So: Mother 3 is a great game with a lot of powerful moments which may be lessened by having them spoiled ahead of time. Super Smash Bros. Brawl will include spoilers for Mother 3. This presents a problem.

The Mother 3 translation project would present a solution, except it appears they won't be complete with their translation patch in time for Brawl's release.

Because of this, today they announced that they're releasing a mini-patch which will translate menus, items, descriptions, names, etc. This will NOT translate any of the plot. If you're afraid of spoilers (and you should be, if you haven't played this yet) you should grab this patch and use the story translation on GameFAQs in conjunction with it.

This game is amazing, and I think you should play it.

because so few western players have finished this game yet, i think any discussion of the game's plot should take place behind spoiler colors.

I'm not too far in (I started playing a legit copy last week), but Flint's reaction to his wife's death and the way the game handled it thoroughly impressed me.

yeah, i consider mother 3 to be what a real mature game looks like. not a game that has guns and tits that yell "fuck".

i spent most of yesterday trying to properly apply the halfway patch to my save-in-progress on my flashcart.

my save was up to that point, right at the beginning of chapter 4.

i ended up watching that same heartbreaking scene like five times to make sure the rom was now saving correctly.

i like that i have to wait until i get home each night to play this game because i need to have my laptop on and in front of me to decode the dialog.

Appropriately enough, today's Brawl Blog update announces that Lucas is a playable character.

This means either Ness isn't in the game or he's an "extra" character like Dr. Mario from Melee.

I love that the creators of Smash Bros. hold Ness and Lucas with as much regard as the likes of Snake, Mario, Kirby, etc.

i spent a few nice hours tonight lying in bed, listening to the music in the mother 3 music player with a gameboy micro and headphones.

So would you guys who played through with the GameFAQS translation say you still enjoyed the game?

The only thing that's been stopping me from playing Mother 3 is that I think that playing through the game while stopping periodically to read what everyone just said, might detract from the overall experience.

Another question, how in depth is that translation guide? Does it tell you what normal townspeople say, or just what the important, story affecting people say?

i think i'm losing a little playing it this way, and my reason for saying so has a direct bearing on your second question: regular townsperson dialog is blocked off under an "NPC text" heading for each area, and so typically i just end up reading this block and running through the area.

that said, i'm on chapter seven of eight - which constitutes, as far as i can gather, about a third of the game - and i love it dearly.

Alright, that's good. Admittedly, I'm a little weird with my games, and I'm just a little worried it'll lose some of its impact if I just go through a section of dialog, see an awesome event, and then go back and read what was said.

I may just be too nit-picky to play it through while reading a translation.

I'm fine for holding out on Brawl until I get to play this. I'll just avoid trophies, and not go through the story mode. Apparently there's some rumors going around in the internets that a Mother 3 spoiler occurs in the SSBB story mode. So, maybe I'll just wait it out.

personally, i play it with the translation open in front of me, and try to match up what i'm doing more or less exactly with the corresponding dialog - except, like i said, with the blocks of NPC text. battles are quite enjoyable with the current patch, though!

Love this game; even having to use a translation FAQ didn't bother me too much. I got stuck on a tricky part in Chapter Seven, but I should pick it up again.

Great details/moments in gaming (spoilered for safety's sake):

-The way Duster walks and runs. Because of his leg, you see.

-That aforementioned heartbreak scene made me tear up...

-"You felt a warm feeling in your heart!"

-Seeing the backs of enemies you've snuck up on.

-Scoring your first sixteen-hit combo and hearing an audience of people clap and cheer.

-Opening presents and having weird stuff pop out.

There's a ton of other little moments in this game; it's full of them. The whole game feels like a big hug in the form of an RPG.

there's also the last chapter, where the game hugs you with such zeal that it takes you a few moments to realize it is actually strangling you.

i was hoping to wait it out for the inevitable patch, but i have no intention of maintaining an internet embargo for however long it takes to come out . i usually don't care so much but this is one of the few cases where i absolutely do not want anything about this game ruined for me.

i think my best option is getting some kind of flashcart and playing with the partial patch and a story translation, but have no idea where to buy a flash cart or what type to look for. can anyone give me some advice?

So I guess the Mother 3 translation team has a little more time left to finish up the translation before Brawl Very Happy.

That's what Mother 3 might look like if Iwata had asked Itoi to make it for the Wii instead of the GBA.

Smash Bros. Dojo is like my favorite blog on the internet. I love the way it's worded.

Quote:
Also, a monster known as the "Ultimate Chimera" appears on this stage.

The-there it is!

If this guy sinks his teeth into you, it will launch you off in one blow. It’s pretty much certain that if you get hit, you’ll lose a life. But there’s nothing you can do. I mean, it IS the Ultimate Chimera.

Yeah, it's a great example of cultural differences between Japan and America I think--just the wording, really. What's acceptable, what is grammatical correct but ends up sounding awkward...the translations on the site are good, but they are not "culturally adjusted" so it's interesting.

If I had enough content to warrant daily updates, I would seriously consider writing my blog in the style of Smash Bros. Dojo.

"Wh-what??"

Today's Peach updates was great. "Somehow, Princess Peach always seems go at her own pace. Her Final Smash will lure you into her world." She sounds like my kind of girl.

"The flowers bloom. The peaches pour down. Yes. It’s so elegant."
