Have you ever had to use SPSS? I was just told "It's simple!" by the professor, and that was it. I go in today to find one of the blandest interfaces - circa 1992 - hiding a database program with analysis features hidden in all kinds of regular and sub menus. I have three data sets to enter, which I did, but beyond that - how to do anything else - gave me flashbacks to my DOS days. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

i have indeed used spss. once you get the hang of it things go pretty smoothly until you get into crazyland territory.
the key, outside of using a tutorial to start (which i highly recommend) is figuring out how you're going to lay out and separate your variables, and what you're going to be testing for in terms of relationships.
edit: i am going to be sending you a review tonight for stalker. _________________

Yeah, I tried going through them but about 10 screens in the university's network blocked the content - something about ActiveX. So now I'm confused as to how to get results from 3 columns of data.
Great! Looking forward to it. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

ryan - that frucking sucks. i assume it's running the app from a network drive? i can send you my student version of spss if you're going to be encoding less than 50 separate variable sets. _________________

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm dropping the class. It turns out that it's so tight of a schedule that the 3 or so days I'll need after having my bottom wisdom teeth removed will put me too far behind. Oh, summer classes! You can be so much fun! _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

from a soon to be a doctor type i know, i do not vouch for the veracity of this story but it is funny:
Quote: | With that, here's a little bit of Ob/Gyn Arcana for ya'.
A lady, let's call her X, who's getting close to delivery comes in for pre-term contractions. When the doctors see X, they realize she's not going into labor, but they see that even at this late date she's still having sex as evidence by her vagina still having a bit of...products of fornication.
The doctors speak to that X, asking hasn't this lady been told at pre-natal care not to have sex at this late a date? X replies she has, but that she won't stop having sex. The doctors are astonished and press her to stop having sex but X still won't agree to stop having sex. Finally they ask her why she still wants to have sex at this late a date.
X replies, "Well how's my baby gonna eat?" |

These days I'm pretty happy just to read that nobody got killed. Or shot. Or jailed for shooting someone who's breaking into their house. _________________

Lifecycle of Wikipedia
1. An idea
2. Pretty good idea
3. Good idea with ok execution
4. It seemed like a good idea at the time
5. Why did anyone think this was a good idea
6. If you have better idea why don't you try to compete, and no fair using words like externality |

I couldn't get Ultima 7 to calm down when I played it - the controls are too jittery. I think I need to mess with the settings some more. A friend of mine that absolutely loves the series was incapable of understanding how anything could lessen one's enjoyment of 7. I think a fist could come out of his monitor and punch him in the balls and he would still love it.
What kind of industry are you most interested in? I see graphic design and public relations, is there one you focus on more? I get job offers or questions for positions that I can't fill/don't have anyone in mind at the time, so if it's something in gaming I can pass your name along. Are you willing to relocate? I recently got a call from an EA recruiter wanting someone to head up EA/Mythic and a senior PR manager for Spore, but the only PR folk I knew at the time that weren't with a firm were happy on their own (with one or two medium clients being all they needed). _________________ Come to me, Mordel. sadly, i cannot relocate for at least another 2.5 years, until the wife finishes the phd.
my experience is more on the marketing/design side of things - as well as special events - but i'd like to move closer to the pr side of things. i've done media calls, babysitting camera crews, sitting in on shoots and some television training sessions for our docs, but not a whole lot of it. and crisis communications stuff, which i actually enjoy quite a bit. but i don't have a rolodex filled with contacts on that side of things, which is obstacle #1 in this case.
i mean, i believe i would be helpful at the very least for a game company in terms of media handling and helping get the word out there, but that doesn't mean they would necessarily agree.
oh i'm going to reedit the stalker thing and get it back to you this afternoon. _________________

Do you want me to see if there are any openings in New York?
I can't move for about 4 years. I have 1.5 left on my MBA and then my girlfriend is getting her masters in library science (2 years) after I finish mine. I would've loved to have tried out Virginia for a while. Up until one of our more recent projects, I didn't think I had enough management experience to handle myself, but I think I could now go at least a month or two before being overwhelmed. Thanks, Russia!

no i'd never even heard of it until i googled it. myspace for professionals?
i have a membership to media bistro, which has given me a few jobs to apply for, but i've mostly been disappointed with their focus (which is largely freelance magazine writers who want to make it to the bigger leagues).
i did apply for a communications asst. director job at a local law school, but i don't know if i'll get that or if the money will be good or whatever. hopefully, of course, but who knows. _________________

There are some people who do get into the community aspect of LinkedIn, but most people just use it as a handy filter. We now work with 3 companies because of LinkedIn. One contact from a then current client allowed a message to go through her to one, but the other two were essentially cold calls using the system. It's very handy.
I asked the recruiter if positions are still open, and if there are any in your area, so I'll let you know how that goes. And it's actually how she got in touch with me - found me through common connections in LinkedIn. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

i'm all for pointing out that collectivism is just another term for theft and slaughter, but why the living fuck are they building this thing in DC?
i had a dream once that i was on the board of directors for a history of slavery museum to be built in alabama. i've never been to alabama but the group of 20 or so people drank a lot of lemonade (i hate lemonade) and were all wearing white linen suits and dresses. it descended into a hellhole of screaming and corncob pipe tossing (don't ask) over whether ot include slavery in other places etc etc and the usual stuff.
still, i think it would be a worthwhile project in dc. more worthwhile than a victims of communism memorial. don't get me wrong, nothing has destroyed more lives in human history in such a short period of time than state communism, but it didn't happen here. at least slavery would be historically relevant, beyond the socio-political cues it would send out.
it would probably also rekindle the bombastic - if ultimately silly - reparations "debate." (you cannot win them all)
but back on point: all of my dreams are stupid. i had one the other day where i had to help a harem do its taxes. one, that's stupid because why would the harem pay taxes? and two, its not like i was all slathered in the naked ladyness, but instead dealt with some twerp who was trying to convince me that pillows should be written off as a business expense. why the fuck can't i even get some side boob in my dreams? _________________

here's a wacky one from the reason archives. a little bit too polemical in parts for my tastes, but otherwise interesting.
Quote: | What does Nichols believe? He believes that culture is genetically determined, and that blacks, Hispanics, and descendants of non-Jewish Middle-Eastern tribes place their "highest value" on "interpersonal relationships." In Africa, women are the equal of men. Whites were altered permanently by the Ice Age. They value objects highly, not people. That is why white men commit suicide so frequently when they are downsized. |

first off spong should remove that background forever.
secondly, whatevs. the AMA also thinks gun crimes are a public health issue.
other than that, whatever form of hillarycare we're going to get in the next ten years or so will, in another 20, be very topheavy with a lot of RSI-related illnesses. (one of the many reasons i gotta get my ass into a management position)
unrelated: an ad i designed will be going into new york magazine (well, a supplement) so hoo-ray for me. _________________
