Out of curosity, what constitutes as significantly faster for this game? Everything is pretty much instant anyways. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Apparently there's no way to install X11 on Tiger without the disc, and I sent mine to my dad, so... yeah. All i've got is the SDK package.
Thanks, though! I just need to get that disc back somehow! _________________

it responds to keypresses much faster; this is weighed out by the fact that the mac keypress buffer seems slower. (i.e. holding down the arrow key takes longer and doesn't process as quickly, though i have no idea why this would be)
but yeah, it's already fast. dunno why it would move faster, though.
edit: twice now i've gotten a starting level that had no exit, no secret doors, no nothing. both times i was playing as a chaos knight (minotaur and demonspawn).

What? That's really odd, that install package from the Apple site should do it.

That download is listed for up to 10.3.9 and is version 1.0. Apparently the Tiger version is 1.1? The 1.0 installer tells me I have a later version, and the 1.1.3 updater says I don't have the right software, so yeah? _________________

Okay yeah that's pretty dumb. All the links on other sites that talk about X11 link to a page that isn't available any more. When I get home I'll try to dig out my Tiger DVD and upload the package. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

I get installation errors. I guess it needs files from the disc? The space required is 90mb, so hmm. _________________

Another silly question!
How do you zap yourself with the wand? I sometimes find a wand of might or some other benefit and wish to hit myself with it. I've yet to figure out how.

Your G4 desktop has a real video card that blows the G4 iBook out of the water. You wouldn't think this would matter, but since X11 has to run on top of Aqua in OS X it can get lagged down by a slower video card or less ram. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

Jumping on the Crawl bandwagon- the tile version really makes this so much less intimidating than all the other roguelikes out there! I still had to print out all the keyboard commands, though.
My first foray into the dungeon saw my level 2 High Elf Fighter getting killed by a mob of gnolls after ascending back to the first level to explore it fully.
This could be the start of something wonderful. |

orc conga line worked out after all (there were 22 of the fuckers, as far as i could count).
two hydras and a few hill giants, however, wore me down a few levels later.

hill dwarf fighter.
had a ring of see invisible which was nice, cause i had a floor with six unseen horrors (which, when you can see them, are total punks). the next floor had nothing but trolls and ogres.
i get the feeling the game isn't as random as it seems - i.e. as a troll there's always tons of plate armor; you never seem to get what you need, but a lot of what you cannot use in that particular class/race.
edit: my best run yet (nearly two hours) before dying of stupid:

YASD! Protip: Greed Kills
So, I decided to clear out the orcish mines. After getting lost returning to the first floor I found a shop where I bought a nice shiny +1 platemail suit of armor. After getting out of the shop and identifying the item I was suddenly swarmed by orcs.
They came from the north west. At first I removed my helmet and they came from the blackness of an unidentified area. Then I removed my cloak and they shouted and moved in. Then I removed my original armor and they were on me. With about 1/3 of my hitpoints left I read scroll of teleportation. I was so surrounded at that point that I was dead before even my next turn, let alone getting the opertunity to actually teleport.
The rankings told me that this was my best game ever.

Dude, tell me about it. That first really awesome run I had included a ton of stuff in my invintory that I just didn't get enough identify scrolls to figure them out. I could have easily made it another hour or two on that first one.
Also, Dess, that robe is exceptionally hilarious. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

i've been playing assassins. as an assassin you spend most of your time sneaking up on monsters and stabbing them before they can see you. most things will die in a single blow from this. it's wonderfully tense, though, because there's always the chance your stealth will fail when you're inches away from an opponent and it will start wailing on you.
i play naga assassins, who are one of the stealthiest races in the game because they don't produce footsteps. they're slower than most races, though, so if an enemy spots you it can be hard to run away. the idea is that you don't give your opponent time to react. if an enemy spots you before you can get close you're given a blowgun and poison darts, but nagas can spit poison, which is good at both short and close range. they're immune to poison too, and, as an added bonus, see invisible. _________________

I've been playing demonspawn chaos knights, just for the sheer shits and giggles of it. I've been having ridiculously bad luck in terms of starting situations, so I'm going through characters like nobody's business.
Some recent examples:
- I appear on level one in the middle of the room with 4 monsters also in the room, each in a different cardinal direction. They gang up on me and I die.
- I appear on level one and go around a corner only to run into a gnoll with a flail, who takes off all except 2 of my HP. I turn to run away and run into another gnoll. I die.
- On level two, with only my original food ration, I'm attacked by a monster that makes me hungry when it hits me. After eating my ration, I finally kill the monster, only I'm starving and at low HP. An orc then runs into the room as I'm attempting to rest, I kill him and he leaves a corpse for me to eat. Which poisons me. I die. |

so what are the elven halls?
i just wiped out the orc mines. i have the bestest axe ever (+6,+6 and makes me stealthy at the cost of 3 int, which for a warrior is ok so long as i run away from statues...right?)
edit: oh, the elven halls are where i die. gotcha.
it's basically impossible to win this game as a straight fighter, right? _________________

15 minute roguelikes are for wussies (Toups) and people who actually know what they're doing (Dessgeega).
For everyone else, there's the 15 second roguelike, Berserk.
I think getting past Day 5 is impossible. Hell, getting past Day 2 is impossible unless you have points into Dexterity. |

You are not the only one. It is why every hardcore roguelike has turned me off until this one.
I need pretty pixels since television has rotted away my imagination. |

Yeah, I'm with you two. Even durring the time of heavy ASCII art in PC games I was only playing the ones which used graphics (even really poor graphics). Though, when I was a kid I did program a ascii game onto my apple ][.
Also, dhex, about the elven halls: I would recommend clearing out the Orcish Mines then attempting to take on the halls. I need to get some more time to play, but so far the few times I have made it out of the mines and then past level 10 I have yet to make it past level 11 without some kind of crazy luck (demonic chaos knight of xom). I'm thinking that a fighter just needs to kill everything he can for as long as he can.
Yup, level grinding. If I am still having some problems getting past level 11 or so I may try some other characters, or just reading more spoilers. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I like that dhex's best character is exactly the same as my best character in this game. An axe wielding Mountain Dwarf.
I've yet to finish the Orc Mines, however. Do you guys just go straight in there or do you level up to a particular level before you try to go in there and fight it? My best effort at hacking away has been to lure them towards the stairs and try to slay them one at a time by going up and down and drawing the enemies out.
I lose to the army of Wizards that always seem to be sitting in the first room of the (very open spaced)) mines since they can cast something before I can even march and slay any of them.
I've tried worshipping other Gods to see if I can satisfy any requirements for aid, but no matter how much I sacrifice and pray to the Gods, they always remain neutral. Except for Xom, he is generally very kind to me on the big runs (obviously). |

I am all for command lines and ascii, but with something as complex as crawl I have enough trouble remembering what the key to dissect a corpse is, let alone if that @ coming my way is an enemy or an item. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

being able to instantly know an imp picked up a spear, etc, is tremendously helpful.
i wish someone would make tiles for the doom roguelike. that seems like fun. _________________

zog bless derek yu.
cause the concept is awesome, but i can't wrap my head around ascii. shoulda never done so badly in algebra.
edit: i really get the feeling dungeon crawl hates me sometimes. roll a new character, step down a corridor right after starting and bam, four gnolls. _________________
