i actually stumbled on that game a few days ago, and that's what it immediately called to mind for me too. i managed to get past the apple screen, died immediately, and did not have the energy to complete the apple screen again. _________________

I dunno, I'd describe it more as "like Knytt, only a thousand times uglier, less atmospheric and with a much clumsier control system". _________________

Riot Act is a short Half-Life 2 mod which I have not, unfortunately, been able to play. But the game looks solid in itself, and I'll give it a go as soon as.
P.S. Rose and Camilla has been translated into English. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

shoot 'em is pretty much the coolest thing ever. it runs at a completely improbably resolution, though, so i can only have half of the game on my screen at any given time. if anyone has any suggestions, they would be appreciated! _________________

They've been around a while, yeah. I think (?) I first stumbled onto them back when Lore Sjöberg's site littlefluffy.com was still updating daily. Grow and the others are pretty decent optimization challenges. It always kind of reminded me of the stuff at Vector Park. |

i am (probably predictably) totally in love with punishment. the original, not the sequel (which doesn't give me the feeling i'm being punished for my own mistakes). they both invoke a different kind of masochism than the kind strict machine was trying to tap. somewhere between the two is, probably, my next game. _________________

graham goring complained that knytt gave him the impression that nifflas had come up with some good mechanics but was too lazy to make a game out of them. i disagree - i think knytt is a game about quiet exploration - but knytt stories is the game he was probably looking for.
actually, knytt stories is modular - a level editor (which i have not tinkered with yet) and a bunch of games built around it. i just finished the included story - "the machine" - and it's definitely a product of the creator of within a deep forest. there are some wonderfully tricky parts and a big world that opens up as the player unlocks more abilities (it has the same sort of 16-bit sensibility i saw in deep forest. no mine carts this time around, fortunately). and it's every bit as gorgeous as knytt - it's been a long time since the ending of a game made me gasp.
i havn't played any expansions yet. there are a few available on the website. i will soon, though. _________________

That's pretty great, except I find it pretty difficult to distinguish food from not-food, and which thing you can jump on top of without dying.

Some of the levels in the third party expansion are really nice. The official levels are pretty nice, especially An Underwater Adventure. When are we, as a forum, going to do a community addon? _________________

an underwater adventure might be my favorite of the bunch. it is so perfect.
the third-party adventures aren't nearly as polished, but they have some clever ideas for using the editor.
i'd definitely like to make an episode at some point. _________________

Fileplanet.com has ad-supported copies of Ubisoft's Far Cry, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and Rayman Raving Rabbids available for download. You need an account at Fileplanet.com and Ubi.com. The downloads are lengthy, as you might expect. I'm about to fire up Far Cry to see how the ads are placed.
Also! Command & Conquer Gold - the original that works under XP with some finagling - was also made free by EA for the series' 12th anniversary. Command & Conquer's official site has the links to ISOs for discs 1 and 2, as well as instructions on getting the game running properly in XP.
** Update: I played Far Cry for about 10 minutes and didn't see an ad. I read that it happens during respawns in Prince of Persia, so I'll go back in a bit to see if anything pops up when I die. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

do you remember sumotori dreams - or, as i like to call it, "sumo learns to walk"? in the same vein is nekofight, or (as i like to call it) "depressed robot breakdancer".
use the arrow keys to make your polygon person shamble listlessly around. the x and c keys kick with the left and right legs respectively. hold them both to do a backflip. tap them both to make your person fall flat on its back and refuse to get up. hold z to grab your opponent. you can turn off gravity and float in space forever. _________________

i wish nitrome could produce a decent game. their games always have such good ideas (even when they steal them from other people), and their pixel art is so earnest, i wish they could make games that are actually snappy and tight instead of plodding and glitchy.

The final map in the current arc of the brilliant Half-Life 2 mod, Minerva, is out since 8:00PM.
Time to give it a whirl.
For those not in the know, think System Shock 2 fucking Marathon at knifepoint in the Half-Life 2 engine. Heavy influences also include Halo: Combat Evolved's The Silent Cartographer map (as it turns out, it's the demo map, so give it a whirl, it's worth the while). _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

redrunner is a c64 homebrew game, the sequel to the earlier greenrunner, an homage to jeff minter's gridrunner. like the yak titles that inspire it, it is the kind of shooter which reinvents itself with every stage. _________________

Anyone here tried out Rorschach? it's technically still in development, so it's short and doesn't have a climatic ending, but the premise and visuals are alluring and the dialogue system is worth exploring. It's made by one Jens Andersson from Starbreeze Studios. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

Yeah, even though that guy isn't funny at all, and I wouldn't leave him in charge of a child's playgroup, I really liked the style of that game and how it mixed media and all that stuff. He should have made it so the video played automatically whenever you finished a level instead of having to click on it, though.
It was like the game equivalent of a dodgy photocopied zine with band reviews and terrible artwork, i.e. great. |

Yahtzee's made a new Trilby game, titled The Art of Theft. It's a stealth platformer, which is pretty impressive considering it runs under the Adventure Games Studios engine. Has a few minor foibles, but is otherwise good stuff. The story is horrendously weak though, but that's unimportant. What's more amusing is Yahtzee using gameplay elements he'd otherwise bitch about in his neckbeard wankfest Zero Punctuation, like button mashing. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

That is definitely the problem with trying to wear the twin hats of critic and artiste. I thnk you can just about get away with it if as a critic you only talk about things you like (which he doesn't). |

I was about to edit my post to say 'it would also help if your game wasn't fucking shit'. I haven't played a game like that in years. It was like an old Commodore Amiga game that would have scored 74% in Amiga Format. It's got the most over-complicated and unintuitive control system ever, and for a game that has about 10 minutes of 'how to' text I managed to get stuck on the first level. It's without charm! |
