(formerly "The Soda Thread")
Shaper and I went to BevMo! today and picked up a number of bottles of obscure and strange looking soda. We're going to be drinking them and posting our thoughts in this thread (liveblogging, as the kids these days are calling it [okay, well that is only me]).
Scale used to rate these sodas:
1 - Would never buy again
2 - Would drink at someone's house if they had it but would not purchase
3 - Would buy again if in a store.
4 - ZOMG MUST HAVE MORE
Feel free to play along at home!
And you'll notice the name of this was "The Soda Thread" and not "The Pop Thread" or "The Coke Thread" (although there may be a thread about cocaine later. おたのしみ!!!) _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people

Boylan's Birch Beer
Intial thoughts
ShaperMC: Its like a cola.
Nana: It's like a root beer.
ShaperMC: It's like a root beery ... cola.
Later thoughts
It's definitely a mix of root beer and cola, not too much spice for a root beer in any event.

Just cover all the bases at once and call this the carbonated beverage thread. Or the soft drink thread. No, the first one is better, it sounds more smarter. _________________

AJ Stephan's Jamaican Style Ginger Beer
Intial thoughts
Nana: It's very light colored.
ShaperMC; The one in the shit brown bottle?
Nana: Yeah, it almost looks like urine.
Nana: Oh god this one smells strong.
ShaperMC: Oh my god, it smells like ginger at a sushi restaurant. Like pickled ginger.
ShaperMC: It almost has a taste like.... OH That's spicy. It's like pickled ginger soaked in 7-Up.
Later thoughts
We're not finishing this, it is too spicy. Like being kicked in the back of the throat.
Edit: Shaper tried another big swig before I dumped it and said "OH DEAR JESUS HOW DOES IT BURN THAT BAD?"

Oh man, I gotta go pick up some of that stuff. Seriously, I'm about to jump in my car and burn rubber down to BevMo. Actually spicy ginger beer? Oh baby I'm coming home.
PS: I endorse this situation. One of my favorite zines was my friend's that had a theme each issue, one month it was "Orange" and the centerpiece was a 5-person panel review of 30 different orange-based drinks. |

I like that Boylans stuff. They have it at the best burrito place in Toronto, and I often like to get a random bottle of Boylans with my extra spicy yam and chicken burrito.
Also, I enjoy mad fuckin' spicy ginger beer. Admittedly Canadians like to drink ginger 'ale' more, which barely tastes of anything at all, but I don't mind that either. _________________ aerisdead |

Dr. Brown's Cel Ray Celery Soda
Intial thoughts
Nana: It doesn't smell bad.
ShaperMC; This doesn't taste very good.
Nana: It tastes like something that soda should not be made out of.
ShaperMC: It tastes like something familiar. But that may have been stale campground water or something.
Later thoughts
ShaperMC: It tastes like a ginger ale...
Nana: That's flat?
ShaperMC: Well, like really sulfurous water was used to make it.
ShaperMC: There's definitely a flavor in here that i should recognize but I don't, because it's mixed with.... strange.

Pangle Helmers Sparkling Hot Gingerale
Intial thoughts
Nana: It looks a lot better.
ShaperMC: It isn't clear.
*sticks nose in glass*
ShaperMC: OH MY GOD.
Nana: Is it really that bad?
*sticks nose in glass*
Nana: I don't... OH THERE IT IS. OH GOD. The smell is so thick and it hits you.
ShaperMC: It's burning my entire mouth and my throat.
Nana: I don't feel the burn in my mouth so much.
Later thoughts
ShaperMC: It's a very good gingerale that burns like tobasco sauce. The other one burned my throat, this burns my entire mouth and throat
Nana: Yeah, I like the flavor and the burn is nice. Like vodka without the alcohol.
Protip: Scratchmonkey, you would like this soda,

Moxie Original Elixir
Intial thoughts
Disclosure: Nana has tried this beverage before. Therefore for the purposes of a first taste test, only ShaperMC's comments will be posted.
ShaperMC: HOLY WOW WA WOW ZA. My mouth was not expecting that.
ShaperMC; This doesn't taste very good.
Later thoughts
ShaperMC: No wait, I'm liking this now. It has a very mediciney taste, so i guess the packaging is true.
ShaperMC: I don't know what I was expecting but that original taste was just mind-blowingly wrong.

Tip: It's very anise-y! And yeah, the first sip is really bad-tasting and then it really grows on you.
Then again, you both hated on the Cel-Ray, so who knows what's wrong with you. |

DOA
Intial thoughts
Nana: It may smell like ginger, but that might be residue from the last few sodas. It's kind of bitter.
ShaperMC: It's very sweet, kind of bitter, reminds me of shock tarts in liquid form.

Baron's Ginseng Ginger Ale
Intial thoughts
ShaperMC: This smells safe.
Nana: This is sort of anti-climatic.
ShaperMC: I like this. It has a good flavor.
Nana: Yeah, it's not too much ginseng, but maybe I'm used to more now.
Later thoughts
ShaperMC: It has a good flavor. I like this.
Nana: I dunno, it isn't doing much for me.

I had a great beverage on Sunday at near Washington, D.C. It was at a frozen custard shop. I ordered a meerwasser (never having heard of it before) and was treated to some Wisconsin-made ginger ale poured on top of raspberry sorbet. Y'all have got to taste it. I'll try to find the company's name. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

I'm going to guess it's Sprecher as that's the only brand I know of that is sold outside of Wisconsin. It's really good, although people from Wisconsin will tell you it's crap because they are over-exposed to the stuff. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |
