Bad news for Israelis who want to use their Wii Classic Controllers to play Tron Bonne!

Glovepie's readme file wrote:

If you try to run it in Israel before then, it will give you an error.

Rero, I haven't played those games. Which one should I start with? Some say Future Shock is better, others say Skynet is better. I watched a video on youtube, the outdoor bits look rad but the indoor bits look terrible.

Cycle write an article about Crusader and how it straddled the lines between the late 80s/early 90s niche games which thrived on gore as a gimmick and the late 90s-to-current day titles which really glorify violence and have gore as a "realism" feature. Also the sensible middle ground between slapstick gore (Mortal Kombat) and senseless gore (stuff like Postal and I think Soldier of Forture?). In Crusader, there were many ways for people to die, and that was both because it was so awesome and because there were, in fact, many ways to kill people. Like hijacking security robots a half-decade or so before Deus Ex.

Other tangents: whatever happened to isometric action games? Did the constant problem of control ultimately do them in or were they just another "victim" of the behind-the-hero third-person perspective that emerged with the N64 and dominated consoles and eventually PCs (through multiplatform titles)?

Also: RIP Origin Systems to the conqueror EA, RIP the hopes of a multiplayer version, and apparently it was part of the WIng Commander universe?

I mean, yeah, there's already a hardcore gaming 101 article about it, but yours might be what causes a guilty EA producer to revive the series in beautiful ahahahahahahaha urgh

It sounds like you'd rather write an article about the game D-I-A-S! Which I'd be happy toread since I haven't read anything about the Crusader games since the reviews. Coincedently, I watched a video of it in action on youtube last night because I've always been curious about it but never played it. It was fun watching people get set on fire!

Skynet is just more of the same which is a con but it has multiplayer which is a pro whilst Future Shock was a pretty original product which is a pro but has no multiplayer, which is a con. I'll continue writing about this in the appropriate thread.

I don't want to write articles. I am not an article writing person. I merely thought of a good old game and then thought of perspectives on it.

I absolutely hate writing articles and essays. I can write maybe three accurate sentences and have to crap out the rest.

the independent gaming source just launched an online database for independent games. there's a pretty unfortunate rating system; how do you really compare cave story to dwarf fortress? it seems like indie developers in particular should understand how meaningless ranking games is. still, this will become a very good resource.

Star Soldier R, along with a host of other wiiware titles, is out in Japan.

There, uh, isn't a traditional mode. Just the usual caravan two minute and five minute modes. Oh, and a you-know-who-inspired "jam the button" mode.

Yeah, but you're leaving out the parts that reveal the deft hand with the dialog and characterization:
Quote:
"Mama mia I thought we beat all the Subspace guys!" Mario yelled.
"Pika pika pi!"
Translation: Oh no, we have to fight them Mario!

In a surprise move World Reborn was released for free recently. It's a solid game with some good graphics so shoot-em-up liking people who are into GBA emulation or who have flash carts should give it a whirl even if the presence life bars in these types of games put you off.

what's that? i've got a new blog. the old one was all about heavily-edited criticism, which was fine when i had the time for it. now that i live in the fast lane, i want a place to drop quick posts. anyway, new blog is online, not much there yet.

Is new blog a superset of old blog?

I guess the old blog didn't seem that heavily edited to me, it just seemed minimal and very thoughtful, which actually might be a backhanded way of observing good editing. (I know I've been trying to cut down on how verbose I am online)

my livejournal is for personal stuff.

my old blog was for short essays.

this is for me to drop links, and maybe occasionally a paragraph or two. plus i've been meaning to relocate to the new name for a while now.

Speaking of names I see it reuses the name but not the URL of your former pixel art endeavor...

Though it doesn't work *quite* as well for me, 'cause I'm New England enough to say Aunt to rhyme w/ Font and not Can't

that's also what keeps me from getting bored of it. I think it might be a mistake to just keep to one subject on these things.

i actually rhyme both auntie and pixelante with font (or fonty i guess).

james harvey it's not about content but about format. anyway i'm not adhering to stick to any particular format with the new blog, which is what i did with the old blog (and probably caused me to outgrow it).

now that i have a place to put it, i've finally gone and wrote up my thoughts on masocore games. now i've got enough content to leave my blog for a little while. get all the cool people to link to my insightful analysis of this emerging trend.

Oh, I thought pixelante was kind of a slant rhyme for "vigilante"

Whoa! I was excited for this when it showed up on IC so long ago, and disappointed when it got canceled. This is totally awesome. (Unless it sucks, I haven't tried it yet.)

http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9472&Itemid=50&limit=1&limitstart=4

This is next-gen.biz's 'top 50 games of the 80's list'. And it is fucking stupid. This is what it said about the original Legend of Zelda:

Quote:
'Its success can instead be attributed to Shigeru Miyamoto's unparalleled knack for combining rich characterisation, narrative, and joyous adventuring. '

WHAT CHARACTERIZATION

Are the referring to the old man in the cave who say 'Dodongo dislikes smoke?' Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine has richer characterization!

WHAT NARRATIVE

The original Legend of Zelda is about as narrative-free as these types of games can get!

It's like the guys who write these articles have a set amount of terms to describe games, say 50, and they just reach for the ones that apply the best to each game. Actually trying to assess the specific appeal of each game, using his own words, is an alien concept to this schmuck.

Well, our idea was that people would have three months in which to begin and complete a game, but reading through the Terms and Conditions, and the Guidelines for Entry, that doesn't seem to be specified anywhere! I guess it's simply ensured, somewhat, by the need for entries to relate to the theme (ie. colour).

Also there is this bit:

19. The Entrant makes the following guarantees to the Promoter:-

(a) the game was made by the Entrant specifically for the competition;

So... make of that what you will. I don't know what it is you're working on at the moment, how long you've been working on it, how far you're into it, etc.

I think I ought to ask Dan and/or Christine, as they're the ones that hammered out the rules.

In any case, I hope you'll enter! Your games are very good, and since this is the first year, maybe you won't have so much competition? That's just a guess; we'll see how things turn out.

I, er, ought to do a proper plug.

Hey everybody, please enter our GAME MAKING COMPETITION; there are actual money prizes don't you know! Who likes money? I know I do! CLICKY CLICKY.

PS. Jeremy, I'm pretty sure that origin is in fact a reference.

wait, there's a theme?

honestly, i felt as though i read through the press release and didn't get any of these things. maybe it's just me.

my game actually does uses color in a pretty unusual way, but i can't say it's been made specifically for your competition.

Dess, I checked with Dan and Christine, and yes, your game would seem to be eligible. So hooray!

The FAQ has been updated accordingly.
