff Racers in Morrowind.
