So I know Amplitude is the succesor of Frequency... how do they compare to each other? And does Rez compare, or too different?
Or should I just get Guitar Hero 2. |

The game design is radically different between those titles. In Amplitude and Frequency, it's about following a predeterminded rythm in order to be part of the groove. In Rez, it's all about designing your own groove, albeit subconcisouly, while taking down enemies. Sure, it may be less harmonic, but I for one don't give all that much credit to harmony in contemporary music in the first place, and no two game sessions will ever sound the same. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

So to a certain extent, Amp/Freq are "just" rhythm games, like trippie DDR minus the mat? |

Basically, except you have control over what parts you're playing, which is pretty cool. It's probably the most mechanically interesting rhythm game I've played. The music is aggressively bad, though. Get Guitar Hero 2.
Your use of the word "trippy" made me have the sudden thought that Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Jeff Minter really need to team up. I don't know if this thought is actually true, but I know I would enjoy finding out.

Ah yes, the soothing rhythms of "This is team leader. This is team leader."
I mean, I love Starblade dearly, but it's not Rez. |

Jeff Minter.
I hate to be a hater, especially 'cause I like the guy, and I like the idea of the lonegun developer in this day and age but... I dunno. He did a lot of derivative games w/ llama rebranding, but... I mean apart from seeming to be the kiss of death for various systems, what kind of innovation has he really brought forth? |

step 2: play gridrunner++.

I assume you're not talking about the Silmaris one? |
i was referring to the arcade game. also panzer dragoon. Rez level 5 = Zwei episode 2, route 2 + postapocalyptic muzak. |

I still have the the Edge where they're talking about Unity and Minter gets asked about Rez and he says something along the lines of:
"Yeah, it's a great game, it's still just Panzer Dragoon with its trance trousers on." |

Freq is better than Amp for music. Amp is better than Freq for mechanics. Both are pretty similar, and neither is really like Rez.
That said, you could probably get Amp and Freq both for about $20 if you looked around enough, and I highly recommend that you give them a try if you enjoy rythm games and personal challenges. Rez is by and far a better "game". _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

and an important distinction is that rez isn't a rhythm game at all. it's a shooter that just happens to be set up so that you improvise music by playing, much like otocky. _________________
