I read this porno version of Tintin which had been really badly translated from the French, so Professor Calculus's mishearings didn't make any sense at all.

I'm not certain I get these comics. Are we making fun of the dude? I hope so.
Dracko (maybe dhex too), you should look into Heaven And's Sweeter As the Years Roll By, on Staubgold. Kind of on an avant/moody/clanging plane, little bits like Neubauten/Coil/C93/NWW/all your old favorites. Awfully varied throughout as well. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee. Which dude? The captain or Jus-Tin?
They're mainly taking the piss out of Jesu aficionados who feel that the later releases are too "poppy" and mellow, especially in light of the first EP and self-titled album and Justin K. Broadrick's past endeavours in the likes of Godflesh and Napalm Death.
You should try Jesu, simplicio.
I'll give that a listen. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

Been digesting Health's HEALTH//DISCO remix album lately. It's basically pretty raunchy electro remixes and I have to admit, it's the bone dizzle. |

I have. Dude's the drone version of Reznor, which to me means nice production technique and shit else. Artistically destitute, I'd say, though he'd probably make a good producer. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee. To thee. Though, thine the new machine space."

Maybe he's listening to the wrong stuff? A lot of my friends I've recommended Neubauten to can't stand it, because they always start with 1/2 Mensch. _________________

My first intro to Neubauten was Total Eclipse of the Sun, which blew my mind, and by extension, Silence is Sexy. That and Tabula Rasa I find are excellent places to dip into for most anyone. The latter in particular does a good job of demonstrating just what sounds they dabble in.
I get the impression simplicio may have heard quite a lot of Jesu already, though obviously, I can't say. I usually recommend Heart Ache, Sun Down/Sun Rise and Silver. The EPs, really. The first Jesu track on the split with Envy was very good too, I felt. I'm waiting to see whether Hydra Head release that past Japanese soil though, before importing it from Inoxia Records.
dhex, you've heard of the Why Are We Not Perfect? EP coming up? It's the tracks from the 12" Jesu/Eluvium split to CD with a couple of remixes. Then there's another split with Battle of Mice to look forward to. Both mid-August. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

Tabula Rasa has the phenomenal Headcleaner on it and is worth it for that alone. You should give Silence is Sexy a go too. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

I've also heard, speaking still of Neubauten, that the Musterhaus albums are pretty excellent but haven't had the opportunity to pick them up myself.
The KRUI station has been playing some house stuff by some French artist that I've been really digging but since Iowa flooded I can't get any of their 7-day tracklists and there aren't any DJs in for me to ring.
And it makes me angry. _________________

Blame Hergé.
Battle of Mice aren't my thing either, but this split has been announced since last year, so Jesu's contributions are possibly going to be in an earlier vein.
My personal favourite Eluvium piece is An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death, which sounds mostly unlike the rest of his catalogue. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

He put them in the music so I have to hear them to hear the music? Beyond that though, I find lyrics are generally a decent indicator of overall artistic merit; if Justin's fine with putting something that worthless on his album, what sort of judgment does that show? Unsurprisingly, the music itself terminally boring to match, rote composition and mindless drum trax. I think he can wrangle a nice tone from a guitar and little more. But so what? People have been doing that for decades now, with far better results than this.
The comic suggests I need to get stoned to enjoy it. But I'd rather just enjoy some music that doesn't require qualifiers like that. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee. To thee. Though, thine the new machine space."

man i gotta disagree a lot about lyrics. i love me some great music (sleep's dopesmoker, for example) that has the stone(d)-cold dumbest fucking lyrics ever. "weedians go to the nazerene"? "drop out of life with bong in hand / follow the smoke to the riff-filled land"?
still, totally hot.
delivery is far more important than content. _________________

I agree. I'd actually say both Sleep and Jesu exhibit internal consistency between music and lyrics, it's just that Sleep's music/lyrics are obviously self-aware stoner-mystic territory, where Jesu's come off like the highlights of a 14 year old's tormented poetry journal.
Consequently, I'd much rather spend my time with Sleep (though I prefer Om). Or Sunn! I was listening to those guys again last night- they're great! And they summon up a massive guitar tone without slobbering in the lap of popular post rock.
In other music: Durrty Goodz's Axiom EP is the first hip hop I've really loved in absolutely ages.
And the Cowon D2: The best thing ever? Certainly is. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee. To thee. Though, thine the new machine space."

i honestly have no idea what homeslice is saying in most jesu songs, just like i had no idea what the sleep guys were getting at. om is great, but they're another example of really dumb lyrics that just happen to be excellent.
i've never gotten into sunn, and i tend to like ambient drift/drone stuff. they're just too boring for me. i'd rather listen to stars of the lid.
cowon is definitely the mp3 player maker of choice for me. _________________

So I've been listening to the new Qua EP, Silver Red:
It's pretty great! If you like experimental, not quite ambient but totally awesome music (I don't know how to define it), check it out.
The following is a link to probably my favourite track off the EP:
http://www.mediafire.com/?9zeorx14pze
You may have heard of Qua before. He provided the soundtrack for Paul Robertson's Kings Of Power 4 Billion%, and I've previously posted the music video (animated by Paul Robertson) for Devils Eyes, off his previous album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOQFxXFyZO0
If you like what you hear, head to www.quamusic.com and buy some of his stuff. It's brilliant and well worth it. _________________

Dr. Dog is from Philadelphia, so I wanted to appreciate them. But aside from a couple of foot-tapping instances, I find them bland. Y'all will probably feel the same.
I get the feeling that everyone here likes darker, more electronic music than I do. Except James Harvey.
Oh, hey, not news, but Daft Punk's Alive is lots and lots of fun. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

"What then is the decent, reasonable attitude to adopt? Very simple: make the assumption, first, that the old style - whatever it is - has exhausted its possibilities and can only offer repetition or trivial variations of familiar masterpieces. I am not saying you should believe your favorite music is obsolete. I invite you to /assume/ that it may be: for by trying to think that it is, as the new composer obviously has done, you will begin to discover what he is up to... If styles and genres did not suffer exhaustion, there would be only one style, one genre in each art from its beginnings to yesterday.
The word "electronic" suggests a final objection with which it is well to come to grips. Most people of artistic tastes share the widespread distrust and dislike of machinery and argue that anything pretending to be art cannot come out of a machine: art is the human product par excellence, and electronic music, born of intricate circuits and the oscillations of particles generated by Con Edison, is a contradiction in terms. Here again the answer is simple: the moment man ceased to make music with his voice alone the art became machine-ridden. Orpheus's lyre was a machine, a symphony orchestra is a regular factory for making artificial sounds, and a piano is the most appalling contrivance of levers and wires this side of the steam engine."

The bit about trying to see the past medium as the "electronic" artist would see it is useful.
Is it awful that I meant "electronic" as a genre and not an instrument set? Probably. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

Nah, most modern music is "electronic" in the sense that it's using instruments that require electrical power, meaning that "electronic music" is more useful as a phrase to describe a genre. |

Ben Frost's Theory of Machines does something I've long been looking for, which is applying fuzz treatments to percussion as well as guitar, and upping the level of dissonance and abstraction in ambient/drone/shoegaze. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee. I have that one on order, actually! Can't wait to give it a thorough listen.
It was kind of inevitable I'd pick this up once The Wire compared the man favourably to both Trent Reznor and Arvo Pärt. And it has a sing called We Love You Michael Gira on it too! _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

Charles Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus

Ryan Bingham - Mescalito
Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
Townes van Zandt - Townes van Zandt
Young@Heart Chorus - Mostly Live (Live)
John Coltrane - Ascension
Otis Redding - The Very Best of Otis Redding
