|
|
Inspired in part by Momus (imomus.livejounal.com). Let's see how many faux-earth-shattering statements we can make by simply substituting 'x' for a dearly-held concept of western culture. You have to qualify each statement. You don't neccessarily have to believe in what you're saying but it has to sound plausible. I'll start the ball rolling.
Originality is primarily a western conceit
In China it's possible to find western-style landscape and portrait paintings produced in a heavy industry setting, churning out 5000 Mona Lisas a day. There are no mavericks in the world of sumi-e painting. Manga artists are encouraged and expected to draw the same as the last guy, with innovation consisting purely of building on top of what the previous generation discovered and throwing out nothing. In eastern countries, art, like any craft or trade, is done for the people and not for the individual. Our idea that creativity and originality are intrinsically linked to one another is simply a product of our indivdualistic, capitalist mindset and not an essential truth. |

Back in Missouri we called it "e", and it was still a primarily western conceit. _________________ Signature:

Did you ever write that song entitled "Momus friended my Livejournal"?
Jarvey hams, you might be interested in Barkley, Shut Up And Jam: Gaiden. Specifically the save points. |

I simultaneously love/loathe Momus's idea that ideas and beliefs are to be worn like hats and thrown out when a newer, more attractive one comes along, which partly inpsired this thread.
Interesting fact! I'm on an album with Momus!
He didn't friend my Livejournal, though. |

dudes who wear scarves are inherently untrustworthy.
it's true! if there's some dick on the subway with his legs out in the aisle and looking annoyed anytime someone (ok me) kicks his legs out of the way, he's wearing a scarf. even in fall.
his wittle neck is so cwold! _________________

that's a trick question: there's no manhood to surrender there without filling out the proper forms in the Office of Testicular Fortitude and requisite tax stamps. (in case someone slips on a loose vas deferens and has to be pensioned for life.)
ha ha get it?
i don't know why the venn diagram for scarf wearing and total dickhole overlapsso much in new york city but it certainly fucking does. _________________

Yeah, I am inclined to go with Dracko. In Cleveland winters, scarves are just like gloves, tons of people wear them and nobody thinks a thing about it. |

but what does that have to do with scarves?
this is the mystery at play here.
not everyone here is a cockhole by any stretch, even during rush hours (though it doesn't help at all) - yet the scarf thing i've observed over the course of several years. also, the length of the scarf seems to come into play - the longer and more elaborate the scarf, the higher the likelihood of dickhole behavior.
perhaps this is a general issue of foppishness and the social signals involved. more work is required.
(this is secondary to the hilarious art kid with palestinian neckerchief thing, mind you, since that's just for our collective amusement.) _________________

That sounds really cool. I'm sort of imaging the Trachtenburg family here, though.

The Palestinian neckerchief have a good design, better than just a long floppy scarf that you have to keep adjusting. You don't have to be the sort of person who rejects everything a group of people has contributed to the world just because you aren't down with them in general. that would be like refusing to drink green tea because you aren't down with lolicon animes, which is to say it would be stupid. _________________ Signature:
