My co-worker caught his daughter trying to ghost-ride her whip shortly after receiving her learners permit...that went over really well.

If these kids can overcome their handicap of being white then they could posibly be the best ghostriders the world has ever seen.

i'm fairly sure ghostriding was invented by gudios in northern new jersey in 1988 or so. at least, that's what i remember this from.

john fahey is the best rainy day soundtrack evar.

It probably dates to way back when from who knows where, it's just become connected with the East Bay (of the Yay Area) and if nothing else, the term "ghost-ride the whip" first appears in various songs by East Bay rappers (even if E-40 is from Vallejo).

It's not racist, it's a fact! Watch the videos, white guys can't do it. They're not black enough.

Nine Inch Nails' [With_Teeth] mashed up with Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd, themselves by three, Gorillaz, the Stooges, Kool and the Gang, David Bowie, Lee Hazlewood, Joy Division and the Fight Club soundtrack.

It's laughable.

It's awesome.

Be sure to check out the rest of the guy's site. There are some pretty fun mash-ups to be found.

In other NIN related news: We may see an album before 2010.

Mental Funeral. It's absolutely full of necro songs like In The Grip Of Winter, which is possibly the best song that Autopsy had ever done. I love Autopsy, their songs lumber around like a wounded beast that is on the absolute brink of death. All death metal should invoke a similar aura.

Most people I've met who're really into metal / goth culture are racists. Why is this?

first of all, "goth culture" is a terrible term. musical tastes, funny clothing and slang does not make something a culture. don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

second of all, i dunno. you meet a lot of racists?

all the metalheads i know are huge nerds who get straight a's and brush their teeth a lot. or they do piles of drugs and listen to david icke. (or both)

Goth can't really be called a culture at all on the grounds that it was just a fashion statement. Don't be fooled by all the pseudo-romantic babble, it was just an excuse to run around in capes with eyeliner and flip open tombs.

That said, Bauhaus are still awesome.

All the metalheads I know are fat simpletons.

to clarify, there's a lot of folks who feel the term "culture" provides a given activity or group with a form of respect. i see it as an issue of taxonomy, not respect.

i dunno. you meet a lot of racists?

i was preempting the usual argument about how hip hop culture (to pick the most prominent example) is indeed a culture in and of itself and not a subcultural grab bag, and to claim otherwise is an example of de-legitimizing certain population groups. which is a heady power to have, mind you, and i try to use it ethically, but more to the point there's a problem with calling any group of three people who share an interest a "culture" which is it destroys useful distinctions. which has already happened (a la "meme" and other useful qualifiers) which as scratch might say is the perils of trying to be even marginally descriptivist in a world of chaos.

Yeah, it's easy to be too casual about words. Debasing useful words is :(

Not really. I don't meet a lot of goths. The ones I do meet tend to be racists, though.

i refer to my original answer.

i mean, i dunno. i can't think of any goth-ish folks i've known who were more or less racist than the population as a whole, with some exceptions (i.e. guidos) but obviously you're drawing from a different population group. furthermore, i'm a bit too old to really have any meaningful contact with that kind of group so it's entirely possible i missed a subcultural shift in addition to sharing a distinctly different population of contact.

I love Linda Linda Linda, a movie about four high school girls who play covers of Blue Hearts songs at a school festival, a whole lot. When I got to work today the copy of the films OST was waiting for me in my mailbox and has been on repeat all day. With instrumental music by James Iha (former Pumpkin Smasher) and insert songs by Base Ball Bear (whose bassist played the bassist Nozomi in the movie), it also includes all the performances from the movie by the band.

I uploaded it here, you should check it out.

Could it have something to do with the archetypal goth looking as pale (white) as possible?

Wait, what if goths all started wearing blackface? Would that be more or less racist? Can someone please create (or at least invent on wikipedia) a rogue faction of blackface goths?

Lots and lots of Napalm Death.

Smear Campaign is by far their most furiously brutal record in years, and one of their best since Fear, Emptiness, Despair. That record remains my favorite of theirs to this day — even beyond Utopia Banished and the excellent Order of the Leech — although albums such as From Enslavement to Obliteration and Harmony Corruption are generally regarded as the better and more "important" Napalm records. This is largely due to the more varied rhythms and lengthier compositions that give them room to breathe. And there's no doubt at all that I love breakneck savagery in metal, but it's always better when tempered with more rhythmically engaging breakdowns and such. With Smear Campaign they've done a fine job of mixing their grindcore with some very pit-worthy grooves. It's quite clear that the death of longtime guitarist Jesse Pintado has done anything but slow them down.

Every time I see that sleeve art I get nostalgic for From Enslavement...

Each time I get around to wanting to buy that album other music gets in the way which is mildly frustrating since I've heard nothing but good things about it. I haven't bought an original ND album in a while (Leaders Not Followers part 2 and Noise For Music's Sake don't count) and though I prefer old ND back when they were playing "true" grindcore and hadn't yet undergone their death metal metamorphosis of sorts I am quite partial to what I've heard over the past decade.

Maybe this week.

I highly recommend it, particularly to someone such as yourself, though I feel I must also speak up for Order of the Leech. Maybe if you've got room for two!

I was thinking about this last night, and while I can do it and all, my car doesn't have a stereo so I'd be ghostriding to the sound of silence.

Then you can ride silently, like a ghost gliding through the air.

I think you'll need to rip up the seats in the back to fit some speakers in. That's why all these kids are ghostriding their whips, there's no room in the car for anyone to sit.

I wonder if there's a correlation between the music you listen to and your Dr Kawashima's Brain Age. I say this because I've got a Brain Age of 41 and I've been listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder, Joanna Newsom and Sly and The Family Stone. Earlier on I was listening to Styx and ELO, too!

My Brain Age was 21 back when I was playing Brain Age. I listened to a lot of Outkast. I still do.

I hope there's a correlation, too!
