I just started Twilight Princess for a second play-through, and I named myself "obviosly" (the correct spelling is too long) just to see how it changes NPC dialogue.

e.g. "You'd better try and help her, obviosly!"

Once in Ocarina of Time, I used the name "Up next," so people would say things like, "Up next, why not visit Saria?"

Anybody do this?

In online games, you see things like "your dad," i.e. "you have been killed by your dad" all the time. Good names for this purpose:

Mother
God
circumstances
ebb tide of colonialism

etc.

When I played FFVII I named Cloud 'fag' and Tifa 'that slag'. e.g. 'Hey fag, Mr. T and I are going to meet up in that slag's bar later on.'

Anyone who names Link anything other than Link on their first play-through is crazy.

In Fallout games I like to use "Bitch" and "asshole".

Military acronyms are good, too: "Do you think you can withstand the enemy onslaught COMBALTAP?"

A friend of mine and I used to do this in Civilization 1. We'd call all of the towns stuff like, "my penis" and "my vagina," so that the game would occasionally give awesome messages like, "civil unrest in my penis," and "women's suffrage in my urethra." It was amazing.

I named Link THIEF and the horse HORSE. I think this was the best thing to do.

In Animal Crossing I named my town Dublin and my character J. Joyce. I regret this.

I do not regret telling some of the animals that 'queef' is a really cool expression to use in conversation.

When I played through Chrono Cross, I named the unnamed girl "Schala" or whatever her name is actually supposed to be as someone I knew told me about her.

Halfway through the game when they figure out what her real name is, I was rather confused.

"Schala, you are not Schala but you are Schala!"

I like "wild animals" or "a bear" for multiplayer games. "So and so was killed by wild animals."

If you want to mess up game dialogue, simply a single question or exclamation mark does wonders.

Great multiplayer naming ideas:

Choose a normal name, but mis-spell it to piss off anal-retentive opponents (like me):

Me and a couple friends once played a game of Counter-Strike against a man we know only as The Jascal. We didn't think too much of the name until we realised The Jascal was a sniper and wrote "This is the Day of the Jascal" in the public chat box once a match was over. This was too much for our tiny, 17-year old minds, so we did the only thing we could think of:

We named ourselves after The Jascal. My friend was "Day of the Jascal" and I was "The Jascal Never Dies." We then proceeded to terrorize The Jascal until he/she quit the server.

If you're ever feel like fucking with your opponents, give one of these a try. Totally immature, but great fun.

On another note, my default online nickname for the longest time was perseussux, which for some reason led people on games to assume that I was a newbie. Suffice to say, they were always pretty disappointed that I wasn't (except for that one time where I was!).

Yeah.

I name most of my RPG characters Link, though.

The last game I got creative with names was Bionic Commando for GBC. I beat the game with Cmdr. DAMMIT and Cmdr. HEY

I don't even want to tell you all about my naming scheme for Pokemon Yellow. I'll just say that I still have the guide book with all the names written in and reading through it I rolled my eyes at myself. I'll just say that bitch may be the most gentle name in there.

Also, I changed one characters name to "Nigga" in FFVII. I'll let you guess which. Also, one of the banners for the forum is from someone I know who named everyone in FFVII an emoicon.

i don't remember who did this, but i thought it was pretty smart: in a j-rpg where your party members all walk in line after the party leader, call the leader Vic Viper and every other character Option.

also, naming Link Zelda in the first game was pretty awkward.

It'd be neat if instead of starting a second quest mode it just sat you in a dark room and had you wait around to be rescued.

I thought I was the only one to use that particular expletive.

Also I had a friend who would name his character "a girl" in halo so it would say "you were killed by a girl". juvenile, yes, but I like it too.

Whenever I played Actraiser I named my angel "crapola" and the game would call him "Sir Crapola". It was pretty great.

Man you guys probably don't even know what crapola is.

Link? I keep thinking of that detective show with the chimpanzees dreesed up in human clothes.

As for CMDRs Dammit and Hey, have you heard the story of shutup and trouble?

In elementary school there was a "conduct and manners" fill-in-the-blank workbook that my brother and I filled in with every swear word we could think of or make up.
My mother still has it.
Damn funny.

I think there was some art-vandal author back in the 80's or 90's who did a similar thing with Dick and Jane.

So does anyone actually name RPG characters after themselves? I'm boring- I just keep the default names (except Link- he's always something else).

I have one who names his character "Common Cold" for the same reason. Or occasionally "AIDS", or "Black Plague", or... you can see where this is going.

It's a tradition started by my brother. He got dragon warrior back in the eighties and he named his character Link for some reason. I think he really wanted Legend of Zelda, but never got it.

Given the option I almost always name the main character Shaper.

I remember back in junior high, one of my friends named all of his level 100 Pokemon "Caterpie." It wrecked havoc on our matches as we'd always see, "Andrew sends out CATERPIE!" and a Mewtwo would pop out.

Still, it was pretty funny because afterwards his last Pokemon really was a level 100 Caterpie. It's such a waste though. :/

In Suikoden, name McDohl "Baiter," "Bater," "Bator," or some other variation. Hilarity ensues when Gremio and the others repeatedly refer to him as Master.

I just remembered! In Dragon Warrior III, you couldn't actually name your character Erdrick. It would mysteriously prohibit you from choosing the name (in the GBC version, the equivalent is Loto.)

Also, even though it was tempting to call him something ridiculous since you typically never have him around for the rest of the game, you had to be careful when naming your merchant whom you send off to help build the town, otherwise you end up stuck with a city called Turdburg or something.

Also also, is it actually possible to have a whole party of characters with four-letter names and not have at least one or two of them sound ridiculous?

I remember on the Amiga I would always put rude words for the names of the characters, and I'd be laughing so much it made it difficult to type. That's how my character in Pub Darts ended up being called 'Sqeuaky Bollo'.

my when-i'm-not-me FPS name: problems

xWBLZxSomeJerk was shot in the head by problems
problems gutted with a knife by JoeMomma!
problems is on a rampage! (that's the only problem, the plural forum doesn't work that well, sigh)

also, in RPGs, while nowadays i tend to play characters (like my orcish mushroom-engineer Rustface or the persuasive charming violent thug with a love of liberty and kittens Max Planck), but i used to name the main character after me and then everyone else after friends. when i was kid, this got really creepy though as i was more or less stalking girls in video game form, building these big imaginative stories about our journeys through the land-of-whatevers and feeling really good every time i kept everybody healed.

i think once i even built a dragon warrior party out of characters from other video games (female fighter named samus, etc). but in most of those RPGs you couldn't really customize abilities or equipment for the characters, it was pretty much 'pick the best' available, which limited that.

That's the best thing about custom names, that you can build attachments to the other characters that you wouldn't normally have.

My friend and I took great pleasure in naming our Wing Commander character "Asshole" and then imagining all the dialogue as somebody being angrily sarcastic:

"You blew up the enemy base! Way to go, Asshole!"
