Seriously, Japanese style gangster game? Why isn't anyone talking about this here?

I just got the game yesterday and started a game today. 12 hours later I finished it. Right now I think all I can say is a vague, "It's good." I think I need to let the whole experience settle itself in my head for a while. I don't think I fully understand it, but I'm thinking it was good for me to play it. A lot of the stuff I liked, a lot of the stuff I wasn't sure if I liked.

What I do feel more confident about is listing a bunch of games that it reminded me of. Easy list here goes:

River City Ransom
The Warriors
Snatcher
Killer 7
Old PC Hentai RPGs

I'll write more tomorrow, I promise.

Ok, Snatcher? Why Snatcher? Why must you raise my interest level? I'm broke?

Also, Warriors the Game or Warriors the Movie?

I wanted to start this thread too, but I too don't know what to say about it. I'm really enjoying Yakuza despite the fact that the feeling kind of half-assed in a lot of places. The elements by themselves are terribly shoddy, but put together it all just sort of clicks. The best analogy I can give comes directly from the game itself. The intro is indeed the video we made fun of in this thread. Despite actually using this voice acting in the game itself, when viewed during the game, the voice acting doesn't come off nearly as bad. It's certainly not the best voice acting ever, but it does a good job of creating the characters the game wants to create.

The game's just paced very well. There are as many cutscenes as in Shenmue, but unlike that monstrosity, they actually add something to either the plot or character development. There's almost too much fighting (random battles essentially), but whenever it almost starts to feel tedius, you've racked up enough money to do whatever interesting seedy activity you're interested in instead. I'm spending my extra cash trying to woo a hostess at one of the bars. She turned me down the first time, but I got a hot tip from a bum that may have just let me know what kind of girl she is.

The game definitely feels half assed in a lot of places. It also feels like they added gaming conventions for... the sake of gaming conventions.

I really liked the first couple hours. The style is really good, and the feeling of being a badass is great. It just crumbled after a while... it kinda picked itself back up, but in a totally different way. Hmm...

I think that is one of the main "problems" with most games as they stand, they rely on standard gameplay and shoehorn in a bit of story. Whereas, what many of us like is games like GTA / Dead Rising where they are based around a central experience, ie." you are a gangster who can carjack any car", so what you want to see is games that are built around the *central premise* of that game, and ties into the themes of the story.

I have little interest in Yakuza, after playing the demo: mainly because beat'em ups are my least favourite style of game, and there are apparently tons of forced encounters in the game.

Beat'em ups are your least favorite type of game? Do you hate kittens, too?

most beat'em'ups (the kind that aren't river city ransom, double dragon, little fighter 2 or advance guardian heroes) are actually pretty lame.

Ah... well, if it means anything - Yakuza's brawling mechanics are fantastic.

It's not even a skill thing that makes it enjoyable, though. It's just spectacularly lean and brutal.

Yeah, it's not so much a skill thing, although you can be skillful. It's... a good mechanic.

Also: does anyone else find it fucking awesome that some of your closest buds in the game are gigolos?

That's kind of awesome.

It's REALLY awesome that it expects you to take the little girl along to illegal gambling parlors to advance the story.

YOU TAKE A LITTLE GIRL TO A WHORE HOUSE AND SAY IT'S FOR A SOCIAL STUDIES FIELD TIRP.

I would like the game more if it was more heavy handed on its ridiculousness...

The fact that it reminded you of River City Ransom and Snatcher pretty much makes me want to play this thing. I might have to rent it this weekend (if I'm able to take Lego Star Wars II back... I really don't want to)

I bought Lego Star Wars II with Yakuza. I do not plan on selling back either.

Btw, since when did designers start bringing back the Hokuto No Ken influences. It's like they knew I was getting bored of videogames and decided to do something about it.

man that last chapter (kinda SPOILERS but it doesn't matter so much because SO AWESOME)

Battling through the HUGE CITYWIDE RIOTS, making your way into the millennium tower where you're ambushed by a group of SECRET JAPANESE SUPER POLICE, fighting SPECIAL FORCES on the roof, then SHIRTLESS DEATHMATCH WITH YOUR BROTHER FOR TEN BILLION YEN FUCK YEAH

That's a SEGA game in CAPITAL LETTERS

Yeah, the Final Chapter...

I think this is one of those moments where Yakuza just feels sloppy as hell. I would've loved it if they made it tighter (and more heavy handed). As is, though, I'm not sure if they wanted it to be schlock or serious. I came off feeling a little uneasy about the whole game because of that, actually.

If you give the game a little slack, though, this shit is fucking awesome.

By the way, does anyone else feel like a little pussy if you carry around items? The game is already easy as is. I kinda would like to play through it again sans items, but I'm not sure I can handle another 12 hour marathon. Or can I?

Agreed! I played Yakuza after playing Godhand and kept trying to use the right stick to dodge. Yakuza has shitty fighting! Tell the world!

I was talking about making you feel like a badass, but yeah, the fighting in God Hand is much, much better.

Sorry Sega ;_;
