These are my choices:
-hardtype
-onecoin
-becausevideogames
-selectbutton
Instead of saying why you want a certain name, I am only interested in hearing your complaints about the existing names. Let this be a trial by fire. Whichever one I feel has the least amount of convincing reasons NOT to use it, I will use. If anyone is seriously unhappy with any of these names let me know in this thread. I will decide the final name tonight after work.
I am currently not considering anything else. If you must make more suggestions, do so via PM, and I will periodically update this post with new suggestions. I'd like to keep this discussion focused on simple arguments (try to keep the bickering and lol axe stuff to either of the other two IC fallout threads, if that's alright), so it's easier for me to read and make a good decision.
Thanks! _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

hardtype is too edgy, onecoin is just so boring and nonsensical, selectbutton just does not sound cool, and becausevideogames is good but maybe a little long and not so catchy. |

I don't like onecoin.com/onecoin.net because it's not available.
becausevideogames.com is unavailable, but .net is.
hardtype.com is available.
Apparently Tim already has selectbutton.net, so we're good to go there.

One Coin is ultimately a weak name. It's quiet. While it does go along with names like The Gamer's Quarter and Insert Credit, it's nowhere near as powerful as either of them. I wouldn't be really upset if it was chosen, but I feel we have better options.
Becausevideogames is strong. However it also points that the only thing we talk about or think about is video games. Which as we very often talk about other stuff and the like it's a bit limiting. Again it is long, and I think deciding between video games and videogames and making it consistent could cause more strife than needed.
Select Button is also a bit weak to me. Again, it seems to have to much of a video game reference going on. It is bland. No one particularly pays attention to what the select button does, it's never the first option. I'm going to echo James's earlier sentiment when I say that I don't exactly like the idea of Tim naming it (No offense.)
And I'll say that Hard Type as a video game reference didn't strike me till I heard it explained to me. It just punched.
EDIT: made my last point make sense. _________________

I really like BecauseVideoGames. Granted, my slow, Middle-of-Nowhere, TX dial-up connection will prevent me from using the forums as much as everyone else, but I remember in another thread someone said something about it becoming a really nice injoke (something like BecauseVideoGames ate your mother or something like that).
Hardtype sounds way too edgy and generic, Onecoin sounds really similar to Insert Credit, and if that's what you're going for than that might work but a better name would be something like Freeplay, and if Tim's already got selectbutton.net that one needs to be seriously considered even though it sounds very generic and almost boring. |

Rud13 already registered it for us.
- onecoin feels unrelated to anything that I do or say.
- hardtype sounds like we're taking ourselves way too seriously and getting boners over our pretentious yattering.
- selectbutton, the sequel to dontpressstart |

No one liked the idea of an onomatopoeic name? I think it could be fun and effective.
Other than that, I agree with hott stott on all counts, and heylisten.com is still the best....there were some other good names in the other thread, but I'll have to go back and look through it when I'm off work _________________ Straight up

I still say that the "main name" does not have to be its main domain. If we already have selectbutton and becausevideogames, those can be the first domains that go into the randomization pool. The name we refer to the community as does not have to be something that we own. |

I wouldn't visit heylisten. I don't like the idea of a very direct, VERY obvious, very popular reference to Zelda being the name of a site not about zelda (one that will probably regularly bash it.) Hey Listen, home of Forum Axe, just sounds wrong and dirty on a concept level. _________________

hardtype: I like the FF reference, not so much what it tries to say about the community; and it makes me think of TDS - I mean, the hardgay guy.
onecoin: not strong, the injoke is too obscure and it's not related to videogames per se. It's not one-crediting.

hardtype makes no sense to me because I didn't read the other thread where it was coined. onecoin and becausevideogames wouldn't make any sense to me if I hadn't been present in the overall community when they were relevant. selectbutton is the best of the bunch, but that's not really saying a lot. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

I'm sort of with you because it's a Zelda reference, but the name is also picking on Zelda, so it almost works, but yeah, Zelda reference for a name is probably a bad idea no matter how you cut it. |

I'm not aware of the relevance or meaning of that particular catchphrase sorry.
I think it'd be best to just stay away from catchphrases. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

I don't really like any of these names, but I guess my favorite would be SelectButton. I really wish we went with selectbuttons instead. I think it somehow sounds less bland, and the "s" lets it roll to a stop. Selectbutton stops too blunt and it sounds like its referencing the actually button on a controller. Oh well.
OneCoin doesn't have a good ring to it. I liked it for about five minutes after Rud13 told the story behind it but now that the context has faded from my mind its gone back to sounding lame.
HardType is almost good but it really sounds like a boner reference.
BecauseVideoGames is too long and artsy. Using "because" like that makes it sound too pretentious and I think is way too specific for its own good. But I guess its probably my second choice after selectbutton. |

onecoin is too in-jokey, which apparently people hate?
becausevideogames is too specific, which apparently makes it bad. it is, however, pretentious, so maybe that makes it good?
selectbutton is tim's idea and therefore unacceptable because then we'd just be a bunch of tim-imitating wankers amirite?
hardtype is hard, motherfucker. Yeah.

Selectbutton is weak.
Onecoin isn't as weak, but it's a bit inside jokey and doesn't say much.
Becausevideogames is long, unwieldy, and it just doesn't ring right with me.
I like hardtype; I know a lot of people don't but hardtype sounds like a real site to me; the others all sound like "we can't name it insert credit so let's name it this." |

Hi Guys. Recent former IC member chiming in.
I have to agree with those folks that say that onecoin and selectbutton are trying too hard to capture the feel of the old name.
hardtype sounds cool but says little.
becausevideogames is pretentious but is the best of the bunch methinks |

becausevideogames sounds like an edutainment publisher, not a forum. Onecoin doesn't relate to the subject matter at hand directly, and I think that's not so great. Select button is just... eh. _________________

Um. Yeah, abot that. Let's assume that some people don't read every thread ever day. And possibly never had a chance to post in that last (locked) thread. And again suppose that they thought they had to Thursday to pick/suggest a name?
ALSO! I dislike PMs. I have this idea that you'll read it, and steal the idea for yourself. Go to hollywood and become a world-famous ideaist. While I die alone and with crappy Reeboks on my feet. Possibly in Michigan.
So? I like Rud13's idea of naming the new forums after an injoke. rather than another video game reference or gaming reference.
FINALLY!

Argument against/for the name hardtype. And as someone said hardtype sounds like a real site, the others don't. |
A very good point no one has been considering:
PageRank on Google!!
The name should be something that nothing has a high PageRank for, so that we make sure to top Google searches.
Seriously.
This is an important, practical concern.

Eh. I don't really like any of those four, but hardtype strikes me as the least offensive. It appeals both to the touchy-feely "we-love-nichey-games" set and people like me who like to pontificate tersely and with foul language wherever possible.
I still like inserttoups better than anything else. |

Hardtype really strikes me as a talk about HUGE SPRITES and INSANE BOSSES kind of a place, which is alright, but I think it's not inclusive enough as to evoking everything you'd want to carry over from the old forum. Of course it's silly to say a forum name could somehow exclude certain posters or lines of discussion, but "IC + teeth" sounds vaguely unappealing. I don't think i'd ever come to be 100% happy with that name, and I don't think IC would have ever been improved by "teeth" besides. _________________

Maybe all the bad connatations with "HardType" will clear up after a few weeks, like what happened with "Wii." I mean Wii is still a dumb name but HardType is kind of cool, except for the boner connection. I was thinking it might look cooler in a banner.
BecauseVideoGames sounds like an online store.
SelectButton seems mostly okay, its just not that inspired. The select button traditionally has the least personality of any button on any controller its ever been on. |
