BANNER UPDATE!

We're up to 725!

I added a lot this time and I wasn't amazingly careful, so if you run into a broken banner link please let me know ASAP! Also, this is ApM's Cue to update the Banner Link Identifier.

Because the banner update happened before the site redesign, and some kind soul besides me runs the GreaseMonkey script, the Banner Identifier has updated itself!

With the site redesign, though, I will have to update the GreaseMonkey script.

Okay guys, the GreaseMonkey script is updated. Click this link to update yourself.

People have been busy identifying broken links on the ol' Banner Identifier! Banners 551, 600, 649, and 652 are all broken, Wes.

hey apm the banner identifier is just marvellous. However, (I don't know if this is just a problem for me) banners with apostrophes in the title show up said apostrophes as & #039; in the tooltip (without the space between the & and #).

i changed

banner.title = response.responseText;

to

banner.title = response.responseText.replace("& #039;","'");

(again, without the space)

which fixed it. Just thought you'd want the heads up, in case it is a bug for everyone.

I noticed this, but it never bothered me enough to do anything about it. But just now I looked at it, and it was seriously just a matter of changing ENT_QUOTES to ENT_NOQUOTES on the server side.

So, yeah, apostrophes and quotes are fixed.

It's a good story! It might get turned into an article. I'll try to keep it short.

As some of you might know, my employer is currently floating around on the International Space Station. Needless to say, I find this both awesome and totally surreal.

Anyway, there are many fantastic cosmonaut traditions that he wrote about participating in on his blog (including stopping the bus midway to the rocket to pee on the tires, just like Yuri Gagurin did). One of these traditions is to watch the 60s Soviet cult classic film, The White Sun of the Desert.

If you click on that Wikipedia link, you may notice a throwaway line in there about there being a computer game adaptation of the film.

I killed two days scouring the Internet for it. (Google totally knows the Russian translation of "warez", if you were ever curious.) Several things gave me trouble. The first was that Russian copyright law is a lot stricter about things that were created by Russians. The second was that, despite appearances, this was a relatively recent production (2004), so any hopes of being able to find some Russian abandonware site proudly hosting it were pretty much dashed. Regardless, in the process I found many Russian game review sites with lots of awesome screenshots, which I dutifully turned into awesome banners.

I totally found it on eMule eventually, and it finally finished downloading last night. Yarr!

Oh, hell yes. The first scene in the game is this:

But holy shit does Google ever choke on the walkthrough. Thus far, figuring out what the walkthrough says has been nearly as difficult as figuring out what the hell is going on in the game.

It didn't install right and the videos aren't playing in-game, which is a shame because they're awesome. Here, allow me to demonstrate with a banner-sized still:

EDIT! Here's a nice big close-up. This motherfucker is so my new desktop background.

That's really cool. I love that, spending hours going from one link / oblique reference / name-drop to another, furiously ctrl-T'ing and middle clicking, to come up with a previously unknown nugget. Looks like you struck russian adventure gold.
