what a vile fucking asshole. and i'm not even talking about helmsley.
what sort of world is it where the same people who would rightfully contest a completely immoral, fruitless and stone-cold retarded war (i am assuming, and also am assuming i'm mostly right) then turn around to say gee it's too bad the government isn't getting more money. and tries to then turn that into "we're all paying for her charity donation" load of fuckwittery.
what sort of head injury as a child leads to this kind of...whatever it is. i don't know what it is. it's bad. i know that. but, seriously...what the living fuck is wrong with you, dude? your whole school runs on charity donations. is your livelihood a kind of theft? _________________

Reminds me of Orestes Brownson, who argued that capitalism was just except that we should all start on equal footing, so we should have a 100% estate tax and each get a stipend on birth. Yes, because what we want to do is encourage rich people to splurge all of their money on their death bed. That way they won't nefariously donate it to take care of animals, the bastards! _________________

leona may have been not much of a person, but she's still better than the crusties and their "please mister won't you help me feed my dog he's hungry" routine.
in sadness news i have to see beth orton tonight in prospect park.

I assume he doesn't really mean "just as powerful" and "strong," except in the wishy-washiest of ways. _________________

tee hee. (first sentence, though the edit history is pretty good too.)
it amazes me that people who would, generally, be all "i just wanna be me" suddenly become government cum dumpsters the minute taxes enter the picture. _________________

I read that yesterday and wept silent tears for the human race.
Also, I'm reading this Japanese account of the Sino-Japanese War called "Living Soldiers," transalted as, god knows why, as "Soldiers Alive." I suggest this book to you, mike. It's pretty sick. I keep thinking of this scene, when a few soldiers bayonet a Chinese girl for crying too much and all the CO can say when he sees the results is "Man, you guys sure know how to waste a good lay." Amazingly, there's no pity in any of this, the soldiers who behead Chinamen for the slightest infraction aren't treated as monsters, it's seen as being a mere consequence of war, regrettable but not really worth fussing over once all is said and done. Reminds of Ballard, actually, in Empire of the Sun, which also doesn't really pretend to care about the millions of dead Chinese. In fact, I can't think of any non-Chinese author, even the ones supposedly sympathetic to China, who have ever shown any sign of giving a shit about them. Reminds of most Western writing about Russia, actually.
Anyway, this book was written during the Sino-Japanese War and was not meant to denounce the war, or the soldiers waging it. Thus, it's shocking to see an author adopt such a strange, alien ethos. It's something that I've never seen anyone write a about war in such a way. _________________

Don't know how it's going where you are but around here there is a signifigant overlap between repo men and car thieves. They establish a relationship with authority, and that gets them the trust that lets them take a car away as long as they notify the police from a payphone prior. Then reports of theft get disregarded as people trying to cheat the system.
It mainly happens to folks in black neighborhoods who are less likely to trust police or be trusted by police in the first place. _________________ Signature:

the repo folks in the city fall into two categories: the type you mentioned above (though it seems rare) and, well, repo guys.
there's a general dislike of the entire concept of the repo guy, which is understandable in one sense (it sucks to wake up to no car) but not so much in terms of not paying for stuff and expecting to get away with it. _________________

They don't like getting charged for the repo either. Because the guy whose car gets repoed is going to have to foot the bill. It's more about hating the banks though in that case, at least from what experience I've seen. _________________ Signature:

no doubt.
i have a habit of pretending to listen to music or read in public - trains, bars, the local dunkin donuts, etc - and instead listen to other peoples' conversations, particularly those about the economy or politics.i am continually amazed at something i had never really thought possible; people who have taken a loaded gun, put it against their hand and then pulled the trigger generally believe the gun manufacturer is to blame. this cuts across apparent (or even explicit) religious and social classes, as well as political positions. i've heard old broken racist dudes in bay ridge talk like your typical snotty park slope organo-hippie tard when it comes to this issue; the language changes but the actual analysis remains staggeringly similar.
it is *always* someone else's fault.
in some cases, it is. but the other 99% is a simple case of mistaking need for want.
so i think about how one would go about socially engineering a mechanical reflex that understands the difference between need and want, as well as reinforcing that position morally. i'm drawing a blank, really.
ps. i think this explains the retarded protectionism of the ron paul supporters who say they want "free trade" but then argue against immigration and for protectionism. _________________

hilarious!
oh wait no it's not. |
Yeah, towing agencies and city officials can be pretty disgusting together.
Cambridge, MA is really suspect... they have this weekly "street cleaning", and while they do send a truck w/ loudspeakers around to wake everyone up, the amount you get charged for a tow seems pretty god damn suspicious. _________________ =/ \(<D)_/

alternate side parking is suspended for another five weeks or so by us, which is nice if you have a car and don't like moving it 4 days a week. _________________

Yes and no.
Kindness for the people who would otherwise forget and get toed.
Kind of annoying for everyone who dislikes being awoken by a blaring loudspeaker "STREETCLEANING! ALL CARS ON THE EVEN SIDE OF THE STREET WILL BE TAGGED AND TOWED! STREET CLEANING!" over and over and over and over and over.

I just lived though a month in Boston where every other day they would say "no parking on this street for [tomorrow] and [day after]" Apparently, they really wanted to keep their street repair options open... never know when they might decide to send out the crew! Kind of took the glamour out of finally getting a parking permit _________________ =/ \(<D)_/
