Blip Festival is coming! This chiptune festival boasting over thirty performers will be held over the entire weekend. Click through the link for the full details, which hopefully most of you already know. This is mostly just to remind you that if you haven't purchased a weekend pass yet, now is the time.

If you think you may or may not have an interest in chiptunes, but haven't taken the time to find out, this is a great opportunity. With the number and variety of performers, there will almost certainly be some music played this weekend that you will fall in love with.

dorkz

I have a party to go to next weekend I simply can't miss, lest I be thought a social leper. I also need to find the perfect moment to ask a certain someone to go with me, lest I be thought a social leper.

I actually really want to go to this, if only to see Nullsleep and YMCK. Unfortunately, a trip to New York during the winter is horribly unfeasible (financially and logistically) for me.

This thing is going on for FOUR DAYS. Having to go to a party is no excuse. And if you want to come, you should do your best to get up here because you can be sure you won't get this sort of opportunity again. This is the coolest chiptune thing that is going to be happening on this continent for a long time.

I just posted in my staff blog that I saw TouchBoy, the only Canadian entrant to this festival, play on Friday. I've seen him before; he's a friend of one of my friends. I didn't realize he was so entrenched in the scene.

I would love to go to Blip. All the big names will be there, it seems, and it's such a tightly-knit community, I can only imagine how much fun it would be to be in the thick of that event. There's something heart-warming about seeing a big ol' GB brick being put to good use...

If anyone's going, please blog that shit here!

I know you have at least the $50 you saved by not being able to buy Elebits, so you better be picking up a festival pass. (with $15 left for beers)

Again, it's FOUR DAYS (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) so even if you have other plans, you can probably still make it!

There are simply NO EXCUSES for not attentding. No fucking excuses. If you are in NYC, be there, at least for a part of it! And if you're not... figure a way. There's buses and trains and shit. Fuck, there's nothing more all-American than hitchhiking for chiptunes.

I think that's the coolest idea for a tattoo I've ever heard.

no they did not get cancelled, they were holding out, waiting for their contract to get a little fatter.

You never know, it might still happen.

If it happens in time, it may even end up on the bonus disc of the 8bp 50th release.

so, ten dollars a night means i'll probably go to one night at most.

sunday has ymck and bubblyfish, but i have plans sunday, and though i don't know how late they run, i'd prefer to leave them open. saturday has nullsleep, and the super mario movie, which i want to see. virt's on thursday and mark denardo's on friday, along with bitshifter.

five dollars to see 8-bit saturday afternoon sounds great, though. i've been wanting to see that.

i guess i'll see if any of my friends are interested in going with me. most of my local friends are not videogame / chiptunes people, though.

i've never been to the tank before. this place is near city hall?

It's closer to Canal Street/Chinatown, on the west side.... which itself is relatively close to City Hall, but I digress.

I'm aiming to be there thursday evening, but I'm not positive. Definitly Friday. I would like to meet a bunch of regulars in person!

This show is a chiptunes primer.

If you can only make it to one night, you should go Saturday and Sunday nights.

Yeah, there's like a billion things going on over at my end this weekend... best friend getting married, getting married for said marriage (I'm one of the groomsmen, so there's prep-work to be done), a friend coming from out of town, IGDA X-Mas party, yada. yada. Hence only the two day commitment.

I so desperately want an actual YMCK CD intead of just having mp3s.

I ended up drinking with her something like three times before I learned she was Bubblyfish, mostly because I've never seen her perform live.

how did that happen?
me and a friend ended up babbling with her for a fair while after that workshop (though it was mostly my friend who babbled cause i'm shy and he's not) and i believe she's good company and fairly cute as well. ^-^

cross post from 2A03.org:
Quote:
The space is fantastic! Not the best acoustics, but it's huge, there's a raised stage, the cool pixelated screen thing behind the performers and a projection screen above that. There's plenty of room for dancing as well has hanging back if you need to take a quick break. You can even go upstairs to the balcony that goes all around the room if you want to get a birds eye view to take some pictures or something. Unfortunately I forgot to bring a camera last night, but I don't plan on making that mistake again tonight.

Virt kicked it off last night with a great set. I believe we now have documented video footage of him fingering the keyboard with one hand and the guitar with the other. As well as pictures of him rockign out so hard that he lost his hat.

Receptors, Glomag, and Starpause all had some great Gameboy sets before x|k tore the place apart with his midines set. Goto80 followed that up with some great commodore64 tunes that kept the pace up. Nullsleep requested "Fantasy" with a tone that said "If I don't hear this song right now, there will be blood" as Goto80's last song. He had to do the female chorus himself, which was fucking awesome.

Tugboat came up next but was interrupted before he could start by a phone call from his parents (you'll have to see the video I guess). Tugboat played a tight set as usual with barely enough of a pause for applause between songs with his medley style performance.

Chibi-Tech ended the night, and as the only performer that wasn't directly controlling his music, had probably the most engaging performance. Lip-synching the "lyrics" to the songs, jumping on the table, flashing the crowd, wearing a bit of gothic loli flair, and pantomiming sex, he had the crowd going crazy.

Mike (I think that's his name) from the Tank put the weekend into perspective when at the end of the night he said "only 25 more sets to go." And it's only going to get better as more fans show up and the energy gets kicked up a bit for the weekend shows.

Hopefully we'll be seeing more of you tonight!

Virt posted a rundown of the first day:

http://virt.vgmix.com/?p=61

Also, 8bit people is releasing a compilation (and I understand, is selling it at the premises) with quite a few artists participating in the festival.

it's been going good! I left dork stove at my place so I could go to work for an hours so don't mention I'm posting ok.

you missed mark denardo. he was impressive.

and, uh, you missed Pepino and Coova. who were kind of amazing, actually.

Wait, how many asian ladies in berets does it take to form a roller derby team, and is that more or less than the number of mexican men in top hats it takes to form a roller derby team?
