I'm not certain I get these comics. Are we making fun of the dude? I hope so.

Dracko (maybe dhex too), you should look into Heaven And's Sweeter As the Years Roll By, on Staubgold. Kind of on an avant/moody/clanging plane, little bits like Neubauten/Coil/C93/NWW/all your old favorites. Awfully varied throughout as well.

They're mainly taking the piss out of Jesu aficionados who feel that the later releases are too "poppy" and mellow, especially in light of the first EP and self-titled album and Justin K. Broadrick's past endeavours in the likes of Godflesh and Napalm Death.

You should try Jesu, simplicio. Cool

Maybe he's listening to the wrong stuff? A lot of my friends I've recommended Neubauten to can't stand it, because they always start with 1/2 Mensch.

My first intro to Neubauten was Total Eclipse of the Sun, which blew my mind, and by extension, Silence is Sexy. That and Tabula Rasa I find are excellent places to dip into for most anyone. The latter in particular does a good job of demonstrating just what sounds they dabble in.

I get the impression simplicio may have heard quite a lot of Jesu already, though obviously, I can't say. I usually recommend Heart Ache, Sun Down/Sun Rise and Silver. The EPs, really. The first Jesu track on the split with Envy was very good too, I felt. I'm waiting to see whether Hydra Head release that past Japanese soil though, before importing it from Inoxia Records.

dhex, you've heard of the Why Are We Not Perfect? EP coming up? It's the tracks from the 12" Jesu/Eluvium split to CD with a couple of remixes. Then there's another split with Battle of Mice to look forward to. Both mid-August.

Tabula Rasa has the phenomenal Headcleaner on it and is worth it for that alone. You should give Silence is Sexy a go too.

I've also heard, speaking still of Neubauten, that the Musterhaus albums are pretty excellent but haven't had the opportunity to pick them up myself.

The KRUI station has been playing some house stuff by some French artist that I've been really digging but since Iowa flooded I can't get any of their 7-day tracklists and there aren't any DJs in for me to ring.

And it makes me angry.

I don't think you can buy the Musterhaus series any longer. But the previously supporter-only Jewels experiments have been released to CD. Nice package at that.

Battle of Mice aren't my thing either, but this split has been announced since last year, so Jesu's contributions are possibly going to be in an earlier vein.

My personal favourite Eluvium piece is An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death, which sounds mostly unlike the rest of his catalogue.

I agree. I'd actually say both Sleep and Jesu exhibit internal consistency between music and lyrics, it's just that Sleep's music/lyrics are obviously self-aware stoner-mystic territory, where Jesu's come off like the highlights of a 14 year old's tormented poetry journal.

Consequently, I'd much rather spend my time with Sleep (though I prefer Om). Or Sunn! I was listening to those guys again last night- they're great! And they summon up a massive guitar tone without slobbering in the lap of popular post rock.

In other music: Durrty Goodz's Axiom EP is the first hip hop I've really loved in absolutely ages.

And the Cowon D2: The best thing ever? Certainly is.

i honestly have no idea what homeslice is saying in most jesu songs, just like i had no idea what the sleep guys were getting at. om is great, but they're another example of really dumb lyrics that just happen to be excellent.

i've never gotten into sunn, and i tend to like ambient drift/drone stuff. they're just too boring for me. i'd rather listen to stars of the lid.

cowon is definitely the mp3 player maker of choice for me.

Nah, most modern music is "electronic" in the sense that it's using instruments that require electrical power, meaning that "electronic music" is more useful as a phrase to describe a genre.

Ben Frost's Theory of Machines does something I've long been looking for, which is applying fuzz treatments to percussion as well as guitar, and upping the level of dissonance and abstraction in ambient/drone/shoegaze.

It was kind of inevitable I'd pick this up once The Wire compared the man favourably to both Trent Reznor and Arvo Pärt. And it has a sing called We Love You Michael Gira on it too!
