Well, I've been eagerly anticipating Kenta Cho's latest offering ever since I realized a few weeks ago it was about time for him to put a new game out (he tends to release a new game every eight or nine months). I was pleasantly surprised to find that he had done so when I checked his site just now.

Titanion

Fixed shooter in the good old days, 'Titanion'.

Played this yesterday. One of his best, I feel initially.

kenta cho released a new game. it's similiar to gaplus.

it's not all that interesting, though. and i say this as someone who likes gallery shooters a whole bunch. i'm sure there'll be plenty of revisions in aba games's usual idiom, though.

Whoa-ho! Two posts in and already polarized opinions! There might be something to this one.

edit-Okay, after playing it, I quite like it too. I got through six phases before I realized the hook was using your second shot button to grab enemies down to your level to increase your firepower. Are there any bosses though? I got to phase twelve without encountering one.

I don't think so; I got to phase 20 without encountering any.

I'm fascinated by the column structure in the background. The blocks count up your progress like numerals.

it's a nice take on the traditional namco(t) progress icons.

the waves all feel pretty samey, though, and there doesn't seem to be any strategy to enemy recruitment other than "more bullets = better!" which is disappointing. i'm sure that will change, though.

No need to run a Titanion high score competition over at TGQ. We all know what happened to the last two. Rolling Eyes

I was hoping there'd be a bonus for clearing waves without firing a shot!

Okay, this is more like it. I like Modern Mode a lot more than Classic. Then again, bullet hell style shooting is what Cho is best at so it's a no-brainer that it'd be really fun here with this game as well.

Got as far as Phase 27 this time. I love how smooth it runs, even when the screen is bursting with activity.

That is neat, isn't it? Wanting to see how large the blocks get every five to ten phases is sort of one of the main things that keeps compelling me to play further and further each time.

i like classic mode more!

so, as i expected, the capture beam has been totally retooled.

in classic mode, you get to use it once every time a limit bar fills up. you build up the bar by shooting enemies, but the more enemies you have captured, the slower the bar builds. there's strategy now. the game is much more balanced.

in modern mode, you have a "provocation beam" instead. you can use this on the purple, galaga-looking enemies to increase their firing rate, and then finish them off while as many bullets are on the screen as possible for maximum points.

this is more like it!

I have a bunch of his games for Mac OS X somehow. I forgot where I found them, but they don't seem to be on his main site. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yeah, I am all about the multipliers in modern mode. Getting to the top of the screen to use the provocation beam on the big guys up there is pretty fun and hair-raising at times.

edit-HIgh score in Modern mode so far: 1,931,767. I would have broken two million and gotten an extra life but I took a hit and had no lives left. I was at Phase 9.

editedit-New Modern Mode high score: 3,812,099. Phase 18 or 19. Someone top me already, I'm normally not that good at these kinds of games!

Modern Mode: 4,526,080 , Phase 17

It gets pretty damn hectic the higher your score goes.
