For example:

Earth Defense Force 2017
Cooking Mama: Cook Off
Lost In Blue 2
Virtua Tennis 3
Armored Core 4
Kororinpa
Wing Island
Ninja Turtles

Stalker came out too, but it looks pretty good actually, so it's being excluded from this list. Is anyone picking any of them up? I'm looking at Earth Defense Force myself, but I might hold out until I'm done with God of War 2 first.

I picked up Stalker!

The original plan was to pick-up Excitetruck and Koroinpa, but then Stalker came out. I'll probably get Kororinpa anyway, but you can rent it from the video store down the street so I'll probably try it first. We have the original box art! suks 2 b usa.

Wait, Wing Island?! And reviews say it's terrible, crap! I was really looking forward to that one.

I got STALKER, which I'm super excited about. I also got Lost in Blue 2 (the only review for that's bad too, but it's a shitty review, so we'll see), and may eventually end up with Puzzle Quest DS.

More exciting to me this week are new Basil Kirchin, Panda Bear and Ted Leo albums, plus the Children of Men DVD.

I might be able to pick up STALKER in a couple of months, if there's nothing better out by then. I was going to order the last few computer parts I need very shortly, actually, but it looks like I'm moving to Seattle! So the new computer is sort of on the backburner for just a bit longer. I could probably use this time to catch up with a few console games...

Oh, shit, Children of Men on DVD! I'd almost forgotten. That is exciting.

How much is Earth Defense Force? I can see myself picking it up if it's like under $30 or something like that.

edit-It's actually $40 even. Which is about $20 cheaper than most new 360 games. I'm kind of torn though, as it's still a bit too much for me. What are the chances of it becoming hard to find down the road?

For some reason this game is getting a lot of love at some places. I can't really see why. It came so close after Alien Shooter: Vengeance that it feels like its 3D, equally unpolished cousin. Ten levels? Okay, sure, they keep ramping up and I can see how you could amass an impressive arsenal and see some wild stuff, but twenty would be pushing it, at fifty I think I'm going to launch the game into the woods behind my house.

(One of the ten phrases that repeated over and over)!

A few dozen bugs get mowed down, accompanied with significant frame dips

Repeat: Five Hundred Thousand times.

Tell me why it's not! I just assumed the series hadn't changed much since the first Dreamcast version (which I played the crap out of). I mean, it's a tennis game that looked and played pretty much as good as I'd ever want it to seven years ago. Is there anything worthwhile about the new one?

I'll admit I'm also somewhat interested in Kororinpa, but I'm not $40 interested. And I'm definitely not $50 interested in Cooking Mama. It's insane that they're charging that for what is essentially a remake of a $20 DS game.

This week already? And I was hoping to save some money.

P.S. This is a great excuse for those of you who haven't seen it yet to rent it, watch it, and talk about how it is stylistically similar to Gears of War (and, apparently, Half-Life 2, but I can't personally vouch for that one).

I played the PC demo of puzzle quest. It made me want to barf. In the sense that it's a really boring RPG, and all the battles are resolved by playing a really boring puzzle game. Maybe it gets better!

I got Earth Defense Force yesterday, and, surprise, surprise, it's pretty average!

The presentation is about what I expected, and killin' stuff is pretty fun, but the pacing on some levels is way off. They often ask you to run through fields of nothingness for minutes at a time, then fight giant ants for a few minutes, then run through more fields of nothingness until you run into more ants. There's not enough consideration for player psychology.

It'd probably be fun in 2 player though.

I found this which seems pretty awesome:
Quote:
Virtua Tennis TV is a virtual television channel available only on the Xbox 360 version of the game that allows the gamers to watch/study matches played on Xbox Live. There are three options: live games (games played "in real time" on XBL), highlights (video clips of the best games) and all star channel (so that you can 'track' and 'watch' the games of some of the greatest players). The somehow overlooked Virtua Tennis TV confirms that videogames are becoming more and more of a spectator sport as Stanford University's Henry Lowood has argued for a long time.

Yeah, I'm hoping that VF5 360 has the VF TV stuff from the arcade. Totally awesome, either way. I think.

Virtua Tennis 3 just feels weird. Im not really sure though, have not played one sicne the first on DC. But with three is felt really stiff, and your character will ALWAYS dive for shot. It just does not feel as electric as VT1.

Agreed. I just tried the demo a few minutes ago and I'm not feeling it. Virtua Tennis 1 was damn near perfect, so any changes are bound to lead to disappointment, and there's something just a tiny bit off here.

so am i really the first person to play kororinpa? it is fabulous. it has a very laid-back, "let's walk in the park" charm, which the giant red and purple "MARBLE MANIA" block letters jar with horribly.

i was originally interested in the game because i heard it compared to cameltry, but it doesn't have the pace of an arcade title. it's more relaxed, but it's still viciously tricky, and requires much more mechanical skill than anything i've played on the wii yet. don't use the wrist strap - it doesn't allow for the level of manueverablity that this game requires. and as cute as the piggie and cat are, i recommend switching to a "normal" ball as soon as one's available.

it wasn't until i reached the "big apple" stage - twenty-five stages in - that i realized how brilliant the game is. it is the super mario galaxy to monkey ball's super mario 64.

and i unlocked the star soldier theme as background music.

(thread title edited to reflect impressions.)

i'm really speaking in terms of opening up the level design into real 3d - super mario galaxy has you running around planets in 3d space, kororinpa has you rotating giant apples 360 degrees as your marble moves around them. it takes the original premise and explodes it from a relatively flat world into an unquestionably 3d one.
