I don't believe so. Most people play the original in a window with the PDF manual open to help guild them along. One method I read that helps is reading other players' After Action Reports. I recall trying Terrors from the Deep when it was first released and getting demolished. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

dess: Kieron Gillen wanks overs Mighty Jill Off.
The best part though is Lauren McCubbin's description of it as “Disney’s The Story of O, with like, singing birds and shit”. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!"

http://kotaku.com/5052089/yup-youll-be-able-to-buy-a-mega-man-9-box
Looks like that Mega Man 9 box will see a limited retail release. It's a pity that they won't even put the game on a disc, since it feels kind of hollow to be marvelling at JUST a cardboard box and a game container. If they could have put the game on this, along with a few interviews, and plenty of fun art then this could've been a decent seller on the internet.
Still, the marketing for Mega Man 9 has been fantastic so far. If the game lives up to all the care that everyone seems to be putting into packaging this experience then we'll have the most fascinating thing to come out of Capcom this year. _________________

I don't share the reporter's joy that Sakurai has been playing Bioshock, but I can't wait to see the video that comes up for this chat. Keep your eyes open. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

Also, I'm not sure why it's meant to be such a revelation that Biohazard was planned as a FPS. That's... fairly common knowledge, yes? _________________

You know what my other favorite RPG is besides Phantasy Star II? Skies of Arcadia.
I somehow ignored this Etrian Odyssey thing until now. Looks like it may be sort of okay? There's a sequel already... _________________

Skies of Arcadia was quite wonderful. Wonderful enough to write an article about it, in any case.
Though wouldn't PSII and Skies of Arcadia be somewhat opposed to one another? In the sense that they're thematically very different. PSII is the early Sega, before Sonic, before there was anything to really define the platform: it's strange, unsettling, and hard as hell. Skies of Arcadia if there's any game that defines -- and recaptures -- what that whole Blue Skies in Games thing was about then that's it.
If anything, Skies of Arcadia seems to remind me more of Phantasy Star IV. In fact, I've kind of wondered about your thoughts on PSIV. You've certainly let your feelings on PSII be known, but you've rarely addressed IV's significance to the series.
I enjoy the hell of a lot. It's got a killer intro, one of the most amazing ever; a story that references every single game in the series, yet does so without too much winking and nudging; and a wonderful little cuscene workaround, something that feels so much electifying after all that slow-moving CGI mush. Whether it's the best game in the series is debatable, though it's definitely the most accessible.
In any case, three cheers for Rieko Kodama! _________________

Here is a really good review of Myst DS. Rather, it's barely a review of Myst DS, and more a discussion about Myst and how the behaviour of the brothers mirrors that of a typical gamer.

Oh, I didn't reply about the Phantasy Star.
Yeah... it'll take a bit of energy. Briefly, the fourth game is... okay. In isolation it strikes me as fairly generic. As the last game in the series, it's a pretty fantastic way to go out.
Yeah, the design sensibilities -- the character dynamics and things -- are maybe a bit closer to Arcadia, which makes sense as they're closer together in time. Yet given the formula they're both working in, I think Arcadia is a lot more ambitious a game than EotM. It's also free of a lot of clutter that EotM was forced to tow, to do what it wanted to do.
I might expand on that if I feel perkier at some point. _________________

What the fuck is up with all this auto-healing in games now? Especially in Deus Ex where there's food and other health items all over the joint. _________________

Hey, it worked in one game. Clearly it will work in every other game regardless of context!

Is it confirmed that healing items will be included. I thought the idea of auto-healing was to do away with healing items. _________________ Signature:

Hmm, Skies of Arcadia is one of my all-time favourite RPGs so if this turns out like that, it may welll be worth a look. I've never played any Phantasy star though. |

If you've the patience for Dragon Quest progression, Phantasy Stars 1 and 2 are amazing. Particularly the second. If you've the patience for Dragon Quest and the tolerance for interesting yet unfinished concepts, PS3 is... sort of fascinating. If you want to be entertained by a pacey and lively, if rather run-of-the-mill, 16-bit RPG, the fourth game is well-done. Most of the things that actually make it interesting will kind of fly over your head if you haven't played the earlier games, though. _________________

Never played any Dragon Quest either. I dunno, neither of those ever appealed to me (little that I knew of them) and they still don't. I think all the DQ merchandise that suffocates you in Japan helped to further put me off too.
In other, wonderful news: Something new from Mizuguchi! Dunno what it is but yippee, it's probably gonna be good. |

A friend of mine still regularly maxes out the score counter in Lumines. I dunno what it is about that game, but some people just really dig it. |

This is something that I've never had adequately explained, yes. Whatever it is that grabs people seems to clutch with ceramic talons. Yet all I get out of it is... squares.
It seems like a big practical joke. _________________

Maybe that's a cover story for the mythical next issue of TGQ:
What's the Fucking Deal with Lumines? (p. 14)
Also inside: Mario's Realistic Pants (p. 4) and The Secrets of Strider Sliding (p. E12)
I'd read it. _________________

I don't know what to say because if it doesn't grab you, it doesn't grab you.
For me, it's a beautiful harmony of simple, elegant puzzle mechanics and Mizuguchi's trademark of fitting it all in with the music. The actual block mechanics themselves are really interesting to me, and when you start to realise patterns and combinations, it pulls you in.
There's nothing that comes across as gimmicky. Everything feels neat, and clean, and fresh, and quick.
On top of that, I think the levels themselves progress in a really good way. Sometimes, they fit together smoothly and feel very gentle. Other times, they're fucking challenging and you find yourself sitting up, staring at the screen completely absorbed and almost holding your breath trying to make everything tesselate well. Then out of nowhere comes that sweet Reggae music and you EXHALE.
Also, it's just pretty. I love all the things they've done with the level design. And I have the music on my iTunes, it's a great soundtrack. |

Is there anything more to the mechanics than... putting together squares, to make bigger squares?
It's like it's a game about organizing my shelves. If I had nothing on my shelves but identical cubes. While listening to dance music.
I wonder what Andy Warhol would have to say about this. _________________

is it just the music then? i guess it tricks you pretty well into thinking you're actually making something |

Uh, isn't that kind of akin to saying Dr. Mario tricks you pretty well into thinking you're actually destroying something?

I'd rather be playing Columns. _________________

See, I prefer Meteos, though I never fell in love with it. I like the blastoff mechanic and use of physics there, and I thought the wild diversity helped the game, even if the music wasn't as good. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee.
