Mister Toups, please, you do yourself no favors by misrepresenting the events of last night as "mob rule." If anything, the vast, vast majority of the posters were on our best behavior that night. We protested the sheer stupidity of icyclam's reign in a quite rational manner. icyclam made very bad decisions from the outset of his reign. Some posters chose to bring a bit of the Axe to general, yes, but they were few and they did it in the spirit of light-hearted resistance, not mob violence. Brandon might own the forums, but I think we're right to express our outrage at how the man who is supposed to be in charge of them made such a thoughtless gesture to change the "problems" he saw with the forums without even thinking of discussing it with the people it would effect.

Do you really, truly believe that a week of simmering anger and resentment would have resulted in a better end for all of this? If so, you should start talking to icyclam about that. It is his actions that caused the outpouring of resistance.

Anything would've been better than a 4chan invasion, man.

This is not true. Although I caught wind of the idea when it was still "no mods" instead of "icy as mod". If I had, I would have either expressed concern or congratulated him on creating an ideal situation for Message Board Apocalypse.

And even if the choice of icy was either the worst possible option or possibly the best possible option, it don't change that well, boards get the moderation that they deserve.

I wish I'd dared hit the wiki last night and saved some of my articles. I was pretty proud of The Fire Dungeon and the Ice Dungeon, as well as Unwinnable Battles and Fetch Quest. I mean, they weren't TGQ material or anything (Very Happy) but I liked them all the same. A glance at Recent Changes showed that a whole lot of changing was going on, though, so I decided it was best not to subject myself to anything potentially horrific and/or illegal.

P.S. It looks like Ollie has rolled back to a pre-defaced version of the wiki; he may have locked it, it looks like all the old content is still there.

But there wasn't really any shitty behavior going on until 4chan showed up. Balbanes was inflammatory, maybe, but he always is. The people who brought a little bit of the Axe to General did it in a lighthearted sort of way - talking about state license plates. Baron Patsy's topic spamming didn't even occur until just before the 4chan rush, and even then it wasn't really a big deal. Is some responsibility on the part of us? Yes. Is it as much as you attempt to make it seem? Heck no.

You are confusing intent with consequence. No one meant anything bad by what they did. But it doesn't change the fact that if we had just protested politely the state of mass hysteria which inspired either Icy or someone else to stage the invasion would not have happened. It was the hysteria that was responsible for it, not icy.

That's good. The wiki has some good stuff. Unlike last time there is far fewer things I would save from the hell fire of the wiki. I liked the recent Zelda threads though.

Now that emotion has subsided. I'm sorry that I lashed out at brandon so.

Also, Toups, if you told me there were all of six people who were seriously contributing to "hysteria," i'd say you padded the list. And I'm pretty sure you wouldn't even be talking about anyone who's normally a big-volume poster, either. I don't think you could conceivably connect the gentle, winker style passive (agressive?) resistance with anyone crying POLICE STATE POLICE STATE LET'S TAKE THIS PUPPY DOWN other than some thread overlap (mostly on the part of the latter).

I'm pretty sure there WERE some people crying POLICE STATE POLICE STATE actually.

And yeah, 5 or 6 (or less) is all it takes. But everyone was contributing in one way or another by the end. There is no point in naming names though. But if you were in the IRC channel at the time, "hysteria" is the only word that comes to mind. And I could see how much that was bleeding over into the forums.

Man, seriously though, what did he hate so much about the forums? The disconnect from the front page? That's because he didn't have any cross-linking between the two. Making sticky posts for each news item in Real Bout that unstickied after a week, linking the main article in the first post, and then linking the thread from the main article, would probably have fixed that. I mean, the structure of the site is what caused a lot of that cultural disconnect, not the people themselves.

I mean shit, I think most of the members of the forums found stuff on the main page interesting. I certainly did. There was just never any discussion on them!

You had a whole forum of intelligent people who would probably have been glad to make interesting posts on the sorts of topics you wanted once in a while if you had proactively fostered the right sort of channels and communications to encourage that.

You can't expect that stuff to just spontaneously develop!

So absurd...

People are assets. Having people on your forum who care about the site and actually want to contribute something should be a good thing.

No problem whatsoever, you did the right thing.

About the IC... thing... well... next time I invest time in a message board, i'll make sure to know that the owners are sane people. The way I see it, i'm looking at a bunch of trolls that ruined a rare phenomenon ... too bad they were also the legit owners of the place. It's like you're 8 years old, you enter your room and you see your little sister burning down your collection of hockey cards. All those cards hidden under your bed because you didn't want anybody to mess with them.

Well, they're gone now and there's nothing I can do.

I don't see why we can't have 4 and some variation of 1,2, and 3.

4 can be the neato php comments system on the news page, and then there can be separate forums in a layout similar to what there was before. same people, different conduct based on posting area.

Anyway, does anyone have the READ.ME and/or DJ's big thread saved? I think people are forgetting how civil the discourse there was. I said some things that I'd like to have for reference, myself.

Outside of the insert credit forums, he is by all accounts a good guy. I've talked with him in private, on his (older) forums, and on DPS, and he was always fine. He tends to get emotionally involved in things, but so do I, so I'm not going to fault him there. What's bizzare about this whole thing is that he never bothered to let IC go. That he somehow came back with a strange power play maneuver, and that he is now intent on stifiling the kind of disent and flippancy that he used to thrive on. He very much just smacks of trying to get on Brandon's good side. His axe with the IC forums seems to be a whole lot bigger than I think any of us ever thought it was. People forget that when he finally did leave, it was with zero drama.

Okay, guys, I've been gone driving back home and such.

What, er, happened? I get a 404 when accessing forums.insertcredit.com? I... don't really have the time to dig through 6 pages of posts and establish a chronology?

I assume something... exploded?

4. Exodus responds civilly, all is well.
5. A few people make some "crazy threads" and icyclam locks them. Everyone is still relatively ok.
6. Exodus mentions something about how some of the good culture from the Axe might be integrated back into General.
7. A completely harmless thread is made that had nothing to do with the state of the forums, and was not baiting in any way whatsoever.
8. icyclam closes it, tells people to discuss the state of the forum in the main thread, and bans the poster. (Steps 7 and 8 happened several times.)
9. Some polls are made about Forum Axe -- overwhelming support for the return of the old Axe is recorded.
10. icyclam makes a "Ban List" (with me on it)!
11. A whole bunch of people say, "fuck this shit."
12. Civil discussion is still ensueing somehow!
13. Guardian has been very supportive of the changes all night and makes about the most civil thread you can imagine to discuss things.
14. icyclam closes it and threatens to ban him.
15. A few people get angry.
16. icyclam bans a shitload of people.
17. A bunch of people flip out.
18. 4chan.
19. The end.

This is more or less what I recall. Except that not ALL of those threads icy locked were without reason. Some of them were quite obviously posted to bait him, some of them not.

And I'm sorry if it seems like I'm taking Brandon/Icy's side on this. I have the unfortunate problem of seeing things from multiple viewpoints so it's hard for me to pick sides. Anyway I have said I'm not interested in placing blame, but I do not like the idea of people shirking responsibility. This all being said, if I haven't already made it very clear, I think it was a terrible decision on Brandon's part to make Icy a mod and I think he reacted to having power in the worst way possible.

I grabbed those, and several others, just in case. Though the wiki appears relatively unscathed (though locked) now.
