Dess, I think, and Cycle, maybe, and The Great Unwashed....maybe not fans of the recent stuff, but at least fans of the old, clunky, weird Exile games, right? And there's a lot of "let's make games hooray" people here, right?

Well, in case you haven't heard (it happened months ago but I don't think of us pay any attention to Vogel anymore), Blades of Exile - which lets you create scenarios and play through them - has been released as open-source....something. I don't really understand the licenses involved and stuff, but you can basically go here and make a number grinder when you're tired of Knytting (oh ho ho).

Anyways, just a heads up, maybe something to toy with when you're done with the current Exquisite Corpse.

I could never get into his post-exile stuff, but I really loved the Exile series, yeah. I even dicked around in Blades of Exile back on my Mac! I made the most ludciously bad scenarios, they were pretty hilarious.

Maybe I should take another shot now that I'm a little older and a little wiser.

Oh geez, I feel kind of stupid - I'm trying to create a new scenario now and it's bitching out errors at me. I get the feeling I've probably missed something really obvious somewhere that makes this less exciting then it looks like.

Hey, uh, tell me if you get a new scenario up and running and saved, okay?

i've never tried any of his stuff.

should i? the graphics are intensely ugly. which isn't the end of the world or anything, but it's been enough to make me eschew the download button.

To be perfectly honest, dhex, I don't think you'd find yourself overcoming the aesthetic and amateur nature enough to be able to enjoy these games. They're really "had to be there" games.

Anyways! In looking through all the stuff I should have looked through before I posted this topic, I realized what had to happen. Basically, you have to get the BLADBASE.EXS file and open it up in the scenario editor before starting a new scenario:

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/1/1401201/bladebases.rar

That contains the bladbase.exe from the demo (which is the original one, I believe), an alternative one that features a lot of changes and fixes (AlternativeBladeBase.zip) with a readme, and then a zip which has three bladbases...I believe they are the alternative one, the alternative one without any defined items, and the alternative one without any defined armor.

Man, I really wish I hadn't made this topic so hastily. Next I'm going to see if I can find the compiled version for Macs.

Oh man, thanks for the heads up Dais!* I always made scenarios for it back in the day on my Macintosh LCii but couldn't play them because I was, literally, too young to afford $25 US. Good times. Now I've lost them all, but man, awesome.

If only he'd release Blades of Avernum on such a license. Oh, Avernum. <3

*I'm quite touched you remember that I played these!

How many of these new scenarios will start you in a fort looking for the commander and kitting up with stolen pants?

Was the rpg by Mark Rein Hagen that never got to press jetpack-less?

Is the Blades community still going?

I remember it was quite strong in 2001 or 2002. Haven't looked into it since, though.

There are a few scenarios I remember being really quite good - in fact, as far as Blades goes, I'd call them "must plays" but I really don't recall their titles. Sad

There was one where a demon was imprisoned in a town and you were sent to kill it, I remember that much.

I was a beta tester for Blade of Exile. When it was released I had already played the piss out of the included scenarios and felt an obligation to try and do something with the editor. I made a horrible scenario and threw it violently into the wild. It was early enough that there wasn't much else out, so its "barely competent" made it look alright for awhile. Recently I found it reviewed on some Blades community site. Mostly "my god this really sucks."

I was fourteen or so when Blades was released. I've come to terms with the fact that everything I made anywhere when I was fourteen was (predictably) horrible, so it was mostly just amusing to see people going so far as to express disgust at what I had done.
