oh whatever! no game is too good for that. yes yes i know but they touched my twee little heart and the narration is good but c'mon it's a fucking puzzle game, not world peace or a particularly delicious chicken vindaloo.

man also if there were portable vagina makers the world would fall apart in two or three days. we'd be gone in a year.

MAYBE THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO APERTURE?

i just realized that last sentence made very little sense.

so what's on the borealis?
a single portal device?
a huge portal device? that portaled the ship out to the middle of nowhere?
GlaDOS?

oh man i hope its her.
she's still alive, you know.

that thought crossed my mind as well (i.e. glados is chillin', literally)

as long as she's not all shodan'd up and shit, it would be pretty excellente.

i think its very neat how they tied in the borealis with aperture the way they did.
if you read HL2's art book, there's a section in there about how there were originaly planning to have a fairly large chunk of the game take place in the borealis (it had that name even then), but that they eventually decided to concentrate on city 17 and its surrounding areas. the final game ended up being a big loop out of city 17, into the wasteland, and back to the city. a boat in the arctic was a bit out of the way.

its great how they brought it back and made it integral to the story.
EP3's story, atleast.

now i wonde,r how are they gonna get there?
all the events so far have pretty much happened in real time. back to back.
are we gonna teleport to boat? fly there?

oh also, if you play around with HAMMER, you can find all sorts of borealis props and meshes that werent used in the final game.

Hey, so like, because my wife kind of stole the TV (and HL2 from me)--and I've been messing around on my PC alot doing things with the magazine--I decided to give HL1 a whirl and... like, I think this game is completely fucking different than the PS2 version? I could be wrong, but like, it seems like I remember getting stuck in some bullshit swimming section in the sewers in the PS2 version. I don't remember these horrible jumping puzzles with boxes hanging in the air at all! Also, I want to say that the "training room" was integrated into the game itself (after the train ride) in the PS2 version.

Am I crazy?

i don't think glados would fit in half-life 2. i also don't think the player will be getting a portal gun in episode three, because of all the time it would take to retrain the player in using it, and because of all the ways it would challenge the developers to arbitrarily constrain their levels. it also might just not be feasible given the cost of rendering; they had to do a lot of black magic to get portal to move smoothly.

i'd imagine episode three gives the player some type of related but far less convenient portal device.

Like only the blue gun?

Anyways, I kind of see this going the other way around: Portal 2 merging further into the HL2 story line and becoming a sort of parallel.

lets gordon makes it to the boat, and he finds the device there.
i think the boat would be a closed-enough environment to allow for some portal puzzles. as opposed to white forest or city 15.
if all the portaling took place inside the boat, it could work.

I think adding the Portal gun in Half-Life 2 in any form whatsoever would be forced and less rewarding than people imagine it would be.

I keep reading that the controls in the 360 version kind of suck. Consensus! True or not!

eh they did it with the gravity gun. i could see it being used in a very limited fashion within the borealis perhaps.

i have faith that it will at least be pretty neat. we'll know more in what 2009?

Yeah, but that's just it: Why even bother if it's going to be limited? It wouldn't live up to the concept that only works in something akin to Portal's environment. I don't relish the idea, in any case. I don't feel it would be appropriate.

There was a clear reason they made sure that didn't overstay its welcome.

I'm sure they could do the same thing with the portal gun. Just think if Portal were something inside of HL2.

Go with me here: you have the start something like HL2 where you're running and rather than getting saved at the end of the chase you get captured and then put into the portal setting? EH?!

Also, I agree, placing the Portal gun along with the other weapons in HL2 would ruin it.

You could, but it'd be forced: I understand that they wanted to somewhat relate both universes with the few odd winks here and there, but that goes beyond subtlety and would render the entire thing garish: They're completely different moods aiming for completely different things.

Eh? I think the controls work just fine. The rotation speed's a little too slow by default, but you can change that in the options screen without any problem.

OH! I almost forgot: driving sucks. Then again, I hear that's the same with the PC too!

oh yeah, driving is terrible. so's carefully placing / manipulating objects with the gravity gun.

i have no idea if these are any better in the pc version. the driving is notably improved in episode one.

in the games i am playing thread, i wrote:
i just finished the xbox 360 version of half-life 2. disappointments: no achievement called "outbreak", no achievement called "if you see doctor breen, tell him i said fuck you!"

i might replay episode one with commentary next. i don't know how long it will be before i'm up to replaying episode two.

i enjoyed the commentary on team fortress 2. i think i would appreciate invulnerability in commentary mode in the games where they actually shoot at you.

Episode Three will likely have an achievement called "Get Busy With Alyx" and will involve a lot of valve turning and crank turning puzzles.

i think the key to driving, at least on the pc, is to never turn while accelerating at any real speed. i found that to be the key to the boat in the first and all the driving in the rest.

I never had any troubles with the driving whatsoever, except when I engaged the Turbo function at times, and that made sense to me. What issues are you guys having?

the issue is that the car gets stuck on every stupid little thing, and then i need to get out of the car and bump it around gracelessly in order to be able to drive it again. which totally wrecks the momentum of driving.

at least, that's my issue with it.

The car has been sweet from start to finish for me, except when I'd over-eagerly try to run down a Hunter and wedge the car gracelessly into a tree. Embarassing.

I get exceptionally disoriented when shooting and driving. On top of that, there's quite a few tunnels and jumps that are only slightly wider than the vehicle you're in making me bump into lots of walls and redo a few jumps. I mean, I can do it (I got through the helicopter sequence with the fan boat in my first try on hard this time through) I'd just rather have a gas and break/reverse button.

For all of the Portal love... Here is something that might interest you guys:

Basically, someone figured out how to get the portal gun into Half-Life 2.

For instance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKg3TUPQ8Sg

(the tutorial to make it happen:
http://www.primotechnology.com/2007/10/17/half-life-2-portal/ )

i played through episode one with commentary. i wish, first, that game and dialogue volume would drop while a piece of commentary is playing, and second that the commentary would take control of the camera more often and show me things. these scenes are all very neat and i wish there were more of them.

http://aperturescience.com/

Help is as far as I've gotten. I want to see how long I can last without looking for any resources online. But the relay from game to site is really nonexistent, and I don't have a clue what could possibly tie them together.

In another words: a fun challenge, if only a diversion..
