sexism update from gdc: koji igarashi, when asked whether he would consider making a castlevania game more in the vein of earlier episodes in the series (by andrew toups!), he said the metrovania games are easier because even women can play them! aside from andy, the entire question and answer session was people lined up to slather praise on igarashi. one person said "thank you for making vampires cool" (did he think he was speaking to anne rice?). another said "thank you for castlevania", as though igarashi was wholly responsible for it.

suda51 gave a presentation called "punk is not dead". he urged indy developers to sign contracts, though.

and i finally got to play castle crashers. it plays pretty well! there's also some thunder fox.

So I thought of something that was pretty funny that happened on Matt's last day here. He was telling me that he might get a PS3 from his mom for his birthday since he doesn't want to buy one but does want one. We had this conversation:

Nana: What games are you going to get?
ShaperMC: ...
Nana: There's LittleBigPlanet this fall but until then...
ShaperMC: SHIT DON'T ASK ME THAT. NOW I DON'T WANT ONE!

Virtua Fighter 5 is like the only thing it has going for me.

i was kind of stunned that people said they were willing to buy a ps3 for littlebigplanet. i sort of wonder if they still do, now that they've had time to sit and think about it.

i mean, it's pretty much every physics game on the internet, with prettiness and a little bit of animal crossing.

Given the past few hardware cycles, I know that I will get a PS3 either sooner or later.

Matt brought up a good point in that with the EU release of the PS3, we're seeing Sony dropping the Emotion Engine chip to cut costs, and so if you care about backwards compatibility, you might wnat to get a PS3 before they drop it from the US/Japanese releases as well. And since one of the main reasons I'm interested in getting a (Japanese) PS3 is to play Japanese PS2 games, that does matter.

Yeah, I expect to own a PS3 at some point. The SixAxis idea is brutually stupid and the initial price is very off-putting; that said, after seeing F1 running on it a couple weeks ago, I'm pretty impressed with even the early capabilities of the machine. I have a feeling that MGS4 is going to be another MGS2 in terms of how jaw-droppingly nice a game can look.

I keep thinking of random GDC anecdotes.

After shaking hands with Jeff Minter...
Dess: I am never washing this hand.... okay I am washing this hand again because he never bathes.

After interviewing Trip Hawkins...
ShaperMC: I just interviewed Trip Hawkins!
Nana: Did you get anything you can use?
ShaperMC; Not a damn thing!

Oh, Nana, I meant to thank your for this thread and your entries specifically. It was the best coverage of the conference I found on the interenet.

So thanks!
