Also, I'm reading this Japanese account of the Sino-Japanese War called "Living Soldiers," transalted as, god knows why, as "Soldiers Alive." I suggest this book to you, mike. It's pretty sick. I keep thinking of this scene, when a few soldiers bayonet a Chinese girl for crying too much and all the CO can say when he sees the results is "Man, you guys sure know how to waste a good lay." Amazingly, there's no pity in any of this, the soldiers who behead Chinamen for the slightest infraction aren't treated as monsters, it's seen as being a mere consequence of war, regrettable but not really worth fussing over once all is said and done. Reminds of Ballard, actually, in Empire of the Sun, which also doesn't really pretend to care about the millions of dead Chinese. In fact, I can't think of any non-Chinese author, even the ones supposedly sympathetic to China, who have ever shown any sign of giving a shit about them. Reminds of most Western writing about Russia, actually.

Anyway, this book was written during the Sino-Japanese War and was not meant to denounce the war, or the soldiers waging it. Thus, it's shocking to see an author adopt such a strange, alien ethos. It's something that I've never seen anyone write a about war in such a way.

the repo folks in the city fall into two categories: the type you mentioned above (though it seems rare) and, well, repo guys.

there's a general dislike of the entire concept of the repo guy, which is understandable in one sense (it sucks to wake up to no car) but not so much in terms of not paying for stuff and expecting to get away with it.

They don't like getting charged for the repo either. Because the guy whose car gets repoed is going to have to foot the bill. It's more about hating the banks though in that case, at least from what experience I've seen.
