Man that looks like a really satisfying game.
Also a bit repetitive.
I remember watching a video montage of the few Amiga FPS titles on youtube awhile back. Some of them looked alright! The only one I ever played was Alien Breed 3D 2. _________________

also a bit FUCKING GREY.
the one thing doom imitators (including doom 3) always get wrong in their attempts to be DARKYR AND BLEAKYR is the fact that doom is FUCKING COLORFUL. sizzling blue carpets, cool green technology, pink pinky demons. so many first-person shooters are lacking in color and the most beloved one is absolutely glowing with it. _________________

Vanilla Gloom has a bit of colour, I saw some shots the other day but I forget where. It's got some pretty terrible boxart. _________________

I would put Doom 2 in that list. It's neat that they were excited about using more subtle colour palettes and so on, but I'll take Doom 1's lush green Peruvian mountains over the muted hues and shit-brown skies of Doom 2. Look how they goth'd up the Minotaur dudes in the second game:
Doom 1:

Uh, actually, those are just two different enemy types! One is a baron of hell and the other is a hell knight.
DooM II was much bleaker, though. I'd also argue that DooM 1 didn't really get colourful until the third episode. _________________

The first episode is HECKUVA colourful!
I know it's two different enemy types, but they're emblematic of how the overall aesthetic sensibility changed from one game to the next.
I think Gloom's colour scheme is pretty rad, actually. It's a shame it goes into the old cathedrals-and-hell routine in the later stages, because I think the colour styling in the early stages is quite sophisticated, even if they are just the plain ol' space stations we're used to.
Also I'm not sure why they chose to make the enemies explodable with even the default weapon. |

Yeah, I know, it's easy to be selective, but there are a lot of really colourful areas in that game. And some of the enemies ARE bright pink, or bright red with blue mouths!
Look at the title screen, even!

Yeah, that Amiga in a Box thing was the most needlessly complicated emulator ever.
I found a pretty neat Let's Play of that game which sounds a bit like it's being narrated by a Lebanese Pimp.

Silly Putty!!! I loved that game. And Cannon Fodder was one of my favourites too.
Now, THIS game I played a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsqoKVi-d0g&NR=1
It was such a generic-looking platformer and yet I could play it over and over. I wonder if it was that music that would keep me going. |

Oh man, I was looking at that, it looked ass!
I used to play this game called ZOOL all the time which was the Amiga's supposed Sonic-and-Mario-beater. I watched it back and it is BALLS. You have this spin attack which kind of makes you invincible, and there's no limitation on using it, so there's basically nothing to stop you from spin attacking through the entire fucking game. The programmers obviously noticed this, so instead of limiting the spin attack they just stuck a load of spikes everywhere. That's the ultimate hallmark of a hacky platform game designer right there. Spikes everwhere.
Oh look, here you go. http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=-RbQQKGQ7Fs&feature=related
Here's The Chaos Engine! The Bitmap Brothers always had really sophisticated graphics in their games! This was something of a masterpiece, in terms of their pixel art. Whatever happened to them?
http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm-X8zmxpns&feature=related
Wow the actual level desgn is really stupid. You pick up a key and a bush right next to you disappears. You walk through the gap and there are pick-ups there. Why have the key or the bush in the first place? Also, the non-stop rave soundtrack is not really conducive to the Victorian setting. |

There are actually three arcade games you can find in Gloom!
Super Frog is a bit of an in-joke with a friend, he always brings it up as some amazing game and then we make fun of it for an hour.
Chaos Engine is one of the greatest co-op games ever. A bit weak as a solo game, though.
I had Zool on the PC. It's pretty bad. Sure made me want to buy a chupa-chup, though. It had a sequel! and a GB port!

Maybe to show players that keys can make bushes dissapear so they make more note of suspicious bushes later on? _________________

Super Frog is exactly that sort of game. I remember when I found it, I used to wonder about how it came about. I always pictured a bunch of peoples' grandpas sitting around a table.
"What should we make the hero?"
"Something the kids love. What the hell do kids love these days?"
"DISRESPECT! BED WETTING! PRE-MARITAL SEX!"
"Calm down, Marvin. Hmm, don't kids love dogs?"
"FROGS! Kids love frogs. And he's a hero so he wears a cape. And he can run very fast and jump very high."
Did anyone else here play Rodland? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55f6W_8zCQ0 |

I played Rodland. It would have been my first exposure to Japanese manga-style artwork, I think! I remember thinking it was pretty good, although I never got to play it more than once.
Here is the ATOMIC MUD MINES level of Rick Dangerous 2!
http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=cMkyYtEeP0M&feature=related
I may have mentioned before how I am terrified of any cartoon which features tentacles coming from an unseen source, so I couldn't watch the cartoon 'Trap Door' as a kid or now. Similarly, I was scared of this level of Rick Dangerous which features green fists shooting out of the earth, trying to grab you! Worse still, halfway through the level the character's WHOLE HIDEOUS GREEN HEAD pops out of the ground! It scared the SHIT out of me. In fact, it scared me so much was I never played Rick Dangerous again. I'm going to watch it back now to see if I still find it as scary.
EDIT: Uh. You can see it at 1:45. It is not what I remember. |

P.S. who made that pixel version of the dessknight?
Here's another bitmap brothers game, Gods, set in ancient greece! No epoch of history is an innappropiate period for rave music! http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=xN0VIgO3U0k&feature=related |

I played Rodland all the time when I was a child. I remember my friends laughing at me when I called it cute. It's a pretty decent Bubble Bobble-ish game!
Rick Dangerous is such a shitty game!
I played Gods all the time, but foudn it way too fucking hard. I think I never finished the second level. The music was much more fitting in the version I played. Same with Chaos Engine. _________________

I was obsessed with Gods. I played it all the time AND sucked at it still. I've replayed it a bunch of times through the years, and I still suck at it. It's a fucking difficult game. Regardless, I continue to love it.
It was one of those games that actually made my hairs stand on end. I remember just being completely drawn in when playing it. That theme song is one of the best songs I'd ever heard in a game, and I can remember one of the earliest things I did on the internet when I realised I could was find .mod files of the 'Gods' opening and the 'Lotus Turbo Challenge' theme.
God's could freak me out sometimes, though not necesarilly from actual scariness, but just knowing that I could be doing so well in a level and at any moment, some screaming, flying skulls would come the fuck out of nowhere and cause me to fall of a high-ish ladder to my death.
Another reason that game made me feel so strange and compelled to keep playing it was that the hero's goal to join the Gods almost felt like I was sending him to his death. And the Gods were wishing for his death! He was struggling against all the most horrible forces, surrounded by nothing but death, death, and more death, for something I could barely understand. There were themes there that were kind of challenging to me as a little girl!
Man. Great game.
I never played Rick Dangerous much.
Rodland I played a tonne. It was one of my earliest exposures to Japanese style-artwork. I really loved that all the enemies were these adorable little woodland and sea creatures and I got to bash them over and over. Also, it was a game I could actually play to the end - a rare thing!
Rodland always reminds me in some ways of New Zealand Story. |

I played the Megadrive port of Gods and ended up not liking it very much at all due to shit flying everywhere. I heard that it was sped up in the porting process which is probably what repelled me. It's probably the game that still makes me think that Amiga games looked better than they played. You'd think that I would have stopped making such generalizations years ago. _________________

Nah, it's about right. Having grown up on the Amiga. I remember being unimpressed by Super Mario World when I saw it round a friend's house aged 8 because the graphics seemed so flat and functional compared to what I was used to. Then I actually played it through aged 19/20 and it was better than any platform game I'd ever played!
Does anyone remember SYNDICATE

I do! It was a cool looking game but I could never get far in it.

I guess now we're discussing Amiga games exclusively, guys
Which sucks because it means that now this reply I wrote about Syndicate Wars is no longer relevant
Also I was going to write about Rise of the Dragon, but I guess it's no longer on-topic |

And also, we were staying on topic! We were talking about Amiga games through the medium of replay videos! Request thread to be merged back again >:O |

There are two SNES entries/ports of this franchise, and when I randomly stumbled across them on the internet via means, and they ended up being all colorful and having weird voice samples, all I could think was "what the hell?"
I grew up on Commodore 64 (not that I remember much of anything besides Ducks Ahoy) and in America, so I missed out on all the beauty of the Amiga and Atari ST. Now I go to Mobygames and look longingly at screenshots of RPGs I'll never play. |

I remember that! It was on Gamesmaster once, I think. It's weird because soap storylines are so transitory, the things beings referenced in the game are going to seem completely outdated by the time the game comes out, and two years down the line half of the characters aren't going to be in the show anymore.
Look, there's Helen Daniels carrying that horrible portrait she painted of Mrs. Mangel!

I also like they have emus and kangaroos running about the streets because AUSTRALIA. When I lived in Canada I was constantly asked if we had kangaroos running around the city streets. Eventually I got sick of it and started telling people I wrestled wombats. _________________

When I went all the way out to Broken Hill which is, like, proper civilization stuck out in the arse-end of nowhere I saw lots of kangaroos and emus just sitting around on the golf course that is out there. I should look for the photo I took, it's really something.
I live in a country which has kangaroos and emus running around the streets and I honestly had never seen anything like that before. _________________
