I don't think so, by the time I got back from consumerism the Cultural Revolution was already halfway through lynching the literati and forging the New Society

Tollmaster and Rud13. I'm going to write one of these about each of you. But I think I need to sleep first, I hope you don't mind, but I've been staying up way too late already. I have things to do in the morning!

I miss the black and purple and grey.

I'm glad mostly everyone's over here now, though. If things get too cramped we can find a new home, maybe...? If internisus opened some forums I'd totally join. I sometimes think most of you are not terribly fond of me, but I like you all nonetheless.

I wonder about what really went down last night, though. I can't really believe that the IC guys brought in someone like icyclam without knowing exactly what they were doing. They're a little too clever for that, I think. My feeling — and I could be way, way wrong — is that icyclam was brought in as some kind of attack dog/destroying angel to cleanse the forum of its "undesirables". I mean, this stuff about him being "an evil force that was sealed away long ago" is really entertaining.

IC staff: "Yes, let us summon him . . ."
IC staff: "Yes, him . . ."
IC staff: "Initiate FINAL FORUM FANTASY."
IC staff: "A purge!"

"...locked."

I miss the Doctor Who Thread already. I want the old IC back but that's just wishful thinking. Maybe we can salvage something from this. I wasn't too active at ic in a posting sense but I watched it for almost 3 years I think. I will miss the people most of all. I can understand why Brandon might have wanted his forum a certain way but I guess I keep thinking that it didn't really belong to him exclusively anymore, it kind of belonged to everyone.

Stol, I already have you on my friends list on Live, we should play GoW sometime this week.

icyclam, that kind of just flew over your head didn't it?

I was trying to point out how one of my main reasons for thinking you not a very smart man is the way you always seem to fall back on a deference to authority, such as your bit about Recap on the frontpage, or when you posted about your degrees the other day, or the bit ajutla mentioned about how you always called him a 16 year-old in argumetns, etc. etc., and so really, if we want to use authority as the brunt of our arguments, then I'm pretty sure I would win.

So, if you wanted to maintain your stance on the validity of authority, then you should probably just acknowledge that I'm a smarter person than you!

Of course, you don't think that's true, do you?

Which would demonstrate a big flaw in your kind of reasoning, wouldn't it?

So, either way...

The point is: I don't agree with that sentiment. I think some 12 year-old pothead kid in a hick town somewhere in the US, can have just as valid a point as anyone else. The way that you degrade people for posting in the forums while glorifying someone for being on the front page is exactly the sort of thing which drops my opinion of you. It is just... lame.

Well his Alcatraz comment was an example of owning a community. Here's another one, slave plantations.

As for greek prisons, there's this.

Okay I lied a little and haven't gone to bed yet...

Well, uuh, you see... I'm not really expecting to post all that much here once this all blows over. Though, maybe once in a while I'll post one of my videogame-related posts if my preferred venue for those (IC) doesn't reappear...

Though, without IC, maybe I won't have any videogame posts to post? Most of my posts were always in response to something, and seeing as this forum doesn't have quite the same sorts of posts, well, will there be anything that inspires me to respond? I wonder!

Okay! Going to bed for real now!

The original deadline was Nov. 15, though since it got pushed back I'd say it's probably somewhere around the 1st of December. Just try to get everything in by the end of the month and you'll probably be fine.

I can't tell if that was related or not. But Captain EO trolled a thread, and Aderack removed the posts. EO then called Aderack out and Aderack removed those and requested he get temp banned. DJ did so and made a thread in the Axe at that exact moment all of our mod powers were revoked.

One of the most depressing things about this all is that, now that the excitement and the tension and the outrage are all dying down, I can actually calmly and intelligently think about the problem of changing and improving the forums to better fit the owner's ideas of how things should work. I still have the delusional notion that when I wake up in the morning, everything will be back in a way that we can just start implementing small fixes and tweaks to the system.

One of my ideas that came too late: another game board.

At face value, such a proposal seems quite undesirable. More than once, posters at the forums made known their desire to keep the number of boards down, and I completely understand the reasoning behind that desire (although I've kind of gotten over the notion of having a lot of boards, after surviving the addition of individual game boards at GameFAQs while I was a regular forum member there. I had a harder time getting over italics and bold, actually....)

But I believe that a new board could actually help matters a lot. It could be a simple, polite affair, filled with topics that Insert Credit "the site' is concerned with - discussions about Cave shooters, links to doujin author homepages, reviews of visual novels, and so on. New posters would be invited to visit and post there before looking at any of the other boards. It could be called something like "The Insert Credit Forum", with the subtitle of "All else is an illusion"...or something like that (sorry)

(actually, the board names and subtitles might be part of what's offputting to new users, but I would personally never change them)

The forum could have a topic about what is on the frontpage, to contain the conversations too intricate and detailed to carry out in the frontpage comments sections. Actually, if the posting of news picks up, it might be better to make topics on a once every one or two weeks basis...you know, something along the lines of "Insert Credit Frontpage: 11/13/06-11/27/06". This would probably make conversations a bit easier to follow in the long run.

If the board software allows for it, I think it would be great if you could put a divider between this new forum/the article feedback forum and the "regular" forums. Another nice thing to have if the software allows would be a notice in that divider, along the lines of:

NOTE: The following forums are for the use of longtime regular posters who wish to discuss things not normally covered by Insert Credit. You are welcome to post here as well, but it is suggested that before you do so, you lurk awhile in order to get a good impression of the flow and social dynamic.

Actually, it'd be great if there was a notice like that before the new forum as well - something like this:

Welcome to the Insert Credit forums! You are invited to visit and post on our message board to talk about news on the frontpage or things like doujin software, obscure Japanese games, or anything else Insert Credit covers. We appreciate all information and opinions you contribute as long as you are polite and thoughtful.

Hmm.....I'm not very good at writing these, so they probably sound quite condescending...

(Along the same lines, if Forum Axe were to be part of the boards, something along these lines would appear to registered users above the board:

WARNING: Forum Axe has a very different tone than the other forums, and posters should be prepared for unusual (and personal) discussions, countless nonsequiters and content that is quite possibly not safe for work. Enter with an open mind and a free spirit.

Wishful thinking, huh?)

Anyways, in order to sort out questions of what belongs where, there could be a topic on this that states stuff like "Final Fantasy goes in Real Bout, Arcana Heart goes here". Or perhaps a seperate page of suggested guidelines for where topics should go could be linked to in the notice above the forums. Although...there might be ongoing debate on the subject, so it might be best to leave an open topic for people to ask "where does this go?"

I realize the risk that this new forum might invite a certain amount of "LOL JAPPOGAYWANKERS" attitude in certain posters, but leaving a firmly worded announcement on the regular forums about "how things are going to be" for a few weeks might help stop that kind of thing from going too far.

Naturally, this is all a day late and a dollar short (or whatever), but once I get ideas like this in my head I have to let them out or they fester. Sorry.

...

Man, I really miss the forums.

Working on my GSW column eye tee tea

I'm really really pissed off by the weekend's events - IC was an absolutely lovely place to hang out, and while people (not least of all me) needed to smell the coffee, the way it was done was utterly-cack handed and counterproductive.

What pissed me off firstly was that Captain EO was banned on what seems to amount to Eric-Jon Waugh's whim - I've been giving the guy some credit after glowing post-TGS reports, and those events prove that credit to be utterly misplaced. From the Dr Who sticky that nobody else used to Castlevania to KOF to LOTR, the guy is way too precious about his fandoms for executive power to rest in his hands. This kind of ties in with my second and third points.

Then there's the Recap situation - the guy's attitude was as culperable for his beatdown as anyone who was calling him a moron. Brandon seemed to ignore that the guy was acting like a condescending, fanboyish tool and ignoring the informed opinions of people who actually work with code. Can the language barrier explain that? I don't think it can, since he seemed to have a grasp of what the concepts at hand were. If IC staffers are going to act in antisocial ways, they're going to deserve getting it in the neck as badly as anyone else.

Now, icyclam. The gossip is that Tim and Aderack leaned on Brandon to have him installed for the sake of their own egos, and it certainly seems plausable given the attitudes they expressed. I'm sorry Toups, but the reception that guy got does not justify his actions. I was tempted to log in and tell you to fuck off and stop being such a fucking apologist, but I've cooled off some. Anyone who's going to moderate needs to be cool-headed and have a thick skin as well as being sane, and icyclam is a complete headcase. He had an agenda, he's had an agenda for months, and he was enacting that agenda. It's frustrating to see people give the guy any slack - he's an egotist and a bigot with a touch of the megalomania, and I can only assume this was 108 and Aderack's payback for not being the stars of the show anymore. Thanks, guys.

IC needed the mods trimming down and the people with emotional issues taken off the board, but Toups and Deusjester would have been fine. Instead we got a pincer movement of a maniac and the 4chan raid he quite possibly stirred up and now Brandon might be up the shit because someone posted child porn. Icy finally got his wish and now I'm out of an internet home. Depressed aye ti ti

I would like to state now that even if Brandon doesn't bring the forums back up, I am not ready to admit the death of the insert credit forums. At the very least I am hoping to have the forum data moved to a different server (that I will pay for myself, if I have to). They would have a different name but at least we could pick back up where we left off. Anyway this is all just speculation at this point, but once the dust has fully settled and I know brandon's position I'm going to start an official "where do we go from here" thread where we discuss possible alternatives for the future of IC. Whether or not Brandon liked them, the IC forums were a great, one-of-kind place on the internet and I'm not going to let that go away.

Thank you Toups.

Rud13, you have shaped your own life in a way that I am slightly in awe of. I don't think that I could learn another language and move to another country simply because I liked the writings of another person who had done similarly. I wish that I could though, because it sounds like a very good way to live. You seem to be a bit insecure about a few things, and I think that you shouldn't be. You're a good, funny guy with a good grip on fashion. If I ever come to Tokyo, I'd like to hang out if that's not something you'd mind.

James, you're a good guy to talk to on the internet, and although you can get a bit heated about issues you care about, it's always obvious that you do so because you, well, because you really care about them. I'd quite like it if you followed the path of the IC forums migration, and I will be following your Gamesetwatch column, wether you send me drafts or not.

I also really like the fact that you have a pimp limp! Those are incredibly classy!

I've always liked the Insert Credit frontpage, but even considering all of their problems, the forums were significantly better than the main site. For a long time, It hasn't seemed like anyone gave much of a shit about making real features for the site proper.

Seriously.

If you want more connection between the forums and the main site, maybe you should consider mkaing the main site actually good?

I mean, it is okay, I read it once in a while, but it isn't all that great.

Usually when there was something really interesting on the main site someone would link to it in Real Bout anyway... so...

Which is why I still think cross-linking posts between the main site and Real Bout would have been an easy fix for that particular issue. My feeling is that such a system would have improved the quality of the main site by providing feedback, and also improved the quality of the forums by providing more input

If anyone had ever told me how much of an issue it was, and opened up a discussion for it, maybe we could have tried that!

Of course, obviously, exploding the forums and pissing everyone off was a much more logical solution than actually saying what your problems were and asking for input -- though maybe that would have damanged too many egos? I guess we can't have that.

Second of all, I suppose people wanted a more efficient environment with less spam, and more on topic, focused posts, but you know... that's just not going to happen. When communities grow large and popular, they naturally become less efficient, but they produce more and better stuff (which the forums were doing). I mean, if all you want is a more civil environment, then the trick is to make your forums shitty, unpopular, and unproductive -- I suppose we're on the path to that!

Perhaps you can just open up an invite-only IRC channel called #icforums and only invite the staff, plus icyclam? Now there's a fine idea!

And he came riding on his noble steed, magic staff in hand, the ashes of Rome burning in the background, the people scattered across the land, prepared to open up the sky and rain down the final hellfire that would destroy this world once and for all -- this place known only as "Internet" -- and he was called "Legal Step", but that was only his short name, for his true name was much too long to speak in the time this world had left (also for the profile name size limit).

Well, it's a really, really well made videogame, for what it's worth. I'd even let you play as the mexican with the intelligent voice.

Other than that there's also doom and contra or maybe uno? Do you like to get your uno on glitch?

Also rud13 we already have boojiboy, and I think donmarco posts here anyway?

Maybe we should be making a Gears of War thread? I haven't been able to play because both of my roommate's controllers were broken, but the wired one just started working again so I hope you guys are still online every night.

Well, I mailed Toups offering to host his backups once I pay off Super-Combo's hosting bill, but we're certainly not a homogeneous group, just a circumstantial spike in new signups. Provided Jeff doesn't turn this forum into a horrible shitfest I'm going to stay around, because I've found all this strangely refreshing.

Yeah, this is exactly why I am offering my hosting. It's not going to much other use, there is already a forum there (which is now nicely cleaned up and ready to rock) and the chance of me getting bent out of shape over Axe-antics is pretty much nil.

I don't want to post the URL yet, in case the people are working something out. I will if given the greenlight though!

Hey everyone! How's it going? How was everyone's weekend?

Mine? Busy. A mix of turky, Wii, and strippers. Hence why I wasn't online at all this past weekend and missed... everything.

I got an IM from James earlier in the afternoon referring to the drama, and I knew the IC forums were down, but I simply figured the server was overloaded or something... no biggie, just a tech issue. But he pointed me toward this thread and.... wow.

After about five confusing pages, I decided to ask Rudie, dmauro, and Isfet for elaboration, and I guess I have it....

this whole thing is easily a chapter in a book about online communities.

I think I mentioned to dhex before that I actually do plan on writing an entire book on such a topic, and this whole episode is easily a nice fat one.

But anyway, I haven't read all 15 (!) pages, so excuse this post, but I just wanted to say something before it was... I dunno.... too late?

I will miss the IC forums. I hate to see it go... it had become easily my favorite place to hang out. I've made some real friends there (dhex, Isfet, dmauro, Wilkes) and some.... "enemies" seems too strong a word (and they know who they are). I loved the people and personalities, even if some of the opinions expressed, and those expressing them, got on my nerves or made my eyes roll.

But at the same time, as mentioned earlier, perhaps its time has come? And I hate to admit this, but I found myself spending perhaps a bit too much time there, so now I have an excuse to get more stuff done in a day. Also, and you guys have to admit... what better way for a forum to go down then the main bad guy coming and taking control, all mad with power, then to have some invasion pick the carcass apart?

Anyway, now that its history.... let it stay that way. I personally don't want it to return, because it might not be the same (though I get the sense that it's part of the plan for things to be different).

Hence why I was thinking... what I'll miss the most is the Axe. So I asked dmauro what he thought about me staring it up again over at my site, and he seemed game. And I bet it could be fun.... though I'm curious what others think. Afterall, what made it what it was were the people. Or would it even be worth the bother? Anyway....

The IC foums is dead, long live the IC forums.

Again, sorry if its been said before, since I haven't checked all 15 pages.

Do we strictly need a temp forum? Everyone's grills seem pretty chilled over hear and nobody's starting shit - I worry if Insert Credit comes back so will the tiresome old shit wars. It's kinda chilled over here. The forum theme is also growing on me.

As far as I'm concerned the TGQ forums are the temp forums until we find a more permanent solution. I mean they are already the de facto halfway house for displaced ICer's.

Yeah, the dust needs to settle a bit more over all this before we decide how to move on. I think we all need a bit of time to depressurize anyway.

Fortninety, I'd like to ask you to hold back on starting your own little forum axe until we know more about the future of IC. I mean I can't stop you, but on the other hand I do believe that forum axe would've just been a lame hell rip-off had it not existed in the context of the rest of the IC board. I don't think a standalone forum axe would be the same at all. Just my 2 cents.

Damn, that's like 5 hours away. Uhm... let me talk to the wife. I don't know my plans or my work schedule for that time yet. It's possible though!

Sadly nothing of the sort. I was walking to clas after grabbing a Reuben downtown, and right in front of the Greyhound station on Chester, I apparently screamed out really loud and fell down and started twiching and shouting. I, of course, remember none of this. To me, it seemd like I was in the real world, and suddnely fell into a nightmare world with an ambulance and some guys yelling at me to keep my oxygen mask on.

Yeah, weird shit. My family thinks it was stress (lots of fucked up shit happened this past summer) but i ahven't gotten any tests done yet. I should be getting those done over christmas break. Woo Hoo!
